초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the semantic differences and similarities among the synonymous verbs finish, end, complete, stop, quit, cease, halt, and terminate as well as to analyze the noun collocations shown as their complements through the Corpus of Contemporary American English. This paper demonstrates that although the verbs share the common meaning of termination, they have some semantic differences in terms of the degree of completion of the event. The semantic characteristic of finish is that it implies the full completion of the event. That of end is that it implies interruption without any resumption. In particular, stop allows a reading which implies a possible resumption of the event. We found that these semantic differences of verbs are reflected in their taking up as their complements the collocations which have temporal differences; therefore, the verbs involve some different categories of collocations. This study reveals how the semantic properties of noun collocations which collocate with each verb are very helpful in distinguishing the semantic meanings of synonymous verbs of termination.
