서(西)아무르 지역 말갈(靺鞨)토기의 특성과 그 전개 –최근 발굴 유적을 중심으로– (Nature and Spread of Mohe Pottery in the western Amur Region Based on Outcome from Recently Excavated Sites)

초록

이 글은 서(西)아무르 지역에서 최근 발굴한 유적을 토기를 중심으로 분석하고, 주변 유적과 비교·검토하여, 초기중세시대 서아무르지역의 말갈문화의 전개 양상을 살펴본 것이다.
발굴 유적은 제야–부레야 저지대에 분포하는 3개의 서로 다른 유적, 즉 트로이츠코예 고분군과 오시노보예오제로 주거유적, 그리고 돌고예오제로 주거유적이다. 발굴 결과 앞의 두 유적은 말갈문화 트로이츠코예 그룹으로, 뒤의 유적은 미하일로프카 문화로 확인되었다.
발굴된 토기에 대하여 형태분석, 암석학적 분석, 열중량 분석, X선 회절 분석 등을 실시하여, 토기의 태토성분, 제작방법, 표면정면, 소성, 형태분석, 문양구성 등을 검토하였다.
그 결과 트로이츠코예 그룹의 토기는 기본적으로 송화강 유역의 속말말갈의 전통을 따르지만, 미하일로프카문화의 요소도 추가한 것으로 확인되었다. 이런 요소는 구순부의 B자형 요철면, 구순부 점토앙금, 격자타날문 등을 들 수 있다. 토기의 기종은 심발형, 발형, 호형, 화병형, 완 등으로 다양하나, 외반구연 심발형이 대부분을 차지한다. 태토에는 유기물이 첨가되기도 하며, 소성 온도는 650℃이상이다. 오시노보예 오제로 유적에서는 물레로 제작한 토기들이 사용되기 시작하였는데, 물레는 토기 상반부의 모양을 성형하거나 표면을 고르게 펴는데 사용하였다. 물레 토기는 회색 또는 암회색으로 호와 같은 저장용 토기를 제작하였다.
한편, 나이펠트 그룹은 아무르 유역 폴체문화에서 발전한 것으로, 광구장경호와 호형 토기가 특징적이나, 점차 트로이츠코예 그룹과 같이 외반구연 심발형과 화병형 토기가 주류를 이룬다. 하지만 나이펠트 그룹의 토기는 구연부의 돌대와 동체부의 문양에서 큰 차이를 보인다. 구연부 돌대는 따로 만들어 붙였으며, 대부분 각목을 하였다. 동체부의 문양은 침선 모티브와 다치구 압인문이 기본을 이루어 돌대문과 격자타날문인 트로이츠코예 그룹과 다르다.
이러한 토기상의 차이와 방사성탄소연대 등을 통한 편년자료, 그리고 연해주, 중국 동북지방 등 주변지역과의 비교를 통해 보면, 나이펠트 그룹이 7세기 말에 제야–부레야 저지대에 먼저 출현하며, 트로이츠코예 그룹은 조금 늦은 8세기에 나이펠트 그룹과는 달리 서쪽인 제야강과 아무르강 상류쪽에 정착하였음을 알 수 있다.
이 두 그룹은 서아무르 지역 내 서로 다른 지역에서 독자적으로 발전하였다.
이와 같이 발굴된 3개 유적의 고고자료를 통해 서기 Ⅰ천년기 후반 서아무르의 흑수말갈(나이펠트), 속말말갈(트로이츠코예)과 재지문화인 북실위(미하일로프카) 간의 관계를 이해하는데 도움이 되었고, 트로이츠코예 그룹의 장법(葬法), 생업, 토기 제작 등에 대한 새로운 정보를 얻을 수 있었다. 이러한 자료는 향후 연해주와 중국의 말갈은 물론 발해를 연구하는데 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영어초록

This paper examines the nature and spread of Mohe culture in the western Amur region during the early medieval times based on analysis of pottery uncovered from recently investigated sites and comparative study with neighboring sites.
Three sites in the lowland of Zeya-Bureya, Troitskoe tomb complex, Osinovoe Ozero settlement site, and Dolgoe Ozero settlement sites are examined and analyzed. While Troitskoe and Osinovoe sites belong to Troitskoe group of Mohe culture, Dolgoe Ozero site is affiliated with Mikhailovka culture.
Diverse kinds of scientific analyses, including formal analysis, petrographic analysis, thermal analysis,and X-ray phase analysis provided information on chemical composition of clay, manufacturing method, surface treatment, firing condition, and composition of patterns. According to the analyses, while pottery of Troitskoe group basically followed the tradition of Sumo Mohe in the Sungari River valley, some elements of Mikhailovka culture were also added such as B-shaped bump on the lip part, clay sediment on the lip part, and use of paddle with lattice pattern. Diverse kinds of pottery, including a deep bowl, a bowl, a jar, a vase, and a small bowl are uncovered, but a deep bowl with flaring rim is overwhelming in number. Organic materials were sometimes added to the clay, and firing temperature was over 650℃. Pottery manufactured with a potter’s wheel was reported at Osinovoe Ozero site. The potter’s wheel was used in forming the shape of pottery or trimming the surface of pottery and in particular, it was used in manufacturing a gray or dark gray jar for storage container.
While a long-necked jar with wide mouth and a jar represent pottery of Naifel'd group derived from Poltse culture in the Amur River valley, they were gradually replaced by a deep bowl with flaring rim and a vase as the case of Troitskoe group. However, pottery of Naifel'd group is quite different from that of Troitskoe group in a raised band on the rim and decoration on the body. The raised band on the rim separately manufactured and attached has notch pattern in most case, and body decoration consisted of deep line design and impressed design using decoration tool with many teeth. On the other hand, pottery of Troitskoe group is represented by raised band design and beaten design of lattice pattern.
Considering differences in pottery, dates from radiocarbon dating, and comparative study with neighboring regions, including Maritime province and northeastern China, it is understood that the Naifel'd group appeared in the lowland of Zeya-Bureya in the end of the 7th century and the Troitskoe group settled in Zeya River valley and Amur River valley in the 8th century. These two groups independently developed in different regions of western Amur region up to the 10th century.
Along with information on the subsistence economy and pottery manufacturing Troitskoe group, archaeological data from these three sites provided information on the relationships among Heishui Mohe (Naifel'd) and Sumo Mohe (Troitskoe) groups and a local culture, Northern Shiwei (Mikhailovka) culture in the second half of the first millennium. These data will be significant and invaluable resource in the study of Maritime region, Mohes of China, and Balhae.
