요약 이 논문은 레슬리 마몬 실코(Leslie Marmon Silko)의 『의식』(Ceremony)에 나타난 트라우마의 원인을 모계중심의 원주민 사회에서의 정체성 상실과 전쟁으로 보고, 여성 및 다른 세계와의관계회복과 원주민 이야기의 구성을 통해 트라우마의 극복방안을 모색해보고자 한다. 『의식』에서주인공 타요(Tayo)는 백인 아버지와 미국 원주민 어머니 사이에서 태어난 혼혈로 원주민과 백인사회 두 곳에서 모두 배척당한 삶을 살아오고 있었다. 모계를 근간으로 하는 원주민사회에서의정체성 상실은 혼혈 타요의 불안한 잠재심리로 자리하게 된다. 그의 정체성 트라우마는 남성적지배이데올로기의 산실인 전쟁이라는 파괴적인 상황에 직면하자 증폭되게 되고, 타요의 신체및 정신을 직접적으로 위협하게 된다. 타요는 이후 트라우마를 이겨낼 해결책을 모색하는데, 과거의 시각에만 몰두해 수직적이고 백인사회를 배척만 하는 단선적인 치료는 그에게 도움이되지 않는다. 시대가 변함에 따라 트라우마의 해결책도 다변화의 필요성을 지니게 된 것이다.
타요는 다른 세계를 이해하고 여성들과의 관계를 통해 여성적 공감과 이야기의 서술로 원주민의정체성을 해결해나갈 단초를 마련하게 된다. 그리하여 타요는 자신의 부족을 중심으로 미국원주민의 역사적 트라우마를 바로잡는 상징적인 존재가 된다. 결국 트라우마의 치료는 자신만의이야기를 만들어가고 원주민부족 원로와 여성, 다른 인종의 사람들과 공감과 협력을 통해 미국원주민의 이야기를 만들어가는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 여성적 공감과 이야기의 서술을 통한 트라우마의 치료는 미국 원주민의 역사적 트라우마와 주인공 타요의 정체성 트라우마를 해결해나갈중요한 요소로 작용한다.

영어초록

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to investigate the aspects of trauma and healing in Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony. During the 1960s, Native American writers such as N. Scott Momaday, Louise Erdrich, and Lesile Silko emerged as leading novelists in the so-called Native American Renaissance, expanding the horizon of Native American literary circle. Even though American society has entered the era of multiculturalism, Native American life is not improving. They are trapped in the trauma of the past, and their present lives are heavily affected by the trauma.
Based on the trauma theorists including Dominick LaCapra, Cathy Caruth, and Judith Herman, as well as Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, and Homi Bhabha, this paper attempts to analyze the protagonist Tayo’s trauma and healing process in Silko’s Ceremony. The main character of the novel, Tayo, is a biracial Native American who has lived apart from American society and from any other place in the Native American community. Therefore, the first part examines the aspects of trauma in Ceremony. In Tayo's identity trauma, alienation from family members has been affected as well as his historical trauma. Concerning war trauma, Tayo confronts severe trauma by joining World War Ⅱ . After the war, Tayo has traumatic symptoms such as hallucinations and speech problems which make his daily life impossible. To examine Tayo's trauma, this trauma analysis attempts to apply Jung and Freud's theories as well as Herman and Assmann. The next chapter delves into the ways in which Silko tries to overcome her own trauma as well as Tayo's trauma through ceremonial practice and narrative strategy. Tayo returns to the Indian reservation after the war to heal his trauma. The sorcerer Ku'oosh is first introduced to only find inhumanity in white society and solely relies on traditional methods of treatment, failing to solve Tayo's trauma. The sorcerer Betoni is immersed in how traditional and modern treatment are harmonized, opening the way for Tayo to heal. Narrative style is an important strategy to heal trauma, along with ceremonial practices. Collecting and connecting stories is an effort by Native Americans to preserve their identity and to survive on the American continent.
The second part of healing will discuss the link between writing and trauma therapy in conjunction with Scriptotherapy. The Native American writers, represented by Silko, are encouraging writing to inform the outside world of Native American realities and attempt to heal their own identity trauma. In conclusion, this paper argues that the trauma caused by the Native Americans' past is affecting modern times. As such, trauma has spread over generations and is a factor that determines the fate of the nation. From such a point of view, it takes collective power from the community to heal the Native American trauma. Therefore, Ceremony is the crucial text which shows the writer's effort to resolve individual and collective trauma of Native Americans.
