고려시대 일휘문막새의 출현과 전개 (An Appearance and Deployment of Ilhwimunmaksae during the Goeyro Era)

초록

본 연구는 고려기와를 표상하는 대표적 형식인 일휘문막새를 기존의 분석방법과는 다른 새로운 시각에서 범형(範形)이라는 개념을 사용하여 출현배경과 전개양상을 검토한 것이다.
11세기 중엽에 갑자기 출현한 일휘문막새는 화엄경의 주존불인 비로자나불의 상징인 광명 즉 태양이구체적으로 형상화한 것으로, 출현과 성행은 문종이 법상종에서 화엄종으로 종단을 교체하면서 일어난고려왕실 불교의 사상적 변화가 주요 배경과 원인으로 작용했을 것으로 추정된다. 이러한 요인으로 출현한 일휘문막새는 화엄종(비로자나불)이라는 범형이 구체화되면서 기존에 성행하던 연화문수막새나 당초문암막새를 대신하는 새로운 형식으로 왕실건물과 사찰에 주로 사용된다. 일휘문막새는 몽고 침입과 고려정부의 개경환도 이후 범자문, 용문, 봉황문 등이 시문되면서 퇴조하는 현상을 보이지만, 일부 형식적요소는 조선 초기까지 지속된다.
일휘문막새는 형식적인 특징을 따라 범형에 충실한 초기의 전형적인 것을 Ⅰ형식(전형형식)으로, 전형적인 형식에서 벗어나 속성변화와 형태 변이가 이루어져 변형된 Ⅱ형식(변형형식)으로 대별할 수 있다.
Ⅰ형식은 드림새에 반구형돌기를 중심으로 원형돌대 2조를 일정한 간격을 두고 장식하고 주연을 따라서다시 돌대 1조를 시문한 것이 특징이며, 파주 혜음원지와 경주 황룡사지, 안성 봉업사지, 개경 고려궁성출토품이 대표적이다. Ⅱ형식은 반구형돌기를 중심으로 원형돌대를 시문하거나 무문인 것이 특징이며, 반구형돌기와 원형돌대를 표현하는 방식에 따라 크게 ⅡA형과 ⅡB형으로 구분된다. 대표적인 사례로는파주 혜음원지, 경주 황룡사지, 충주 숭선사지와 정토사지, 여주의 고달사지와 원향사지, 원주의 법천사지와 거돈사지, 합천 영암사지, 논산 개태사지 출토품을 들 수 있다.

This study reviews the background of appearance and deployment trend of the representative style to depict the roof tile of Goryeo, Ilhwimunmaksae, by using the concept of a model under a new point of view that is different from another existing analysis method.
Ilhwimunmaksae that was suddenly appeared in the middle of the 11th century is formulating the light or sun, the symbol of the main Statute of Buddha in Hua-en School that the appearance and prevalence could be attributable to work of ideological change in the Goryeo Royal Palace occurring from exchanging the religious order from the Pubsang School to Hua-en School as the main background and cause. As for such a factor, Ilhwimunmaksae appeared since the model of Hua-en School (Vairocana) and it is a new style to replace Yeonhwamunsumaksae or Dangchomunammaksae that was popular at the time that it was mainly used in Royal Palace buildings and temples. Ilhwimunmaksae displayed phenomenon to regress with Beomjamun (writing of tiger), Yongmun (writing of dragon), Bonghwangmun (writing of phoenix) and others becoming poetry and literature after the invasion of Mongolia and the Goryeo government’s return it's capital to Gaegyeong, but certain style factors were continued until the early period of the Joseon Dynasty.
Ilhwimunmaksae may be contrasted by Type 1 (Modeling Style) for the early model that is substantive to the model following the formative characteristics and Type 2 (Changing Style) that is modified with the change of attributes and change of shape by breaking away from conventional style. Type Ⅰ has its characteristics to inscribe poetry and literature for 1 set of pivot along the decoration line with a certain interval of 2 sets of circular pivot around the semisphere bump in the dreamsae (sagging down the tip of the roof tile), and the representative ones are the excavated items of Hyeeummwonji of Paju, Hwangreungsa-Ji of Gyeongju, Bongupsaji of Anseong and Goryeo Palace of Gaegyeong. Type Ⅱ has the characteristics of poetry and literature for circular pivot around the semi-sphere bump or no writing at all, and depending on the method of expressing the semi-sphere bump and circular pivot, it is largely classified for Type Ⅱ A and Type Ⅱ B. As for the representative cases, there are excavated items from Hyeeummwonji of Paju, Hwangreungsa-Ji of Gyeongju, Sungseonsaji and Jeongtosaji of Chungju, Gosalsaji and Wonhyangsaji of Yeoju, Beopcheonsaji and Geodunsaji of Wonju and Youngamsaji of Hapcheon, Gaetaesaji of Nonsan.
