초록

쿠루마(Ahmadou Kourouma)의 두 번째 소설인 『모네, 모독과 도전(Monnè, outrages et défis)』은 화자의 중요성이 극대화된 작품이다. 이 소설은 한 명의 화자가 이야기를 펼쳐 가는 것이 아니라 여러 명의 화자가 등장하며, 이들의 개입은 상당히 무질서하게 나타난다. 본 논문에서는 우선 이러한 화자들을 ‘익명화자’, ‘집단화자’, ‘개별화자’의 세 카테고리로 묶을 것을 제안한다. 익명화자는 소설 속에 모습을 드러내지 않고 이야기의 바깥에서 서술하는 존재이다. 익명화자는 객관적인 관점에서 이야기를 진행하지만, 때로는 등장인물의 속내를 파고드는 주관성을 보이기도 한다. 집단화자는 ‘우리’라는 일인칭 복수의 형태로 모습을 드러내는데 이는 자신이 속해있는 집단을 대표한다. 대부분의 경우, 소설의 배경이 되는 소바(Soba)나라의 백성을 가리키지만 때로는 주인공 지기(Djigui)의 측근들, 혹은 아프리카 흑인들까지도 포함한다. 개별화자는 주로 ‘나’라고 하는 일인칭 단수로 서술을 하는 존재인데 주인공 지기를 비롯하여, 몇 명의 화자가 존재한다. 이러한 화자들은 특별한 규칙 없이 이야기에 개입한다. 소설이 이처럼 다양한 화자와 무질서한 서술에 의지하는 것은, 우선 소설이 아프리카 문학의 특성인 구전성에 기대고 있음을 보여준다. 동시에 지극히 역설적이지만, 소설은 서구 현대 소설에서 나타나는 화자의 다성성(多聲性)을 구현하고 있기도 하다. 그러나 무엇보다도 중요한 것은, 이러한 서술 형식이 아프리카의 비극적 역사가 하나의 목소리로 표현될 수 없음을 확인시켜준다는 사실이다.

In Monnè, outrages et défis d'Ahmadou Kourouma, the narration develops under the angle of the polyphony, and of the narrative heterogeneousness. This novel is characterized by the alternation of several narrators. We can discern three categories of narrator. Firstly "the anonymous narrator" can be observed. By this narrator, the characters are described from the third-person point of view. This narrator is not part of the diegesis(diégèse) she or he presents, nor a character in the situations she or he recounts. The anonymous narrator is appeared most frequently in Monnè, outrages et défis.
Secondly, "the collectif narrator" has to be considered. This narrator corresponds to "we", the first-person plural pronoun, which is situated within the diegesis. The narrator often makes his presence known by personal pronouns, adjectives, and possessive pronouns. During a large part of the novel, he seems to identify with the people of Soba ( the noun of the country). He is called in the name of "those of Soba". He reveals a close bond, indeed almost a kinship with them.
Finally, we can speak of "the individual narrators" such as Djigui, Djéliba, Fadoua. This narrator speaks in the way of the first-person single pronoun, "I". King Djigui, hero of the novel, is the most important narrator. Through numerous interior monologues, Djigui carries on the narration, changing perspectives and takes note of a position that can be public. The individual narrator recalls his past in order to justify his actions and his behaviors: so there is a part of propaganda in his discourse.
The numerous narrative voices in the novel permit to multiply the points of view. They can present several versions or explications of one same event. It is now necessary to point out that, Monnè, outrages et défis is, for the Africans, a history of humiliation. This novel relates the Malinke conquested by the French. It uncovers the misfortunes that the Africans had to suffer. The multiple narrative voices increase and deepen this tragic situation. This miserable historic reality can not be told in a satisfactory manner in unique narrator.
