『牧隱詩藁』를 통해 본 고려 말 李穡의 일상 —1379년(우왕 5)의 사례— (A Restoration of Lee Saek(李穡)'s Everyday life in 1379 —based on his poems from Mog-eun Sigo(牧隱詩藁)—)

초록

이색(1328~1396)의 문집인 『牧隱集』(『牧隱詩藁』와 『牧隱文藁』)은 지금까지 남아 있는 고려시대의 문집 중 분량이 가장 많다. 그런 만큼 역사 연구에서 좋은 자료가 되지만, 문집의 시문들은 일반 史書와 그 활용 방법을 달리해야만 한다. 사서가 저술된 시점에서 저자의 인식을 종합적으로 보여주는 데 비하여, 문집의 시문들은 긴 시간에 걸쳐 지어졌을 뿐 아니라, 그때그때의 생각과 감정을 표현하고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 문집의 시문들을 사료로 활용하기 위해서는 우선 작품 연보를 만들어 각 작품이 지어진 시점을 밝혀야 한다. 그리고 시문들은 정치사, 사상사 등에 대한 거시적인 연구보다는 일상사에 대한 미시적 연구에 더 좋은 자료가 된다.
이 논문은 『목은시고』의 시문 가운데 1379년에 지어진 981題의 시를 이용하여 그 한 해 동안 이색의 일상을 복원하고자 한 것이다. 우선, 相避親을 기준으로 하여 兩側的 親屬 범위의 친족들을 가족재구성[Family Reconstruction]의 방법으로 조사하였다. 그 결과 1379년 당시 이색의 本族과 外族은 물론, 妻族도 그다지 번성한 편이 아니었음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 1379년 한 해 동안 이색의 정치 활동을 조사하여, 그가 1371년 이후 관직에 나가지 않고 있었을 뿐 아니라 정치활동을 활발하게 하지 않았으며, 1379년 10월에 복직되었지만 몇 개월 만에 다시 물러났음을 밝혔다. 이것이 곧 당시 이색의 정치 · 사회적 위상이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
1379년에 이색은 52세의 노인이었고, 부인 권씨와 장남 이종덕 부부, 그리고 어린 손자들과 함께 개경 묘각동의 집에서 살았다. 관직에서 물러나 있었지만, 韓山君으로서 녹봉을 지급받았으며, 고향인 한산과 면주에 있는 토지, 1363년에 지급받은 공신전, 부인 권씨의 재산 등으로 생활하였다. 특히 1378년에는 여주 천녕현의 토지를 사전으로 지급받았고, 그밖에 다른 사람들에게 글을 지어주고 받은 사례금이 이 시기 이색의 주요한 수입원이었다.
이색의 일상생활에서 가장 많은 비중을 차지한 것은 시를 짓는 일이었다. 그밖에 집안일로는 각종 제사에 참석하는 일이 중요했는데, 1379년 한 해 동안 어머니와 처부, 처조부, 처조모, 처외조모의 기재에 참석하였다. 주로 처가의 제사에 참석했고, 본가와 외가의 제사에 대한 언급이 없는 점이 주목되었다.
마지막으로, 1379년 한 해 동안 이색의 교유관계를 조사하였다. 이색과 어울린 사람은 약 100명 정도였는데, 그 가운데는 과거에 급제한 新興儒臣들이 가장 많았고, 그밖에도 고위 관료나 耆老들과도 폭넓게 왕래하였다. 승려들과도 왕래가 잦았는데, 그 가운데 상당수는 글 값을 매개로 한 것으로 추정하였다.

영어초록

The Mog-eunJip[牧隱集, a combination of Mog-eun Sigo(牧隱詩藁) and Mog-eun Mun'go(牧隱文藁)], the collection of Lee Saek (1328-1396)'s writings, has the largest volume among the existing anthologies of the Goryeo dynasty. The book provides such a massive amount of primary sources to work on; however, it is necessary for historians to devise a new method to deal with this type of material since it is not just record but poetry. I reckon that historical records usually exhibit the author’s general understanding on the society or circumstances while poetry shows the author’s instant feelings and thoughts on the spot. Thus, the first thing that historians who deal with the poetry should do is to file the poetry in a chronological order. Also I recommend using poems as materials for the micro-history such as history of everyday life rather than for the macro-history such as political or philosophical history.
In this paper, I tried to restore Lee Saeks’s everyday life of 1379 based on his nine hundred and eighty one poems written in 1379. First I reconstructed his family line by tracing his relatives from both mother’s and father’s side focusing on the ‘Sang pi relatives(相避親, a special range of relatives who were not allowed to work together in the same office in order to avoid injustice conducts).’ The result tells that all the family lines of Lee Saek—his father’s, his mother’s and his in-laws—were not in the condition of flourishing. I also followed his political activities; since 1371 he was neither serving as an official nor participating in political debates. He once reappointed in the tenth month of 1379; but soon he retired again. These circumstances that I restored based on information from the poems demonstrates Lee Saek’s social and political status.
In 1379, Lee Saek, an old man at the age of fifty two, was living in Myogak-dong, Gaegyeong - the capital of Goryeo, together with his wife(née Ms. Gwon) and Lee Jongdeok(Lee Saek's eldest son)'s family, including his wife and sons. Although retired from the official post, Lee Saek was regularly paid by the government as he was still holding the honorary title of Hansan gun(韓山君). His properties, including lands in home town Hansan and in Myeonju, the fields for merit subject(功臣田) granted in 1363, and his wife’s fortune also consisted of the main source of his income for a living. In 1378 some more lands in Cheonnyeonghyeon, Yeoju, which endowed by the king of the dynasty, were added to Lee Saek’s property. In addition to these, he also was paid for his well crafted writings.
Writing poems took most of Lee Saek’s time; other than that, he put priorities on the ancestral memorial services. The memorial services that he participated in 1379 were as follows: services for his mother, father-in-law, grand parents-in-law, and mother of mother-in-law. It is interesting that he took part in the services mostly for his in-laws without any mention on services for his father’s or mother’s family.
Last, I pursued Lee Saek’s social relationship. Lee Saek made friends approximately with one hundred people. Among those, the Sinheung-yusin(新興儒臣, a newly rising Confucianist officials who passed the civil examination) was the largest party; high officials and retired statesmen also had good relations with Lee Saek. He associated with Buddhist monks as well; I presume that Lee Saek wrote for most of the monks.
