강만길이 말한 역사학자의 역할 －‘역사학의 현재성과 대중성’ 인식을 중심으로－ (Kang Man-gil on the Role of the Historian : Focusing on His notion of “the History of the Present and for Common People”)

초록

평생에 걸쳐 자신을 역사학자라고 규정한 강만길은 역사학자의 역할에 대한 많은 고민을 남겼다. 식민사학 극복을 중요 연구 과제로 설정했던 1960년대에 그는 역사 연 구에서 역사성에 대한 이해가 가장 중요하다는 점을 제기했다. 이러한 생각은 1970년 대 유신독재 시기 ‘역사학의 현재성과 대중성’ 인식으로 처음 정리되었다. 현재성은 ‘올바른’ 역사성의 인식과 현실 모순의 극복 노력을 지칭하는 개념으로 분단과 분단극 복이 핵심이 되었고, 현재성을 획득하기 위해 역사학자와 지식대중의 만남이 이루어져 야 한다고 주장했다. 1980년대 이후에는 현재성의 인식 범위가 냉전체제 해체 이후 세 계사에 이르기까지 확대되었고 ‘역사는 이상의 현실화 과정’이라는 보편적 언어로 현재성 개념이 정립되었다. 대중성 실현을 위한 방식도 개설서를 포함하여 다양한 지면을 통한 집필 활동과 문학 영역과의 교류 등으로 넓어졌다. 한편 동시대부터 강만길의 역 사 연구에 대해 당위론･현재주의라는 비판이 제기되었다. 그러나 강만길은 사실에 대 한 연구를 끊임없이 전개하며 현재성을 비판적으로 재구축하려 시도했고 역사에 대한 거시적 분석으로 기존의 서사 틀을 넘고자 했다. 학문을 수호하는 입장에서 연구에 임 했고, 사학사 비판의 연장선상에서 역사 연구를 전개했다. 이 글에서는 1970년대까지 와 비교했을 때 1980년대 이후 강만길의 ‘역사학의 현재성과 대중성’ 인식이 진화한다 는 점을 밝혔고, 순수실증 중심으로 고착된 역사학자의 역할론에 맞선 강만길의 역정 을 담았다. 강만길이 역사학의 사회적 역할과 실천 문제를 본격적으로 제기한 역사학 자였음을 20세기 후반 사학사에서 중요하게 검토해야 한다.

영어초록

A lifelong historian from South Korea, Kang Man-gil asked many questions about the role of the historian. In the 1960s, when he set the overcoming of colonialist history as the primary goal, Kang put forward that understanding the concept of historicity is the most important in historical studies. During the 1970s, when South Korea was under military dictatorship, he developed this idea into the notion of "the history of the present and for common people (yŏksahagŭi hyŏnjaesŏnggwa taejungsŏng)." His concept of presentness denotes the 'decent' perception of historicity and the effort to overcome the real contradiction, essentially meaning Korea's division and the overcoming of the division. He also argued that to grasp the idea of the historical present, a meeting between historians and intellectual masses must take place. After the 1980s, his perception of the historical present expanded to include post-cold-war-era world history, and he further elaborated his concept of presentness in the universal language of "history is the realization of ideals." At the same time, his method of reaching common people diversified by embracing a variety of writings, including introductory books, and exchanging with the literary field.
Some contemporaries criticized Kang Man-gil's historical studies for their moralism and presentism. However, Kang tried to critically reconceptualize presentness by ceaselessly researching the truth. He also tried to go beyond the existing narrative structure by adopting a broader historical perspective. He took research as a way of protecting scholarship and historical research as a way of criticizing the history of historiography. Compared to the 1970s, as this article illuminates, in the 1980s and beyond, Kang's perception of "the history of the present and for common people" had evolved and contained the path of his opposition against the strict discourse of positivist historians. It is important to note that in the history of late-twentieth-century historiography, Kang Man-gil was the historian who seriously drew attention to historical writing's social role and practical issues.
