말대답 노래에 나타난 대결의 양상과 의미- 한국 서사민요와 영미 발라드의 비교를 통해 (Meaning and Competition Aspects in Back Talk Songs : Through Comparison of Korean Narrative Songs and Anglo-American Ballads)

초록

이 글에서는 한국 서사민요와 영미 발라드 중 말대답이 서사 전개의 주요 요소로 이루어져 있는 노래를 대상으로 대결의 양상과 의미를 살펴보았다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 한국 서사민요와 영미 발라드 모두 말대답을 통해 현실적 지위를 역전시킨다. 영미 발라드에서는 사회적 지위의 역전이, 한국 서사민요에서는 가족적 위계의 역전이 나타난다. 특히 영미 발라드 <The False Knight upon the Road(길 위의 가짜 기사)>, <King John and the Bishop(존 왕과 주교)>에서 초현실적, 정치적, 종교적 권력자보다는 현실적이고 미천한 자의 승리를, 한국 서사민요 <며느리 말대꾸 노래>, <꿩타령>에서 시집식구보다 며느리, 남편보다 아내의 승리를 그려낸 것에서 두 지역의 향유층 모두 기존의 사회적, 가족적 권위에 대한 비판의식을 지니고 있음을 파악할 수 있다.
둘째, 한국 서사민요와 영미 발라드 모두 말대답을 통해 고정적 성 관념을 파괴한다. 한국 서사민요에서는 처녀와 외간 남자 사이에서, 영미 발라드에서는 아내와 남편 사이에서 말대답이 이루어지며, 말대답의 주체가 남자가 아닌 처녀, 남편이 아닌 아내로 나타난다. 특히 한국 서사민요 <찢어진 쾌자노래>와 영미 발라드 <Our Goodman(우리의 선한 남자)>에서는 부적절한 관계에 있으면서도 당당한 처녀와 아내의 재치 있는 말대답을 통해 고정적 성 관념을 파괴함으로써 성적 일탈의 재미와 풍자를 함께 누렸다.
이들 노래는 기존 사회의 통념과 권위를 뒤집는 전복과 저항의 메시지로서, 두 사회의 민중들은 사회 속에서 유․무형으로 가해지는 억압을 말대답으로 된 노래로 부름으로써 그로부터의 일탈과 자유를 꿈꾸었다.

영어초록

This paper investigated the meaning and the competition aspects in the back talk through the comparison of the Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads. I searched them through dividing those songs into two categories – the reversion to the realistic status, The destruction of the static sex perception. The Results are as follows;1) The reversion to the realistic statusThe Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads express the reversion to the realistic status by the back talks. There are Child #3 <The False Knight upon the Road>, Child #45 <King John and the Bishop> of the Anglo-American ballads, <Daughter-in-law’s balk talk song>, <Pheasant Song> of the Korean narrative songs in this category. While the conflict between the super natural being and the actual being or the political power and the religious power are performed in the Anglo- American ballads, the conflict between the husband’s family and a daughter-in-law or the husband and wife are described in the Korean narrative songs. However, the fact that winners are the weak people such as the shepherd, the daughter-in-law, and the wife show the consciousness of resistance against the social authorities in the east and the west world commonly.
2) The destruction of the static sex perceptionThe Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads express the reversion to the realistic status by the back talks. There are Child #274 <Our Goodman> of the Anglo-American ballads, <Cloths torn off> of the Korean narrative songs in this category. While the competition between the wife and the husband is performed in the Anglo- American ballads, the competition between a maiden and a man is described in the Korean narrative songs. However, the fact that winners are women show the consciousness of resistance against the static sex perception in the east and the west world commonlyThe study of Korean narrative songs, moreover, the comparison between Korean narrative songs and Anglo-American ballads have been not performed sufficiently. I wish that this study would be the step-stone of the expansion of the comparative study of the Korean narrative songs and the Anglo-American ballads.
