파리외방전교회의 『한불자전』(1880)과 《불한사전》(1869) 비교 연구 - 19세기 한국어 연구와 번역용례 말뭉치 구축을 위한 기반 - (A comparative analysis of Dictionnaire Français - Coréen and Dictionnaire Coréen - Français)

초록

한국 최초의 한불사전인 한불 뎐(Dictionnaire Coréen-Français)(1880)과 최초의 불한사전인 Dictionnaire Français-Coréen(불한사전, 1869)은 프랑스 선교사들의 한국어 학습과 번역을 목적으로 편찬되었지만, 체계적인 사전의 틀과 형식을 갖춘 한국어 사전이라고 할 수 있다. 특히 한불자전은 2만 7천여 개의 표제어를 수록하고 의미정보뿐만 아니라 발음 전사, 한자어, 형태 정보가 체계적으로 제시되었으며 인쇄본의 형태로 현존하기 때문에 지속해서 활용되며 관련 연구도 잇따르고 있다. 이와는 달리 페롱의 불한사전은 강이연(2004)의 논문을 통해 처음으로 판본 연구와 사전의 특징이 소개되었다. 불한사전의 발견은 한불자전과 더불어 초기 프랑스 선교사에 의한 한국어 연구로서 큰 의미가 있는 것이었으나 필사본 자료를 다루기란 쉽지 않기 때문에 활용되기 어렵고 후속 연구 또 한 이어지지 않고 있다.
한불자전과 불한사전은 모두 프랑스인의 한국어 학습에 그 목적을 둔 사전이지만 불한사전은 프랑스어 표제어를 대상으로 대응되는 한국어 어휘의 의미와 용법을 설명하는 데 중점을 두었으며, 한불자전은 한국어 표제어와 용례가 다양하고 풍부하다는 점에서 한국어 연구자료로 가공하여 활용될 필요가 있다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 프랑스어를 출발점으로 삼은 불한사전과 한국어를 출발점으로 삼은 한불자전의 다의어 구분과 용례 비교를 통해 한-불 번역용례 말뭉치로서의 가능성을 모색하고, 나아가 이 두 사전이 19세기 한국어 연구를 위한 귀중한 언어자원으로서 통합적인 한국어 역사말뭉치로 재구성되고 활용될 필요가 있음을 제안한다.

영어초록

Stanislas Féron and Félix-Clair Ridel, two French missionaries who survived the Byeong-in Persecution (1866), wrote respectively the first Korean bilingual dictionary, Dictionnaire Français- Coréen (1868-1869? hereafter, DFC) and Dictionnaire Coréen-Français (1880, hereafter, DCF). Ridel’s DCF has been relatively well preserved in both its initial printed version (Yokohama, Levy) and the manuscripts; however, the original manuscript of Féron’s DFC was lost, and only four later manuscripts remain in France and Korea.
These early bilingual dictionaries were written for the practical Korean-language education of missionaries who clandestinely pursued their religious expansion in Korea equipped with only Latin-Chinese reference works. The DCF became the lexicographical model for succeeding English-language bilingual dictionaries by J. S. Gale and H. G. Underwood, and has often been employed by linguists as the key 19th century Korean-language resource. In fact, its 27,000 entry words (a total comparable to those of modern Korean bilingual dictionaries) along with the Sino-Korean forms were collected as part of the Korean National Corpus under the 21st Century Sejong Project (1998-2007). Whereas the DCF has been considered an important historical language resource, the DFC was not even known to Korean linguists until the publication of its photographic edition based on the manuscript of Richard (1869) in 2004. The DFC, containing 10,328 French entry words and rich examples of French-Korean translation sentence pairs, should also be exploited as a historic corpus for 19th century Korean as well as an example dictionary of that century’s French-Korean translation. Both of these dictionaries are also key resources for determining how the early French missionaries learned the Korean language and what their primary resources were as they compiled their lexicons.
However, besides the obvious superficial difference in their entry-word/definition directionalities, the DCF and DFC also differ significantly in their macro and micro structures. The DFC focuses on presenting Korean lexical forms, locutions, and examples along with their usages, while the DCF explains, in French, the usages and contexts of the Korean entry words. In this sense, the two dictionaries are complementary, and indeed, both are necessary to the study of the Korean language of the 19th century. Therefore, in this study we had two objectives: 1) to compare the macro and micro structures of DFC and DCF, based on the first versions of their metadata, and 2) to explore the possibility of constructing an intelligent and augmentable knowledge base of the history of the Korean language along with a parallel Korean/French translation corpus.
