1960년대 김종삼 메타시와 ‘참여’의 문제 — 말라르메와 사르트르의 영향을 중심으로 (Kim Jong Sam’s Meta-poetry in 1960s and Engagement of Poetry)

초록

본고는 1960년대 김종삼 시의 특성을 그 이전 시기와 변별하고, 말라르메와 사르트르의 영향 사이에서 메타시 형식으로써 모색한 시적 참여의 문제를 설명하고자 한다. 한편으로 「십이음계의 층층대」의 개작 과정은 사르트르에 관한 김종삼의 관심을 보여주었다. 다른 한편으로 김종삼은 메타시 「앙포르멜」에서 시에 관한 자신의 태도를 말라르메와 사르트르의 병치로써 암시하였다. 이 작품이 말라르메와 사르트르를 동시에 호명한 것은 세계문학사의 중층적 관계망 속에서 시적 참여 문제를 제기한 것으로 해석될 수 있다.
1960년 4월 민주화 혁명과 이듬해 박정희 군사정변 무렵, 김종삼이 발표한 작품들은 당대 역사적 맥락과 알레고리적 관계를 맺고 있다. 이 작품들에서 올페, 즉 오르페우스 모티프는 죽은 아이 등의 영혼 기호와 악기 등의 음악 기호가 결합된 것으로서, 역사의 폭력에 의하여 희생된 인간의 영혼과 그에 관한 기억을 불러오는 예술적 실천을 의미한다. 그리고 오르페우스 모티프가 활용된 김종삼의 시편은 자신의 시적 태도를 드러내는 메타시에 속한다고 할 수 있다. 또한 오르페우스가 가져오는 ‘휴식’은 인공적인 폭력의 역사가 정지하고 자연적인 상태의 인간에게 내재해 있는 근원적 사랑이 회복됨을 뜻한다. 이러한 역사적 상황에 대응하여 김종삼은 시의 참여를 고민하였다.
김종삼의 시 「검은 올페」는 사르트르가 프랑스 식민 지배를 받던 알제리 흑인 시인들의 작품에 관하여 쓴 비평 「검은 오르페」와 영향 관계를 갖는다. 사르트르는 『문학이란 무엇인가』에서 시의 참여 불가능성을 주장했으나, 그의 비평 「검은 오르페」에서 자신의 입장을 바꿔 흑인시를 중심으로 시의 참여 가능성을 옹호하였다. 김종삼의 시 「검은 올페」는 거울 속 영혼 세계에 대한 오르페우스의 관점을 통하여 아이와 같이 순수한 인간의 죽음을 숨바꼭질 놀이로 형상화했다. 김종삼의 「검은 올페」와 사르트르 비평에서 언급된 흑인시는 모두 아이라는 시적 소재로써 순수한 영혼 회복을 표현하며, 식민 지배 또는 냉전 체제로 인한 서구와 제3세계 사이의 위계를 넘어 진정한 보편성을 추구하였다. 하지만 사르트르가 강조한 흑인시의 자연적 육체성 및 말라르메적 초현실주의와 달리, 김종삼 시는 인간의 영혼에 내재한 사랑과 영원성의 기준을 통해 현실적 삶의 가치를 탐문케 한다.
김종삼 시에서 거울과 음악의 모티프는 말라르메의 메타시에서와 같이 시인 자신의 시론을 드러내는 알레고리다. 말라르메 시론의 초점은 현실적 의미를 탈각하여 사물의 이데아를 포착하는 데 있다. 사르트르의 비평 「말라르메의 참여」는 이러한 말라르메의 순수시론과 ‘무(無)’ 개념에 근거하여 산문과 다른 시 고유의 참여 가능성에 주목하였다. 반면에 김종삼 시에서 시의 비유가 되는 모티프는 인류 역사 전체의 메커니즘을 인간의 폭력적 희생으로 형상화하며, 그 속에서 상실된 인간을 애도하는 시적 참여의 알레고리다. 말라르메와 사르트르가 시와 산문을 철저히 구별했던 것과 달리, 김종삼은 시의 참여에 관한 나름의 모색을 통해 시와 산문의 경계를 넘어서는 형식으로 나아갈 수 있었다.

영어초록

This research interprets the poetic engagement of Kim Jong Sam’s meta-poetry in 1960s, by focusing on the influences of Stephan Mallarmé and Jean-Paul Sartre. From Kim Jong Sam’s poem “The Stairs of Twelvenotes Scale”, his concentration on the literary works of Sartre can be distinguished, and his poem “The Informal” can be classified as a meta-poetry since the poem allegorizes his own attitude about writing poetry by juxtaposing Sartre with Mallarmé. This juxtaposition can be interpreted as Kim Jong Sam’s inquiring of poetic engagement since Sartre summoned Mallarmé’s poetic works with respect to engagement of poetry.
Kim Jong Sam’s thinking of poetic engagement in his meta-poetry started during the April democratic revolution and Park Jeong Hee’s military coup in the 1960s by allegorizing the Orpheus motif. This motif combines the signs of innocent soul with the signs of music, indicating that the artistic practice is to remember and recall the human souls who had lost their lives from the violent history. In addition, the Orpheustic symbol of ‘holiday’ implies the standstill of violence in history and the restoration of human beings’ inherent of love. Therefore, Kim Jong Sam agonized about the possibility of the poetic engagement, confronting the Korean historical situations.
There is a relationship of influence between Kim Jong Sam’s poem, “The Black Orpheus”, and the Sartre’s criticism, “Orphée noir (Black Orpheus)”. In the criticism, Sartre have changed his insistence that poetry is an impossible genre for engagement and advocated the possibility of engagement in Algerian “black poetry”, which expressed the oppression of French colonialism. “The Black Orpheus” written by Kim Jong Sam compared the death of innocent human to hide-and-seek from the perspective of Orpheus in mirror which reflects the sprit world. From the Sartre’s criticism and Kim Jong Sam’s poem, the common theme is the restoration of innocent soul and additionally both pursued the authentic universality, apart from the order of rank between Western and the Third World. However, Kim Jong Sam’s poem interrogated value of life in accordance with inherent love and eternity of human soul unlike Sartre emphasized “black poetry” focusing on erotic corporeality and Mallarmé’s surrealistic style.
The motifs of mirror and music in Kim Jong Sam’s poetry relates to Mallarmé’s meta-poetry. In their poetry, these two motifs are shared allegories that suggest their own attitude about creating poetry. Mallarmé’s poetry aspired to grasp an absolute and pure idea, by extricating itself from realistic meaning. Based on Mallarmé’s theory of pure poetry and his concept of “nothingness”, Sartre wrote “Engagement of Mallarmé”, a critical essay that scrutinized proper possibility of engagement not to prose but to poetry. On the contrary, the motifs in Kim Jong Sam were allegories of poetic engagement that delineates mechanism of whole human history as violent destruction of lives and mourns the lost humanity in the historical mechanism. Consequently, Kim Jong Sam could discover his distinctive method of poetic engagement by mingling features of poetry and prose, unlike Mallarmé and Sartre have completely distinguished the two categories.
