A study on writing method of drama in 1920s - Focusing on《Widower Brothers》and《Your Excellency, Your Excellency Bad》-

Park, Seung Hee opened up a new play movement in 1920s and was a key member of Towolhoe. He appeared in 180 new plays and wrote adapted, translated and created 200 dramas. However, only four works of them,《Widower Brothers》,《Your Excellency, Your Excellency Bad》,《My Own Flesh and Blood》,《Hometown》have been handed down across the generation. Furthermore, research on Park, Seung Hee is not enough compared with other contemporary writers.
《Widower Brothers》and《Your Excellency, Your Excellency Bad》were satirical comedies recreated based on the classical works such as tales and Korean novels. As for《Widower brothers》, it was an adapted drama of a fox legendary literature and blew the whistle on the reality of Korea under the rule of Japanese imperialism. As for《Your Excellency, Your Excellency Bad》, it was an adapted drama of well-known Korean novel called 《BaeBiJangJeon》and one of folktales from Gangwon province called 《Pyeong-yang Giseng and her Excellency》. It criticized the hypocrisy of the ruling class at that time.
When he was staying focused on modernizing classical works, a new play movement from Japan which denied Korean classical theater had caused disconnection of history of the Korean theater. Nevertheless, Park wrote drama based on legendary literatures and using motives of Korean novels and tried to recover Korean identification, which was different from other playwriting.
Park Seung Hee, who introduced new play and wrote drama succeeded to Korean traditional satirical comedies and humors during the Japanese occupation, should be evaluated. His effort to modernize classical works surely has a great significance in that modernization of the classical works made a meaningful opportunity to connect the old plays and the modern ones.
