토킹-픽처: 풍경과 말의 역량을 통한 기억의 환기 (Talking-Picture: Recollection of Memory via ‘puissance’ of landscape and word)

초록

본고는 일반적인 영화의 재현적인 내레이션 체계에서 벗어나 시각이미지와 음향이미지가 가지는 고유의 힘을 강조하는 이미지 구성 방식에 주목한다. 말과 사운드의 순수한 역량이 자율적으로 펼쳐지면서, 풍경이나 장소의 역량으로 구성된 시각이미지와 다채로운 방식으로 조응하는 것이다. 이때 각각의 이미지 간에는 힘의 위계가 없고 설사 그 위계가 발생한다 하더라도 그 효과는 매우 일시적이다. 이처럼 풍경과 말의 역량을 중심으로 구성되는 영화들을 ‘토킹-픽쳐’라 부를 수 있다. 본고는 이와 같은 이미지 구성 방식이 영화 전체의 내러티브 구조 속에서 어떤 순간 돌출되고, 어떤 방식으로 작동하여 심층적 의미를 이끌어내는지 살펴볼 것이다.
본고가 분석대상으로 삼는 것은 장-마리 스트라우브와 다니엘 위예의 <시실리아!>(1999)와 마누엘 드 올리베이라의 <세계의 시초로의 여행>(1997)이다. 두 영화는 형식적으로 ‘토킹-픽쳐’의 특징에 부합하며, 중심 내러티브가 명확한 까닭에 형식과 내용의 상관관계를 분석하기에 용이하다. 두 영화는 모두 길 위에서 시작되어 중심인물의 여정을 따라 진행되는 로드무비 형식을 띤다. <시실리아!>의 주인공 남자는 기차를 타고 이동하며 그 내부에서 만나는 사람들과 대화를 나눈다. <세계의 시초로의 여행>의 네 인물들은 자동차를 타고 이동하며 대화를 나누고, 여행 도중 특정한 지역에 다다르면 차에서 내려 그 장소를 탐방하며 대화를 나눈다. 그 장소와 관련된 사적 기억들은 다른 인물들의 기억이나 역사적 지식과 만나 다층적인 함의를 발생시킨다.
두 영화에서, 여정의 종착지는 누군가의 집이다. 이 장소는 어떠한 근원적인 장소이며, 들뢰즈적 의미에서 배아를 품고 있는 결정체로 존재한다. 이 장소가 품고 있는 지질학적, 지층적 기억은 구체적이거나 실증적인 역사를 넘어 보다 근본적인 것, 즉 들뢰즈적 의미에서 잠재적인 것으로서의 기억이다. 따라서 이 여정은 기억의 심층으로 수렴하는 과정이 되는데, 이때 두 영화는 풍경과 말의 역량을 통해 역사적 기억과 개인적 기억을 환기하고 그 심층으로 침잠해 들어간다. 이를 베르그손적인 ‘순수 기억’이 일순간 기억 이미지로 현실화되는 과정, 혹은 들뢰즈적 ‘순수 사건’의 표면 효과와 관련하여 사유해 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This study focused not on general movie’s reproductive narration system but on such an image compositional method as emphasizing the inherent puissance of visual and auditory images. As the pure ‘puissance’ of word and sound is unfolded spontaneously, it becomes to diversely agree with visual images, which consist of the ‘puissance’ of landscape or site. At this time, every image has no hierarchy of the power, and even if there is the hierarchy of the power, its effect is quite temporarily. Like this, the movie that mainly consists of the ‘puissance’ of landscape and word can be referred to as ‘the movie of landscape and word’ or ‘talking-picture’. This study examined ‘when this method of image composition protrudes momentarily in the whole narrative structure of movie’, and ‘how it works to derive underneath meanings.’Study subjects were Jean-Marie Straub & Danièle Huillet’s <Sicilia!> (1999) and Manoel de Oliveira’s <Viagem ao Princípio do Mundo> (1997). Since these two movies accord with the characteristics of ‘talking-picture’ formally and their main narratives are clear, it is easy to analyze the correlation between forms and contents. Both films have the form of road movie which starts on the street and develops with main character’s journey. The hero of <Sicilia!> takes train and converses with passengers on the train. The four characters of <Viagem ao Princípio do Mundo> take a car and converse each other during their journey and then get off the car in a certain area and visit it while talking about the site. Private memory of the site encounters with other character’s memory or historical knowledge and then produces multi-layer implications.
In the two films, journey terminates in someone’s house. This place is a fundamental site and exists as a crystal that incubates an embryo from the perspective of Gilles Deleuze. This site’s geologic and stratum memory is a more fundamental memory, namely a ‘virtuel’ memory from the perspective of Gilles Deleuze, beyond a concrete or practical history. On this account, the journey becomes a process of converging on the underlayer of memory, and the two films ventilate historic and private memory through the capability of landscape and word and then withdraw into its underlayer. This phenomenon can be examined in relation to the actualizing process of Bergsonian ‘souvenir pur’ into a momentary memorial image, or in relation to the surface effect of Deleuze’s ‘evénement pur.’
