초록

1920년대 중반, 신문 만평과 사회주의의 만남, 이는 사회주의가 문화적 표상으로 성립하기 시작한 역사적 계기로 간주될 만하다. 신문사의 독자투고라는 제도적 기획을 독자가 능동적으로 전유할 수 있었던 것도, 그리고 사회주의에 대한 낙관적 전망과 함께 민족의 종차를 인식하면서 무산계급의 당파성을 역설할 수 있었던 것도, 전적으로 정론성과 대중성이 결합된 ‘신문 만평’이 사회주의적 실천들의 약진이 현저했던 ‘1920년대 중반’과 만난 결과이다. 식민지시대 내내 이처럼 사회주의의 문화적 표상이 활력을 보였던 시대는 없었다. 명징하게 전달되는 시각표상은 당대의 시사적 의제와 결합되어 사회주의적 시선을 구축해갔다. 그것은 한편으로는 사회주의 타자들이 조성해놓은 세계에 대한 비판이었으며, 다른 한편으로는 사회주의 승리가 역사적 필연적임을 선언하는 과정이었다. 특히 이 과정에서 ‘일본’이 인용되고 있음은 주목할 만한 현상이었다.
그러나 사회주의가 공론 장에서 구축(驅逐)되는 것과 함께 신문 만평의 활력이 소멸해가면서, 사회주의 전도에 대한 낙관성은 이제 현실을 초과하는 ‘잉여’가 되어갔다. 취체와 검열로 대변되는 억압적인 상황은 심층을 재질서화는데, 가장 위협적 것은 반－사회주의 담론이 일상화되어갔다는 점일 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그 포기되지 않은 잉여는 어떤 방식으로든 존재하기 마련이고, 그것은 1920년대 중반 신문 만평을 비롯한 사회주의적 문화 실천들로부터 경험된 표상들을 계속해서 기억하길 요구한다. 이 기억된 표상이 중요한 이유는 그것이 단순히 경험된 지각의 재생이 아니라 사회주의적 인식론의 결과이자 그 효과의 반경이 ‘주의자’의 범위를 벗어나는 것이기 때문이다. 그런 점에서 그 지속의 과정, 즉 기억된 표상의 현존은 식민지시대 문화사에서 중요하게 다뤄질 필요가 있을 것이다.

영어초록

In the mid-1920s, the encounter of the newspaper cartoons and Social- ism is worthy of notice. This is because it is the historical moment when Socialism has been constructed as a cultural representation. The reader was able to appropriate actively the system of the readers’ con- tribution of the newspaper, and the cartoons asserted the partisanship of the proletarian classes, cognizing the optimistic prospect for Socialism and the specific difference of nation. All this entirely is the result that ‘the newspaper cartoon’ combined politics and popularity met ‘mid-1920s’ become remarkable the rush of Socialism action. During the colonial period, this time is the most important moment when the newspaper cartoon actively showed the cultural representation of Socialism. The visual representations has constructed Socialism point of view, combin- ing the agenda of current event of those days. On the one this was the critical comments for the world created according to Socialism Other, on the other this was the declaring course that the victory of Socialism was inevitable. Specially the quotation of ‘Japan’ is worthy of notice in this course.
But Socialism has driven away in public opinion field, then the ac- tivity of the newspaper cartoon has disappeared. The optimistic for the prospects of Socialism has become ‘the surplus’ exceeding reality. The oppressive situation spoken for the control and the censorship re-system- atize the depths, the most threatening thing is that the discourse of anti- Socialism has become daily. Nevertheless, the surplus is certain to exist anyway, and it demand to remember the representation experienced from the cultural actions of Socialism including the newspaper cartoon in the mid-1920s. This memorized representation is important. Because not that it is not simply the rewind of the experienced perception, but that it is the effect of Socialism epistemology, and the radius of the effect go beyond the sphere of ‘a ideologist’. In terms of that, the process of the continuation, exactly the exist of the memorized representation should be treated in the cultural history of colonial period.
