초록

This paper presents research trends in ‘semantic neology’ and discusses issues related to conceptual category settings, corpus extraction and dictionary descriptions. A few case studies of semantic change identification or automatic detection have been conducted, from which it appears that there is no unified method for identifying or automatically detecting semantic changes. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that semantic change in respect to ‘neologism’ needs to be researched in the fields of Korean linguistics and lexicography. There is indeed a need for identifying and understanding the various aspects of semantic change in order to supplement dictionaries. This study reviews previous research trends in semantic neologism extraction or identification and aims to design a methodology that is suitable for the Korean language is use. Chapter 2 investigates previous studies of semantic neology extraction and discusses the provisional definition of semantic neology. Chapter 3 tackles the issues relating to the Korean semantic neology in terms of extraction and identification, such as issues arising from corpus, source data, methodology, and determining criteria. Finally, Chapter 4 examines the implications for semantic neology research in Korean linguistics and Korean lexicography, and suggest directions for future research.
