초록

전통적인 서구 윤리철학이 보편주의의 질서 속에서 객관적인 관점을 지향한다면, 에코페미니스트의 윤리학은 서구의 근대 보편주의 윤리학을 비판하는 과정에서 구체화되었다. 보편주의의 도덕적 원칙 추구는 동일성의 가정 아래 객관성과 보편성에 준거를 두고 있다면, 그래서 어떤 판단이라도 그 자신이 보편적이라는 확신 속에서 했다면 윤리적으로 정당하다는 결론에 도달하게 되는 측면이 있다. 에코페미니스트는 추상적이고 보편적 준거 속에 행위는 존재하되 행위자의 개인성과 다양한 맥락이 고려하고자 한다. 에코페미니스트 윤리는 보편적인 도덕 철학 자체를 부정하는 것이 아니라 자기 자신의 도덕적 고려에 들지 않으므로 예외자를 산출하는 보편주의를 반대하는 것이다. 특히 인간중심주의와 남성중심주의의 지배적 확신이 자연과 여성을 동일한 예외의 영역 속에 자리매김하고 인간타자의 영역을 확대한다는 점에 반발한다.
도덕적 ‘행위자’들의 이야기들을 경청해야만 도덕적 상황을 제대로 인식할 수 있다는 것이라면, 인간 타자와 비인간 타자의 목소리를 어떻게 들을 수 있는가. 이런 물음을 가지고 구병모의 재난소설을 읽을 수 있겠다. 구병모 소설에서 재난은 그것이 자연재난이든 인간재난이든 공동체에서 배제된 타자의 절규로 해석된다. 목소리를 잃은 수동적인 예외자가 아니라 능동적인 주체로 해석될 것을 요청하는 방식으로서 재난이 재현되는 것인데, 자연을 실체화하여 행동하게 하고 절규하게 하는 환상적 은유 장치는 이를 위한 전략적 고안으로 이해된다. 구병모 소설의 환상적 은유(「조장기」, 「덩굴손증후군의 내력」, 「파르마코스」 등)는 타자를 투명한 존재가 아니라 재난의 형식으로 자신을 드러내고 대화를 청하는 새로운 존재로 재인식하게 해준다. 구병모의 공포 발견의 서사는 ‘타자 다시 쓰기’의 서사윤리로 간주될 만하다.
다른 한편으로 구병모 소설의 영성(「곤충도감」, 「이물」, 「덩쿨손증후군의 내력」)은 자신과 타인에 대한 배려와 대화 가능성을 지구의 다른 존재에까지 확장한다. 「곤충도감」의 기묘한 영성은 성스러움과 불순함 사이의 위태로운 경계에서 생명에 대한 의미 있는 질문을 던짐으로써 윤리적 계기를 마련한다. 주인공의 평온한 태도에 깃든 생명에 대한 확신은, 여성의 신체가 생산의 자원으로 환원되는 것이 아니라 생명에 관한 의미 있는 질문을 던지는 장소로 재탄생하고 있음을 알리는 것이다. 여성과 자연의 연결을 즉각적이고 감각적으로 경험하기 바라는 영성은, 합리적이고 이성적인 가치 체계가 놓치고 있을 것이라고 가정되는 중요한 맥락을 더 충분히 드러낼 수 있다는 점에 에코페미니스트의 각별한 방법이 된다.
구병모의 공포 발견 서사가 지니는 윤리적 계기는 강조될 만하다. 서사장르 자체가 전체론을 경계하면서 차이를 확인하는 것이고 그것이 구체적이고 생생한 언어로써 가능한 것이라면, 공포발견의 서사는 반생태적이고 반생명적인 폭력을 구체적으로 맥락화한다. 그 다음 차례는 독자의 시선이 소설 세계에 감정이입하고 교감함으로써 소설 상황을 재맥락화하는 것이다. 생태비평의 관점으로 말하면 그것은 “인간이 무엇인지 그리고 도덕적으로 말해서 인간에게 비인간 세계가 무엇인지를 명확하게 보기 위해 고도로 맥락 짓는 시도(a highly contextual attempt)”를 제공한다.

영어초록

While the traditional Western ethical philosophy aims for an objective viewpoint in the order of universalism, the ecofeminist ethics was embodied in the process of criticizing the western modern universalist ethics. If the pursuit of universalism's moral principles is based on objectivity and universality under the assumption of identity, then if any judgment is made in the conviction that it is universal, there is an aspect of reaching the conclusion that it is ethically justified. Ecofeminists want to consider the individuality of the actor and various contexts, although the action exists in an abstract and universal standard. Ecofeminist ethics do not deny universal moral philosophy per se, but oppose universalism that produces exceptions because it does not come into its own moral considerations. In particular, it is opposed to the fact that the dominant convictions of anthropocentrism and androcentrism place nature and women in the same domain of exception and expand the domain of the human other.
If we can properly recognize the moral situation only by listening to the stories of moral “actor/agent,” how can we hear the voices of the human and non-human others? With this question, we can read the disaster novel of Gu Byeong-mo. In Gu Byeong-mo's novels, disasters, whether natural or human, are interpreted as the cry of others excluded from the community. Disaster is reproduced as a way of requesting interpretation as an active subject rather than a passive exception who has lost its voice. The fantastical metaphors of Gu Byeong-mo's novels (「Chojanggi」, 「History of Tendril Syndrome」, 「Pharmakos」) make us recognize the other as a new being who reveals himself in the form of a disaster and asks for dialogue, not a transparent being. Gu Byeong-mo's narrative of discovery of fear can be regarded as the narrative ethics of 'rewriting others'.
On the other hand, the spirituality of Gu Byeong-mo's novels (「Insect Encyclopedia」, 「Foreign Object」, 「History of Tendril Syndrome」) extends consideration for oneself and others and the possibility of dialogue to other beings on the earth. The bizarre spirituality of 「Insect Encyclopedia」 provides an ethical opportunity by asking meaningful questions about life in the precarious boundary between sacredness and impurity. The conviction of life in the main character's calm attitude is to inform that the female body is being reborn as a place to ask meaningful questions about life, rather than being reduced to a resource for production. A spirituality that seeks to experience the connection between women and nature immediately and sensibly is a particular ecofeminist method in that it can more fully reveal an important context that rational value systems are supposed to be missing.
It is worth emphasizing the ethical momentum of Gu Byeong-mo's narrative of discovery of fear. If the narrative genre itself is to confirm differences while being wary of holism, and that is possible with concrete and vivid language, the narrative of discovery of fear concretely contextualizes anti-ecological and anti-life violence. The next step is to recontextualize the novel situation by having the reader empathize with and sympathize with the world of the novel. In terms of ecocriticism, it offers “a highly contextual attempt to see clearly what a human being and what the non-human world might be, morally speaking, for human beings.”
