조선 말기 望同窯의 기원과 전개 (A Study on the Origin and spreads of Mangdong(望同) Kiln in the Late Joseon Dynasty(1800-1910))

초록

본 연구는 조선 말기 分院貢所의 공인이었던 池圭植이 1890년부터 1910년까지 20여 년간 쓴 『荷齋日記』 1903년 4월 10일에‘破窯處 使聞慶金備安 築 望同窯 二間’이라는 기록에 착안하여 1800년 이후부터 1910년까지를 중심으로 조선 말기 望同窯의 기원과 전개를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구 방법으로 망동요의 기원과 특성을 문헌기록과 고고학적 정의로 규정해보았다. 분실요와 연실요를 구분하는 기준을 제시하여 조선 18세기 이후 연실요의 출현과 연실요로서 망동요의 특성을 보다 명확히 하였다. 문경 관음리 망동요와 동일 시기 조선 다른 지역의 망동요는 물론, 중국과 일본 가마와의 비교를 통해 문경 망동요의 독특한 지리적ㆍ공학적 특성을 살펴보았다. 본 연구를 통해 망동요는 문경 지역의 독특한 가마로, 유사한 형식이 전라남도 일대와 충청도에도 남아 있지만, 가마 번조실 바닥의 평면형태가 다르고 문헌자료와 출토유물을 근거로 두 지역의 望同窯가 선후 관계에 있거나 다른 축조 방식을 취하고 있음을 결론지었다. 또한 조선의 망동요와 중국과 일본의 鷄籠窯를 비교하여, 조선의 망동요가 자생한 것으로 독특한 재료와 축조 방식의 가마임을 밝혀내었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to research Mangdong Kiln of Munkyung Kwanyin-ri, Gyungsang Province in Korea, which had been in use for approximately 160 years from 1843 to 1999. A Mangdong Kiln is a traditional Korean kiln built with Mangdangyi(a name of clay material used for building a porcelain kiln of Korea), a conical clay. A Mangdong kiln was recorded in the year of 1903 to be built by the potter, Kim bi-an(Wunhee, 金備安) in the Diary(荷齋日記) of Ji Gyu-sik(池圭植) who, as a government official tribute manager, directed Bunwon tribute kiln(分院貢所) of Joseon dynasty, had written it for 20 years from 1890 to 1910. This research literature is the very first find related to Mangdong Kiln. For this research, I examined the documents, in the period of 1800 to 1910, about producing royal porcelains and the tribute system of porcelain to inquire into the nature and change of Bunwon, a Royal kiln of Joseon dynasty. And to look into the origin of Mangdong Kiln, I used 3D scanning to measure the accurate sizes of the kiln of Munkyung Kwanyin-ri and analysed the characteristics of a divided kiln and a continuous kiln during Joseon dynasty(1392-1910) and compared it with Chinese and Japanese continuous kiln, JIlong(鷄籠) kiln. Investigating other Mangdong kilns, so far, excavated in Korea and comparing each other including Munkyung Kwanyin-ri kiln in whole length, the form of chambers, a degree of slope, etc, I attempted to find the origin and characterize the local style of Mangdong kiln in Korea. Finally I concluded that Mangdong Kiln of Munkyung Kwanyin-ri was a unique and prime local kiln which was firstly recorded to be built in 1843, comparing with other Mangdong kilns of Jeolla Province and Chungcheong Province. Its type of firing chambers and the technique of building kiln was different from others. And I supposed on the resonable research basis that a Mangdong Kiln of Korea was a independently developed continuous kiln built with special material, Mangdangyi which was, so far, never found to be used neither in China nor Japan. And I found not only individual styles of Korean local potters such as Kim bi-an and Kim gyo-su who worked in Mangdong Kiln of Munkyung Kwanyin-ri but traditional production techniques and periodic local styles of porcelains in the late Joseon dynasty.
