신라말 고려초 청송 지역의 호족 (Powerful Clan in the Cheongsong Region during the Late Silla and Early Goryeo Period)

초록

나말려초는 우리 역사상 가장 격동의 시기 중 하나였다. 신라의 구질서가 쇠퇴하고, 후삼국을 거치면서 고려라는 새로운 국가체제로 전환되어 나갔다. 다방면에 걸쳐 이루어진 사회변동은 중앙이 아니라 지방에서부터 시작되었다. 지방사회의 역동성이 어떤 시기보다 강열하게 표출되었다. 이 시기 새로운 정치세력으로 등장하여 사회변동을 이끈 주인공을 흔히 豪族이라고 한다. 호족은 새로운 사상조류였던 禪宗과 밀접하였던 것으로 파악되고 있다. 이 글은 청송(진보) 지역을 중심으로 활동한 호족인 眞寶城主 洪術과 載岩城將軍 善弼에 대한 사례 연구이다.
홍술은 聞韶郡의 吏職者(村主)출신으로, 나말려초의 격동기에 眞寶縣의 성주로 성장하였다. 이후 광역의 행정단위였던 의성지역으로 옮겨 그곳을 대표하는 호족이 되었다. 하지만, 경상도 북부 지역을 둘러싼 고려와 후백제의 쟁패과정에서 견훤의 침공으로 전사하고 말았다. 선필은 慶州崔氏 출신으로, 신라에서 파견된 眞安縣의 지방관에서 장군(호족)으로 자립하였다. 그는 경상도 북부지역에 웅거하면서 고려와 신라의 외교 문제에 많은 공을 세웠다. 특히, 930년 古昌전투의 승리에 일조하면서 태조로부터 높은 대우를 받았다.
한편, 선필은 선종불교에 대해서도 관심을 가졌다. 그는 9산선문 중 迦智山門 출신의 禪僧인 眞空대사 □運(855~937)을 지원하였다. 특히, □운은 927년에서 929년까지 대략 2~3년 정도 선필의 후원을 받으면서 진안현의 사원에 머물다가, 태조의 초청으로 小伯山寺로 이석했다. □운이 머문 지역은 920년에서 930년대를 전후한 후삼국 쟁패기에 고려･후백제 양국이 치열하게 각축을 벌이던 전략적인 요충지였다. 이 지역에는 태조와 최선필 등의 호족이 밀접하게 얽혀 있었다. 이 두 세력의 연결을 매개한 한 인물이 □운이었다. □운과 선필 등의 결연은 나말려초 선종과 호족의 결합 양상을 보여주는 사례이다.

영어초록

The end of Silla and the early Goryeo period was a period of the greatest turbulence in Korean history. Along with the decline in the old order of Silla, there was a shift to the system of the new country of Goryeo as the region passed through the later Three Kingdoms period. Social changes that occurred in many aspects began from local regions rather than the central region. The dynamics of local society was exhibited more intensively than any other period. The heroes who emerged as the new political power and led such social changes during this period are commonly called powerful clans. A powerful clan is thought to be close to a Zen sect, which was a new ideological trend. This article is a case study on the lord of a castle in Jinbo, Hong Sul, who is a member of a powerful clan that were active mainly in the Cheongson(Jinbo) region, and a general of Jeamseong(castle), Seol Pil.
Hong Sul was originally a descendant of a person with official duties(chief of the village) at Munsogun, and he progressed to become the lord of a castle in Jinanhyeon during the turbulent times in the period at the end of Silla and early Goryeo. After that, he moved to the Euiseong region, which was in a broad sense an administrative unit, and became a representative of a powerful clan of the region ; however, he died in the battle from the attack of Gyeon Hwueon during the struggle for supremacy between Goryeo and later Baekjae over the northern region of Gyeongsang-do.
Seon Pil was from the Gyeongju Choi family, and he established himself independently as a general(powerful clan) who arose from being a local high officer of Jinanhyeon dispatched by Silla. While holding and defending his own territory in the northern region of Gyeongsang-do, he performed many meritorious deeds in the diplomatic issues of Goryeo and Silla. In particular, as he contributed to the victory of the Gochang combat in 930, he was treated very well by King Taejo.
Meanwhile, Seon Pil was also interested in the Zen sect of Buddhism. He sponsored Jin Gong-□woon(□運, 855~937), a high Zen Buddhist priest from Gajisanmun among the Gusan-Seonmun. In particular, □woon stayed at the Buddhist temple of Jinanhyeon while being sponsored by Seon Pil for about 2~3 years from 927~929, and he was relocated to the temple in Sobaeksan(Mt.) at the invitation of King Taejo.
The region where □woon stayed was a strategic location where both Goryeo and later Baekjae engaged fiercely in heated competition during the period of struggle for supremacy in the later Three Kingdoms period from around the 920s~930s. In this region, King Taejo and a powerful clan including Choi Seon-pil were closely related. It was □woon who mediated the connection of these two powers. The alliance of □woon and Seon Pil and others is a case that shows the collaborative pattern of a Zen sect and a powerful clan during the early Silla and late Goryeo period.
