19세기말 고종대 경복궁 중건 자료에 대한 일고찰－宮內廳 서릉부 소장 『景福宮營建日記』를 중심으로－ (A study of Kyong-bokkung rebuilding materials of King Gojong at the end of the 19th century)

초록

지금의 경복궁은 고종 즉위 초기에 중건한 궁궐이다. 조선왕조 개국기 웅비하던 왕조의 모습을 상징하던 궁궐의 자취는 임진왜란기에 소실되어 알 수 없다. 오늘날 경복궁은 서세동점기인 고종대에 대원군이 주도하여 중건한 것이다. 따라서 조선왕조 전체시기를 대표하는 기념비적 모습을 찾기는 어렵다. 그럼에도 왕조의 번창을 위해 국가의 인적, 물적 토대를 아낌없이 소용한 모습에서 19세기말 왕실 및 궁궐 문화의 면모를 보여주기 때문에 학술적이나 문화적으로 주목되는 궁궐이다. 이런 역사적 배경을 지닌 경복궁의 중건에 대한 연구는 역사학보다 건축사 분야에서 활발한 연구 성과를 보이고 있다. 역사학에서는 대원군의 통치술과 연관시켜 정국을 해석하는 과정에서 경복궁 중건을 언급하였다. 건축사에서는 건물의 조성부분에서 인력 동원에 이르기까지 건축과 관련된 분야를 집중적으로 연구하였다. 그런데 19세기말 역사적 가치를 품고 있는 조선왕조의 대표적인 정궁에 대한 연구 자료는 생각보다 소략했다. 현재까지도 연대기와 편린으로 남아 있는 영건 관련 자료만을 이용하여 연구가 이루어졌다. 따라서 기존 경복궁 중건 연구들은 구체적으로 사안을 심층적으로 다루거나 해석하는 부분에 다소 미약할 수밖에 없었다. 무엇보다 중건 시기 전체를 정리한 영건 자료가 없었기 때문이다. 기존 연구의 한계를 돌파할 수 있는 것이 일본의 궁내청 소장 『경복궁영건일기』 9권이다. 이 자료는 서울대에 소장 중인 『경복궁영건일기』에서 누락된 권2에서 권9를 포함하고 있다. 기존 연구에서 다루지 못한 시기들의 영건 기록이 망라되었다. 물론 궁내청 소장본이 서울대 소장본처럼 하나의 자료로 정리된 것이 아니라 『이태왕실록자료』에 채록된 점은 자료로서 지니는 한계이다. 그럼에도 현재 궁내청 소장본을 능가하는 『경복궁영건일기』의 완본이 없는 상황에서 이 자료의 가치와 성격을 주목할 필요가 있다. 본고에서는 궁내청 소장 『경복궁영건일기』의 전체를 분석하지 못한 한계를 지니고 있으나, 그 자료의 가치와 성격을 규명하는 것에 목적으로 두어 국내 소장본과의 비교를 우선적으로 수행하였다.

영어초록

The Palace of Kyongbokkung is a rebuilt in the early reign of King Gojong. The Palace which revealed the figure of the dynasty during the opening of the Joseon Dynasty can not be known by the disappearance after the war of Imjin. Today Kyongbokkung is the one rebuilt led by King Gojong. Therefore, it is difficult to find a monumental figure representing the whole period of the Joseon dynasty. Still using the resources of the country for the prosperity of the dynasty, it shows the Royal family and the Palace culture at the end of the 19th century, so it is an academically and culturally attractive Palace.
Research on the reconstruction of Kyongbokkung with such historical background shows active research results from the history in the field of architectural history. In historical studies, we refer to the reconstruction of Kyongbokkung in the process of interpreting the politics in connection with the reign of the crown. In the history of architecture, we concentratedly studied areas related to architecture, ranging from building components to human resources mobilization. However, the research material of the representative shrine of the Joseon dynasty which has historical value at the end of the 19th century came more than I thought. Research was carried out using only records related to the present and only the cemetery related data remaining in the scales. Therefore, existing research on the reconstruction of Kyongbokkung had to be somewhat weak to the part specifically dealing with or interpreting the case. It is because there was no campany material that summarizes the whole period of reconstruction.
It is the data of the collection of the Japan Imperial Household Agency that it can break through the limit of such research. This material contains the missing parts of the materials held in Seoul National University. Records of times that could not be explained by existing research were covered. In situations where there is no material prioritizing the books of the Imperial Household Agency, it is necessary to pay attention to the value and character of this material. In this paper, we aimed to preferentially investigate the value and character of the Collection of the Imperial Household Agency, and compared it with domestic books.
