화승 월주 원덕문의 화맥과 화풍 연구 (A Study on the Buddhist Painting Pulse and Style of Painting in Wondeokmun, Wolju, a Buddhist Monk who paints Buddhist Paintings)

초록

올해는 국가무형문화재 제48호 단청장 종목이 지정된 지 50년이 되는 해이다. 1972년 단청장이 지정되면서 3명의 기능보유자가 인정되었고, 그 중의 한 명이월주 원덕문이다. 그는 1913년 부산에서 출생하였고, 어린 나이에 출가하여 완호낙현의 제자로 단청과 불교미술을 사사받았다. 완호의 스승은 수룡기전(水龍琪 佺)으로 19세기 해인사를 중심으로 경상도 일대에서 활동했던 이름난 화승이었다. 월주의 화승계보는 수룡기전(水龍琪佺)→완호낙현(玩虎洛現)→월주덕문(月 洲德文)→소운(素雲) 김용우(金容宇)에게로 이어지는 계보 현황을 보이고 있다.
월주의 불화를 살펴보면 대략 140여 점 이상을 제작했을 것으로 추정된다. <칠성도>와 <신중도> 그리고 <석가설법도>의 순으로 제작된 불화의 숫자가 많음을 알 수 있다. 지역적으로 경상도지역에서 많은 작품 수를 보이고 있으며, 그 이유는 화맥이 전승되어 활동했던 지역에서 많은 수의 불화 작업이 이루어진 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 전체 작품의 변화 추이를 보았을 때 크게 네 시기로 구분할 수 있으며, 시기별 불화의 화풍 변화를 볼 수 있었다.
불화 화풍의 특징을 보았을 때 화풍의 시원은 수룡에서 시작되었다. 수룡의 작품 특징은 본존불의 설법인과 협시보살의 자세가 정면 응시(凝視) 입상이다. 또한 협시보살의 복장이 천의를 걸친 표현과 관음보살의 자세가 입상으로 백의를 착용한 모습이다. 그리고 협시보살이 지물로 연꽃을 들고 있는 표현과 가섭·아난의 두광 표현 등이다. 수룡의 작품 특징은 완호와 월주에게 전해졌다.
또한 완호의 작품 특징 중의 하나로 사천왕이 위치해야 할 곳에 금강역사가 표현되었다. 본존불의 복식에 보이는 문양으로 연화당초문, 결련금문, 갈모금문을 표현하고 있는 부분 등을 볼 수 있다. 이러한 특징은 월주에게 전해졌다.
월주의 화맥과 화풍을 통해서 화승의 작품 활동이 스승의 화풍적 특징을 기반으로 성장하고 있음과 그러한 성장을 다음 제자에게 전승하는 전형적인 흐름을 알 수 있었다.
월주의 작품 활동은 불화, 단청과 벽화, 불상 조각 등 불교미술 전반에 걸쳐 활동하였기에 차후 단청과 벽화, 그리고 불교조각에 대한 연구도 진행되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the designation of the National Intangible Cultural Property No. 48 Dancheongjang event. When Dancheongjang was designated in 1972, three functional holders were recognized, and Wolju Wondeokmun was one of them. Born in Busan in 1913, he became a monk at a young age and learned Dancheong and Buddhist art as a disciple of Wanho Nakhyeon. The teacher of Wanho Nakhyeon was a famous Hwaseung who worked in Gyeongsang-do, centering on Haeinsa Temple in the 19th century. The genealogy of monks painting in Wolju shows the current status of the genealogy that follows Suryonggijeon → Wanho Nakhyeon → Woljudeokmun → Soun Kim Yongwoo.
Looking at the Buddhist paintings of Wolju, it is estimated that more than 140 pieces were produced. It can be seen that there are many Buddhist paintings produced in the order of <Chilseong Painting>, <Paintings of Buddhist Deities>, and <Sakyamuni Buddha Preaching>. It shows a large number of works locally in Gyeongsang-do, and the reason is that a large number of Buddhist works have been carried out in the area where Works and Genealogy was passed down and active. In addition, when looking at the changes in the entire work, it can be largely divided into four periods, and changes in the painting style of Buddhist Painting can be seen by period.
When looking at the characteristics of Buddhist painting style, the origin of painting style began in Suryong. The characteristic of Suryong's work is that the shape of the hand in the preaching of the main Buddha and the posture of the Bodhisattva are the front gaze. In addition, the costume of the Bodhisattva is expressed in cloth and the posture of Avalokiteśvara is dressed in white as a standing statue. In addition, there are expressions such as the representation of the Buddha holding a lotus flower as a ground, and the expression of the head light of Gaseop and Annan. The characteristics of Suryong's works were handed down to Wanho and Wolju.
In addition, as one of the characteristics of Wanho's works, a Deva king was expressed where the Four Guardian Kings should be located. The patterns shown in the costumes of the main Buddha can be seen, such as Inlaid Lotus and Scroll Design, Condensation pattern, and Galmogum pattern. This characteristic was passed on to Wolju.
Through Wolju's the Buddhist painting pulse and painting style, it was possible to see that Hwaseung's work activities were growing based on the teacher's painting style characteristics, and the typical flow of transmitting such growth to the next disciple.
Since Wolju's work activities were active throughout Buddhist art such as Buddhist paintings, dancheong, murals, and Buddha sculptures, studies on dancheong, murals, and Buddha sculptures should also be conducted in the future.
