조선 말~20세기 초 근기지역 종중재산 소유 양상에 관한 사례연구- 경기도 광주 중대동 광주안씨 종중토지 관련 고문서 자료의 재해석 - (A Case Study on the Ownership Patterns of the Property of a Lineage Group in Gyeonggi Region from Late Joseon to the Early 20th Century of Korea: Reinterpretation of Old Land Documents of the Gwangju )

초록

이 글은 조선 말기 경기도 지역 동성촌락에서 종가가 차지하는 사회적 위상과 종중조직의 의의를 고찰하는 사례연구이다. 이를 위해 한국학중앙연구원 장서각에 소장된 광주안씨 순암 안정복 종중의 고문서 자료 가운데, 20세기 초에 작성된 자료를 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 이 종중은 조선시대 초기부터 현재까지 경기도 광주에 세거하면서, 조선후기에는 종중조직인 종계를 결성하고 족보의 간행에 적극 참여하는 등 여러 활동을 전개하였다. 그러므로 조선시대 종중조직의 활동 양상과 특징을 고찰하는 데 적절한 사례라 하겠다.
자료를 분석한 결과, 예전에 발표된 연구에서는 20세기에 작성된 자료를 19세기의 것으로 착각하였음을 밝혔다. 그리고 종중조직에서 기록한 자료만으로 종중재산의 규모와 조직의 동향을 추론했다는 사실도 확인하였다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해, 이 글에서는 19세기 말부터 20세기 초의 광주안씨 종중 소유 토지의 전체 규모를 파악할 수 있는 자료인 『토지조사부』를 분석하여 종중 소장 고문서 자료와 비교하였다. 이를 통해 종중토지의 면적을 이전보다 정확히 파악하고, 순암 안정복이 살았던 19세기 초에 조직한 종계의 의미를 보다 정확하게 이해할 수 있었다.
광주안씨 종중은 순암 안정복 이전부터 대규모의 종중토지를 소유하였음에도 불구하고, 토지를 추가로 매입하고 종계를 결성하였다. 그 목적은 전국에 산재한 광주안씨 후손들의 족적 결합을 강화하기 위해서였다. 또한 인근에 거주하는 다른 가문과 달리, 광주안씨 순암 종중은 종중재산이 매우 많았던 반면에 종가가 소유한 재산이 거의 없었다. 이는 종가의 권위를 중시하는 영남지역의 종중과는 다른 특징이기도 하다. 따라서 오늘날 광주안씨 종중에서 안정복 종가가 차지하는 위상은 순암 안정복의 학문적 명예와 후대의 역사적 평가에 따라 형성된 것으로 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This article is a case study examining the social status of the head family and the significance of the lineage group organization at a village of the same surname in Gyeonggi Province at the end of the Joseon period. For this purpose, materials from the early 20th century were selected and analyzed among the old documents of Sunam Ahn Jeong‐bok’s lineage group (Gwangju Ahn family), which are now stored at Jangseogak of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS). This lineage group has been living in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province from the early Joseon to the present, and in the late Joseon period, they formed a gye of lineage group (宗契), and conducted various activities such as publishing their genealogy. Therefore, it can be a representative case to show the activity patterns and characteristics of the lineage group organization in the Joseon era. Considering that the existing research on lineage groups has mainly focused on Yeongnam region, exploring a case of Gyeonggi region will contribute to broadening the horizons of this field of study.
As a result of data analysis, this study found that data from the 20th century was mistaken for that of the 19th century in previous studies. It also confirmed that the size of some lineage groups’ property and their pattern of organizing their groups were inferred only from data produced by the lineage groups. To solve these problems, this article analyzed the Land Survey Ledger, which provides information on the total size of land owned by the Gwangju Ahn lineage group from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, and then compared it with the old documents owned by the lineage group. Through this, the land area of ​​the lineage group can be identified more accurately than before, and it was possible to more accurately understand the meaning of the organization (gye) of the lineage group formed in the early 19th century when Sunam Ahn Jeong‐bok lived.
The Gwangju Ahn family had owned massive land before forming the organization of lineage group during the lifetime of Sunam Ahn Jeong‐bok. Nevertheless, the Ahn Jeong‐bok lineage group continued to purchase land, adding to the property of their lineage group and formed the lineage organization. Their purchase of additional land was not because of a lack of property but rather it was to strengthen bond between the descendants of the Gwangju Ahn family scattered across the country. Unlike other lineage groups living nearby, the Sunam lineage group of Gwangju Ahn family had a great portion of lineage group property, whereas the head family owned very little. This is a feature different from the lineage group of Yeongnam region, which emphasizes the authority of the head family. Therefore, this study shows that when interpreting the relationship between head families and the non‐head families in the late Joseon period, it is inappropriate to apply the typical cases of the Yeongnam region, which prioritizes the head family, to other regions. Therefore, it can be understood that the status of the Ahn Jeong‐bok head family in the Gwangju Ahn lineage group today is not the result of the hierarchical consciousness that grants authority to the head family, as in the case of the Yeongnam region, but rather it was given due to the academic achievement of Sunam Ahn Jeong‐bok and historical evaluation of him by later generations.
