초록

筆者는 2013년부터 北京大學 圖書館과 Harvard Yen-Ching Library 등에서 淸代 로마字母 文獻資料:① 官話課本(Mandarin Book) ② 漢․英字典(Chinese-English Dictionary) ③ 聖經音譯本(the Bible) 등을 수집하여 여기에 반영되어 있는 淸末 당시 官話가 普通話로 어떻게 形成되는가의 過程을 考究할 수 있었다.
Calvin Wilson Mateer은 중국에서의 초기 선교가 좌절되자, 선교 전략과 방법을 수정하여 인재를 양성하고, 중국 국적의 선교사를 양성하고자 하였다.Calvin Wilson Mateer은 1863년 중국에 건너와 1864년 登州에 登州文會館(Tengchow College, 1876-1884)을 설립하였다.
淸代後期 중국에 입국한 서양인들은 그들의 言語障礙를 극복하기 위해 먼저 漢語와 漢字를 학습하기 시작했다. 그 때 Calvin Wilson Mateer가 처음 접촉한 漢語敎材는 Robert Morrison이 편찬한 『五車韻府』 (A Dictionary of the Chinese Language)이다. 그 후 선교사, 외교관, 상인 등 서양인들은Morrison의 이 교재를 수정하여 Thomas Wade가 편찬한 『語言自邇集』이 19세기 후반 서양인들에게 가장 영향력이 있는 漢語敎材이다.
淸代後期 西洋宣敎師가 中國에 온 目的은 중국에 基督敎를 宣敎하기 위함이다. 미국 선교사 Calvin Wilson Mateer는 중국에서 활동하는 선교사의 漢語 학습을 위해 『官話類編』(A Course of Mandarin Lessons: Based on Idiom)을 편찬했다. 이 漢語敎材는 당시 크게 중시 받지 못했다19세기 이전에는 유럽의 西洋人들은 漢語의 學習에 관심이 크게 없었으며, 또 당시 淸 朝廷도 외국인에게 漢語를 가르치는 것을 엄격하게 금지했다. 당시 朝鮮의 司譯院, 西洋의 宣敎師, 日本의 貿易通事들이 사용하는 漢語口語는 南京官話이었는데, 조정에서 통용되는 北京官話는 그들에게 크게 重視를 받지 못했다. 그러나 1차 阿片戰爭(1840)이후 南京條約의 체결로 인해 西洋의 宣敎師, 外交官, 商人, 旅行家 등이 자유롭게 중국에 출입국하게 되었다. 그래서 당시 中國에 居住하는 서양인의 시각은 자연 南京官話에서 北京官話로 옮겨졌다. 따라서 北京官話는 주도적인 地位를 확보하여 淸代後期 學堂에서 사용하는 官話敎材(Mandarin Book)의 기준이 되었다. 서양 선교사들은 北京官話를 學習하기 위해 그들에게 적당한 漢語 敎科書가 필요하게 되었다. 19세기 초에는 漢語학습에 도움이 되는 漢語課本(교과서)이 거의 없었지만, 1807년 최초의 基督敎 선교사인 Morrison이 Macao에 들어와 基督敎의 선교 활동을 시작하면서 유럽인들은 漢語 학습과 연구에 관심을 갖게 된다.
筆者는 그간 “西洋人의 文獻資料:官話課本(Mandarin Book) 漢․英字典(Chinese-English Dictionary)에 反映된 官話”에 대해 考究했는데, 이 논문에서는 광범위한 과제중의 한 부분으로 Calvin Wilson Mateer이 편찬한 『官話類編』(A Course of Mandarin Lessons: Based on Idiom)에 反映된 淸代後期 官話音系”를 고찰한다.

영어초록

Since 2013, the author has been collecting written sources in the Roman alphabet from the Qing Dynasty from the Peking University Library and Harvard-Yenching Library, including: ① Mandarin Book ② Chinese-English Dictionary ③ the Bible, etc. Through this collection, the author was able to study the process by which late Qing Mandarin, as manifested in these sources, transformed into Putonghua.
When Calvin Wilson Mateer’s early missionary work in China encountered setbacks, he revised his strategy and approach to cultivate talent and train missionaries of Chinese nationality. Mateer arrived in China in 1863 and subsequently established Tengchow College (1876-1884) in Dengzhou (登州) in 1864.
Westerners arriving in China in the late Qing Dynasty began to learn the Chinese language (漢語) and Chinese characters (漢字) to overcome the language barrier. The first Chinese language textbook Mateer encountered at the time was A Dictionary of the Chinese Language (五車 韻府), compiled by Robert Morrison. Afterwards, Westerners such as missionaries, diplomats, and merchants modified Morrison’s work, and Yuyan zi’erji (語言自邇集), compiled by Thomas Wade, emerged as the most influential Chinese language textbook for Westerners in the late 19th century.
Western missionaries in the late Qing Dynasty aimed to propagate Christianity in China. American missionary Calvin Wilson Mateer compiled A Course of Mandarin Lessons: Based on Idiom (官話類編) to facilitate language learning for missionaries in China. However, this Chinese language textbook did not garner much attention at the time.
Before the 19 th century, European Westerners were not particularly interested in learning Chinese, and the Qing court strictly prohibited the teaching of Chinese to foreigners. At the time, the spoken Chinese used by Joseon’s Bureau of Interpreters, Western missionaries, and Japanese trade interpreters was Nanjing Mandarin, and they did not attach much importance to Beijing Mandarin, used in the imperial court. However, following the First Opium War (1840) and the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing, Western missionaries, diplomats, merchants, and travelers were allowed to freely enter and leave China. Consequently, the perspective of Westerners residing in China naturally shifted from Nanjing Mandarin to Beijing Mandarin. The latter therefore secured a dominant position, becoming the standard for the Mandarin Book used in schools in the late Qing Dynasty. Western missionaries needed appropriate Chinese language textbooks to learn Beijing Mandarin. In the early 19 th century, Chinese language textbooks helpful for learning Chinese were scarce.
However, when Morrison, the first Christian missionary, arrived in Macao in 1807 and began Christian missionary activities, Europeans developed an interest in learning and researching Chinese.
The author has been researching “ Westerners’ Documents: Mandarin as Reflected in the Mandarin Book (官話課本) and Chinese-English Dictionary.” This paper, which is part of a broader project, examines Chinese phonetics of the late Qing dynasty as reflected in A Course of Mandarin Lessons: Based on Idiom (官話類編), compiled by Calvin Wilson Mateer.
