초록

세계화의 현실을 살아가면서 물질적, 인적 교류에 대한 관심이 커져가고 있다. 이와 더불어 이주에 대한 역사적 접근, 즉 이주사 연구도 여러 시공간적 영역을 아우르면서 다 양한 주제에 초점을 맞추며 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 이주사의 여러 주제 중에 특히 산업 화와 더불어 유럽 전역에서 일어난 엄청난 규모와 범위의 이주는 19세기를 이주의 세기 로 특징짓게 하는 결정적인 일련의 사건이었다. 특히나 국민국가의 형성과 더불어 국경 을 넘는 원거리 이주의 증가는 매우 새롭고 독특한 현상으로 주목을 받아왔고, 그 중에서 도 대양을 건너가는 대서양 이주는 국제 이주의 전형적인 사례로 인식되어왔다. 이런 중 요성과 의미부여에도 불구하고, 1960년대에 본격화된 대서양 이주에 관한 연구는 주로 미국을 위주로 한 수용국의 입장에서 송출국가별 사례를 추적하는 일국적 시각에서 전 개되었다. 1970년대와 1980년대에는 유럽과 아메리카의 기타 국가들에 초점을 맞춘 연 구들이 진행되기는 했지만, 여전히 일방적이거나 부분적인 측면을 극복하지는 못했다. 최근에 와서야 지방 내 이주와 유럽 내 이주, 그리고 대서양 이주를 유기적으로 이해하려 는 시도들이 등장하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 19세기 유럽인들의 대서양 이주의 규모, 이주 의 세부적인 지형들과 이주 패턴 등을 시간대별로 개괄하면서 변화의 양상들을 살펴볼 것이다. 특히 대서양 이주가 본격화된 19세기 말에서 20세기 초의 시기에 초점을 맞추어 이주 증가의 추세와 기술적 원인 그리고 이주 관행과 동기 변화 등을 관찰하면서, 대서양 을 빈번히 왕래하는 유럽인들의 초국적 노동시장이 형성되는 과정을 살펴볼 것이다. 그 런 점에서 증기선과 철도로 대표되는 운송수단의 발전이라는 기술적 측면이 대서양 이 주의 폭증에 기여한 바를 확인할 수 있다. 1870년-1914년 사이의 대서양 이주와 관련해 서 확인할 수 있는 또 하나의 결론은 그것이 노동력의 일방적인 공급을 토대로 한 초국적 노동시장의 확대가 아니라 대서양에서 양방향으로 작동하는 훨씬 더 유동적인 광범위한 노동시장이었다는 점이다.

영어초록

As we live in an era of globalization, the interest in material and human exchanges is growing. Accordingly, the historical approach to migration, that is, migration studies has been actively developed that focused on various topics, covering a variety of spatial and temporal areas. Among the various themes of migration, the immense size and scope of migration throughout Europe especially due to industrialization was a series of crucial events that characterized the nineteenth century as a century of migration. In particular, with the emergence of the nation-state, the increase of long-distance migrations across borders has attracted attention as a very new and unique phenomenon. Among them, transatlantic migration across the ocean has been recognized as a typical example of international migration. Despite this importance and significance, research on the transatlantic migration got into stride in the 1960s has been developed from a national view that tracks the cases of the sending countries from the viewpoint of the recipient countries, In the 1970s and 1980s, though studies focused on various countries in Europe and the Americas were under way, they still did not overcome one-sided or partial aspects. Only recently, attempts have been made to understand systematically intra-regional migration, intra-European migration, and transatlantic migration. In this study, we examine aspects of change by time of day, looking around the size of transatlantic migration, detailed geographical features of migration and migratory patterns in the nineteenth century. In particular, focusing on the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the transatlantic migration got on a firm track, we observe the trends in migration, technological causes, migration practices and motivational changes, finally studying the process of forming a transnational labor market for Europeans. In this respect, it can be seen that the technological aspect such as the development of transportation represented by steamer and railroad contributed to the explosion of transatlantic migration. Another conclusion to be drawn with respect to the transatlantic migration between 1870 and 1914 is that it was not a widening of the transnational labor market based on the unilateral supply of labor, but rather a far more flexible and widespread labor market operating in both directions.
