조영석 작 〈조정만 송하안식도〉 연구: 초상화에 투영된 ‘은일(隱逸) 의식’ (A Study of Jo Yeongseok’s Resting Under the Pine and the Concept of Reclusion Embodied in the Portraiture)

초록

〈송하안식도(松下安息圖)〉는 여러 선행 연구자들에 의해 언급되었던 그리고 그 제작 기록만 자세히 전하고 그 그림은 전하지 않는 것으로 여겨졌던 조영석(趙榮祏, 1686-1761) 작 조정만(趙正萬, 1656-1739)의 초상화이다. 이 그림은 18세기를 대표하는 문인화가 중 한 명인 조영석이 직접 그 제작 과정과 표현 의도를 자세히 소개한, 그가 그린 유일한 산수 배경의 초상화일 뿐 아니라 그가 자신의 선사(先師)인 이희조(李喜朝, 1655-1724)의 친우(親友)였던 조정만의 거듭된 부탁을 받아 성심성의껏 제작한 작품이란 측면에서 그의 대표작으로 새로이 조명될 수 있다.
〈송하안식도〉는 그 주인공인 조정만이 가졌던 은일·탈속 지향의 정신이 강하게 반영된 그림으로 분석된다. 조정만은 평생 관직 생활에 몸담으면서도 은일·탈속의 삶을 열망했으며, 이러한 열망을 때때로 그림이란 매체를 통해 드러내고자 했다. 그 결과 그는 자기 주변의 몇몇 문인화가들에게 그림 제작을 번번이 부탁해 그들로부터 그림을 그려 받았다. 이 초상화는 바로 이러한 과정을 통해 완성된 그림이다. 조정만으로부터 초상화 제작 의뢰를 받은 조영석은 현실적인 듯하면서도 이상적으로 보이는 은거 공간을 구성하는 한편, 다양한 상징물들을 활용해 그 공간 안에 ‘아취 있는 일상과 탈속·은거의 삶’을 즐기는 조정만의 모습을 구체적으로 재현함으로써 은거와 탈속의 삶에 대한 그의 염원 그리고 그의 고매한 정신과 일기(逸氣)를 표현하고자 했다. 따라서 이 그림은 조영석이 그 주문자가 요구한 사항들을 단순하게 반영해 완성한 초상화로 한정해 볼 수 없다. 18세기를 대표하는 문인화가로 평가되는 조영석은 명대(明代) 문인화단을 주도했던 오파(吳派) 화가들의 회화 제작 경향과 사상을 수용하고 또한 명나라 말기 중국의 산수 배경 초상화의 도상과 표현 방식을 충분히 인지한 바탕 위에서, 또한 조정만이 지향하고 염원했던 것에 대한 충분한 이해를 토대로 이 그림을 그렸다. 〈송하안식도〉는 18세기 초 한 문사(文士)의 ‘은자 이미지’를 구축하기 위해 그와 그의 의뢰를 받은 한 문인화가가 어떤 노력을 펼쳤으며 어떤 과정을 거쳤는지를 구체적으로 보여 준다. 이런 측면에서 이 그림은 18세기 초 이후 유행했던 산수 배경의 초상화나 사인풍속화(士人風俗畵)의 성격과 그 내용을 이해하는 데 있어 중요한 작품으로 평가된다.

영어초록

The painting Resting Under the Pine by Jo Yeongseok (1686-1761) is a portrait of Jo Jeongman (1656-1739), which was previously believed not to have survived until the present day, although there are detailed records of its production. This work of Jo Yeongseok, one of the most representative literati painters of 18th-century Joseon Korea, is currently his only portrait featuring a landscape background. Furthermore, there is a precise account of the process and of the intentions behind its creation that is found in one of the artist’s writings. After repeated requests from Jo Jeong-man, who was a close friend of his teacher Yi Huijo (1655-1724), Jo Yeongseok must have executed this painting with utmost sincerity. Therefore, it needs to be examined anew by highlighting that it is a masterpiece of the artist.
Resting Under the Pine is analyzed as a remarkable painting strongly reflecting the sitter’s wish for reclusion and freedom from social conventions. While dedicating his entire life to public service, Jo Jeongman longed for a life in reclusion, and occasionally turned to express this desire through the medium of painting. Thus, he often asked literati artists to paint different genres of paintings for himself and received several from them. This portrait originates from such a context.
On the one hand, Jo Yeongseok, whom Jo Jeongman commissioned for a portrait, presented a place of retreat in the painting that seems realistic while also idealistic. On the other hand, he used diverse symbols to depict the sitter enjoying “days of refinement and a reclusive life far away from the vulgar world” in order to express his yearning for reclusion as well as his noble mind and detached spirit. In doing so, the painter responded to Jo Jeongman’s wish that the refined lifestyle he pursued throughout his life would be remembered and passed on forever. Consequently, this work cannot be considered a portrait simply mirroring what was requested by the client. Jo Yeongseok embraced the painting methods and ideas of the Wu school, which led the Chinese literati artist circle during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Correspondingly, he created the portrait with sufficient awareness about the iconography and style of portraits with landscape backgrounds derived from late Ming paintings. In addition to that, he fully understood what his client, a Confucianist and government official, was aspiring and longing for.
After all, Resting Under the Pine demonstrates in detail what process and what efforts a Joseon literati painter had to go through at the beginning of the 18th century, when a scholar asked the painter to create his portrait as the image of a recluse. In this regard, this portrait can be evaluated as an important work for comprehending the character and content of portraits with landscape backgrounds as well as genre paintings of literati life that became popular after the early 18th century.
