초록

Employing trauma theories, this paper explores the visceral effects of war on the survivors who have to live with the recurring traumatic memories of the past in Chang-rae Lee’s "The Surrendered." The novel demonstrates that traumatic memories of war haunt the survivors to the extent that they cannot live a normal life but become a victim of war trauma because of the unspeakable events they have experienced. Through the depictions of the interrelated lives of the three main characters, the author examines the different reactions they show towards the haunting forces of war trauma registered in their psyches and bodies. He vividly depicts the ruined lives of the victims of war who have been affected by the traumatic memory of the past and how they struggle to live with those moment throughout their lives. The author, however, demonstrates that victims may find ways to come to terms with the unremitting power of trauma by identifying themselves with other survivors who have gone through similar events. He shows that the undefeated and resilient spirit to survive can be achieved through the recognition of others’ suffering and through finding the link to the past.
