북촌의 지명 유래와 한말일제시기 인식 변화 (The origin of the name, bukchon ＆ change of perception at the end of Joseon Dynasty and during Japanese colonial period)

초록

본고는 북촌 지역의 역사적 인식과 지명 유래의 배경을 검토하기 위해서 첫째, 북촌 지명 유래 고찰과 조선후기－일제시기 당대 사람들의 인식을 정리하고 둘째, 일제시기 민족적 공감대로서의 역할을 살펴보았다. 종각을 기준으로 북쪽이라는 지리적 위치나, 한성부 北部라는 공간적 위치도 북촌지명의 유래로 생각할 수 있으나 그 배경에는 북극성을 정치의 중심으로 보는 맥락에서 王이 거처하는 곳으로서 北이라는 방위의 상징성에서 유래하였다고도 생각할 수 있다. 경복궁과 창덕궁 사이에 위치하는 이 지역에는 궁궐 건설 사상인 택중론과 천문사상이 반영되어 있음을 읽어볼 수 있기 때문이다. 북촌이라는 말은 조선 중기 이후 정착된 말로 여겨지고 있으나 『조선왕조실록』에 처음 등장하는 때가 1777년이므로 이 시기에는 북촌이라는 말과 인식이 형성되어 있었음을 확실히 알 수 있다. 그런데 정조조의 단 3번의 기술은 부정적인 이미지로 일관되고 있다. 중심지이었던 북촌은 늘 권력다툼의 중심이었고 치열한 역사의 무대였기 때문에 이러한 비판도 받을 수밖에 없었던 것으로 생각된다.
둘째, 한말-일제시대 당대 사람들의 조선후기 북촌에 대한 인식을 살펴보면 조선시대 당대 인식과는 달리 긍정적으로 심지어 최고의 문반만이 살 수 있는 지역 선망의 대상으로 인식되고 있다. 1906년의 북촌 家屋主의 직업과 신분분포 조사에 의하면 양반과 관료가 43.6%를 차지하고 있어 양반과 관료 중심의 지역임을 알 수 있다. 이러한 북촌에 대한 권세가 거주지로서의 이미지는 일제시기 일본인에게도 공유되었다.
셋째, 1924년에는 북촌지역에 일본인 인구가 급증하여 섞이어 사는 상태가 되었음에도 불구하고 북촌의 침체된 분위기 묘사는 남촌과의 대비 속에서 조선인의 설날 양상을 대변하는 글로 표현되고 있다. 이러한 북촌 양상에 관한 기술은 일제시기의 불공평한 정책과 민족차별을 대변하는 역할을 하였다. 이와 동시에 북촌이라는 지역적 특성을 묘사함으로써 민족적 공감대를 형성할 수 있는 토대 역할을 하였던 것이 아닐까 생각한다.
조선시대에는 종각 이북 양궁 사이를 북촌으로 인식하였던 반면, 일제시기에는 종각이북을 중심으로 하여 혜화동 일대나 창경궁까지 북촌에 포함시키기도 하였다. 현재 북촌 한옥마을은 종각이 아니라 안국역에서 북쪽, 양궁 사이로 범위가 축소되었다. 시기적으로 공간 범위와 인식에 차이가 있다. 이러한 측면이 바로 역사적으로 당대 사람들의 인식 속에서 존재해 온 북촌의 공간적인 특성이며, 조선시대와 일제시기의 두 흐름이 현재 북촌에 대한 인식이나 전통한옥마을로서의 근거를 해석하는 중요한 두 축으로 기능하고 있지 않을까 생각된다.

영어초록

This paper intends to examine historical perception on the area of bukchon (North village) and its origin. To this end, first, the paper examined where the name bukchon had originated and how it had been recognized by people from the late Joseon period to Japanese colonial period. Second, the paper looked into the bukchon’s role of creating national consensus during the Japanese colonial period. Bukchon is located north of Jonggak (bell tower) and sits in the North bu (district) among the five districts of Hanseongbu (Seoul City). Therefore, the name of bukchon can be considered to have originated from its location. On the other hand, however, its origin can also be found in symbolism since the North means the direction of the place where the king resides and Polaris is reckoned to be at the center of politics. This is also because the bukchon area, located between the two palaces of Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, reflects the idea on royal palace construction based on the Taekjung theory (the capital should be located in the center of the country) and the astronomical idea.


The name of bukchon is believed to have begun to be used widespread since the mid-Joseon period, but it is clear that the name itself and a concept on it were formed in 1777 when the name first appeared in Joseon Wangjo Sillok (Annals of the Joseon Dynasty). Notably, the name of bukchon was mentioned only three times throughout the King Jeongjo period and all in a negative manner. As a center for politics and culture, bukchon had always been the center of power struggle and the stage for fierce moments in history. This is why buckchon had been the target of such criticism.


Secondly, looking at the way people in the periods of the late Joseon and Japanese colonial rule think of bukchon in the late Joseon period, we can see that bukchon was the envy of contemporary people, an area where only the top class of the munban (the scholarly class) was allowed to reside. Studies on jobs and social status of home owners in bukchon in 1906 found that the Yangban class (the gentry or aristocracy) and government officers accounted for 43.6% of all residents in bukchon. This demonstrates that bukchon was mainly resided by the Yangban class and government officers. Even Japanese people in the Japanese colonial rule period recognized buckon as an area inhabited by the rich and the powerful.


Thirdly, bukchon was described in a writing as a stagnant area in comparison with namchon (South village) which had developed further, although a soaring number of Japanese people had begun to live with Joseon people in bukchon in 1924. This writing illustrates how Joseon people spent their Lunar New Year’s Day, representing Japan’s unfair policies and discrimination against Joseon people. The description of bukchon, at the same time, may have laid the foundation to create national consensus.


During the Joseon period, bukchon was recognized as an area between the two palaces of Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung north of Jonggak. On the other hand, during the Japanese colonial period, bukchon even covered all Hyehwa-dong and Changgyeonggung palace areas, centered on the north of Jonggak. Currently, the bukchon hanok village encompasses a smaller area between the two palaces of Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, north of Anguk Station (Seoul Subway Line 3). This shows that Korean people’s perception on the spatial scope of bukchon has changed according to the times, defining a spatial characteristic of bukchon which people have recognized throughout history.
