나옹혜근의 고려말 불교 주도와 여말선초 나옹혜근 문도의 활약 (Naong Hyegeon's leadership of Buddhism in the Late Goryeo Dynasty and Naong Hyegeon's disciples’ activities in the Late Goryeo and early Joseon Dynasty)

초록

고려말 삼사 경한‧보우‧혜근 가운데 실질적으로 불교계를 주도한 이는 공민왕사 혜근이다. 혜근이 고려말 불교를 주도한 배경에는 서천 108조인 지공(指空, 1300~1361)의 후광과 공민왕이 주관한 공부선의 시험관 그리고 민중친화력이 있었다. 그리고 입적할 당시 많은 이적이 나타났고, 수많은 사리를 남겨 민중들이 열광적으로 추모했다.
혜근이 왕사가 된 이후 머물렀던 사찰로 대표 문도들이 주지를 했던 사찰 가운데 송광사와 회암사가 매우 중요한 사찰이다. 송광사는 고려중기 선종을 대표하는 지눌을 비롯해 수선사계의 많은 소승을 배출한 사굴산문의 대표 사찰로 동방제일도량이라 불렸다. 고려말 나옹혜근과 그 문도인 환암혼수·무학자초·혜암상총‧고봉법장이 주지를 했다. 송광사는 혜근의 선법을 이은 혼수와 증명삼화상의 계보를 이은 자초가 모두 주지를 하고 있다.
오늘날 송광사 16국사에 국사인 환암혼수는 제외하고 고봉법장을 넣어 16국사라 말한다. 법장은 국사가 아니었음에도 불구하고 조선초 송광사를 크게 중창한 인물로 국사전에 봉안되었기 때문이다.
기산(綺山)은 송광사연혁(松廣寺沿革)에서 고봉법장 대신에 환암혼수를 16국사에 넣고 있으며, 보조이하 수선사계의 법을 나옹과 무학이 잇고 있다고 했다. 16국사에 대한 역사적 배경을 살펴 16국사에 대한 인식을 바꾸어야 할 필요성을 제기하고 있다.
송광사는 ‘지눌-…-혜근-혼수’의 국내 조계선 법맥을 이어온 사찰이고, 회암사는 ‘지공-나옹-무학’ 삼화상의 법맥을 이어온 사찰이다. ‘혜근-혼수’가 공부선을 통한 사법전등이라면 ‘혜근-자초’는 민중친화의 교화전등이라 할 수 있다. 회암사는 폐사되어 사라졌으니 이제 송광사가 조계선과 삼화상 법맥을 모두 아우르는 중심사찰이 되어야 한다.

영어초록

Among the three monks of the Late Goryeo Dynasty, Gyeonghan, Bowoo, and Hyegeon, the one who actually led the Buddhist society was Hyegeon, the mentor of King Gongmin. In the background of Hyegeon leading Buddhism in the late Goryeo Dynasty, there were the halo of Jigong, the 108th of the Indian Lineage, the examiner of Kunghu zen, which was supervised by King Gongmin, and the friendliness of the people. When he died, many miracles appeared, and he left many relics, which the people enthusiastically commemorated.
Songkwang temple and Hoiam temple are very important temples among the temples that Hyegeon stayed at after becoming the mentor of king and where Hyegeon’s leading disciples became the chief priest. Songkwang temple was called the best temple of Korea as the representative temple of Sakulsanmoon, which produced many monks of the Sooseon Temple Lineage, including Jinul who represented the Zen sect of the middle Goryeo Dynasty. At the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, Naong Hyegeon and his disciples, Hwanam Honsoo, Muhak Jacho, Hyeam Sangchong, and Gobong Beobjang became the chief priest at the temple. Honsoo, who succeeded Hyegeon's Zen Linage, and Jacho, who inherited the genealogy of the three monks become the chief priest at Songkwang temple.
Today, 16 National Preceptors of Songkwang temple are called 16 National Preceptors by adding Gobong Beobjang, excluding Hwanam Honsoo, a National Preceptor. This is because, although Beobjang was not a National Preceptor, he was enshrined in the house of National Preceptors as an important figure who rebuilt Songkwang temple in the early Joseon Dynasty.
Gisan said that in The History of Songkwang temple, Hwanam Honsoo is included in the 16 National Preceptors of Songkwang temple instead of Gobong Beobjang, and Naong and Muhak succeeded the law of the Suseonsagye after Bojo. By examining the historical background of the 16 National Preceptors, the necessity of changing the perception of the history of the 16 National Preceptors is raised.
Songkwang temple is a temple that has continued the Lineage of domestic Jogye Zen of ‘Jinul-…-Hyegeon-Honsoo’, and Hoiam temple is a temple that has continued the Lineage of the three monks, ‘Jigong-Naong-Muhak’. If ‘Hyegeon-Honsoo’ is the transmission of Zen, ‘Hyegeon-Jacho’ is the people-friendly transmission of enlightenment. Since Hoiam temple was ruined and disappeared, Songkwang temple should now become the central temple encompassing the Lineage of Jogye Zen and the three monks.
