영어초록

This article argues that the “Isthmian transit zone” across Panama during the California Gold Rush showcased the dual-sided nature of nineteenth-century U.S. empire-building. For two decades after the discovery of gold in California in 1848, the fastest means the Americans used to migrate between the east and west coasts was through the Isthmus of Panama, crossing the land strip on foot or on trains to board the Pacific Mail Steamship Company’s steamships on the Pacific side. This transportation route ushered U.S. imperialism in the Isthmus in two different ways. One, the white settler-colonists bound for California incorporated the Isthmus of Panama into the nation’s “westward expansion,” both cognitively and practically. The manner in which California-bound white American travelers scrutinized the native population and society in Panama constructed an image of the Isthmus within American culture as accessible yet exotic, virtually colonized by the United States. On the other hand, the construction of the Panama Railroad during the early 1850s and the multinational operation of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company initiated a phase of U.S. capitalist expansion overseas. This fundamentally transformed the environment, economic structure, and demography of the Isthmus. Nonetheless, the burgeoning gold-rush economy in Panama was also predicated on the existence of a multi-racial society; many of its old and new members from outside the United States actively participated in the transportation and travel industry. The sense of entitlement expressed by the traveling sojourners from the U.S. created tensions within this diverse society, once exploding in bloodshed during the so-called Watermelon War of 1856. The aftermath of the Watermelon War affirmed that the United States government and its citizens considered Panama as a vital extension of their own territories. The central geographical location of Panama and the railroad built by an American corporation created an imagined contiguity between Panama and the United States from the mid-nineteenth century on, foreshadowing the neo-colonial relationships to come with the construction of the Panama Canal in the early-twentieth century.
