고따마 붓다의 정각과 십이연기 (On the Twelvefold Chain of Dependent Origination (Pratītyasamutpāda) in the Description of Gautama Buddha's Enlightenment)

초록

이 연구는 고따마 붓다의 정각 기술에서 여리작의하는 동안 반야에 의해 여실하게 현관된 지식으로서 십이연기가 다양한 연기계열이 있음에도 그 대표성을 가지고 사성제를 보충하거나 대체할 수 있는 근거가 무엇인지를, Nagaropamasūtra 라는 경전과 그 대응되는 한역본들의 분석을 통해 해명하고자 하는 작업이다. 물론 내용적으로도 붓다들의 정각 기술과 관련된 연기계열을 모두 검토하였다.
이 경전들에 따르면 붓다의 정각 기술은 여리작의하는 동안 연기법을 여실하게 현관하는 단계와 그 현관된 연기지를 사성제의 틀에 적용시켜 새로운 다르마로서 여실지견하는 단계로서 결합되어 있다. 이렇게 새로운 다르마로 재구성한 이유는 개인적 해탈체험에 제한하지 않고 중생구제와 관련된 진리의 발견으로 간주하는 붓다 정각의 특수성을 드러내기 위해서일 것이다. 한마디로 누구도 넘볼 수 없는 붓다만의 자내증 체험으로서 이것에 대한 여실지견은 완전한 깨달음에 도달했다는 인식과 동일한 것이고, 그 이후 팔정도라는 옛 길을 따라가면서 발견한 사성제라는 옛 도시 위에 재건된 십이연기라는 것이다. 그와 동시에 이념사적으로도 이것이 다른 것으로 대체할 수 없는 원래요소였다는 것을 증명하기 위해 고따마 붓다만의 해탈체험이 아니라 예전 붓다들도 공통적으로 체험한 것이라는 교리와 연계된다. 이런 차원에서 고따마 붓다에 의해 여실지견된 십이연기가 그 제자들에 의해 재생산되어야만 하는 보편적 진리로서 정립되었을 것이고, 다양한 연기계열이 있음에도 그 대표성을 가지게 되었을 것이다.

영어초록

In this article, I would like to explore the Twelvefold Chain of Dependent Origination (Pratītyasamutpāda) clearly realizedby the Buddha through discriminating insight (prajñā) obtainedwhile delving into the perception of mutual causality. I conduct adetailed analysis of the description of the Buddha's enlightenmentin Nagaropamasūtra and its extant Chinese translations. Thefocus of this paper is the question why the Twelvefold Chain ofPratītyasamutpāda is the canonical system of dependent originationamong various others, and its rationale for supplementing orsubstituting the Four Noble Truths.
According to texts, the enlightenment of the Buddha isdescribed in two steps. First is attaining clear insight on thePratītyasamutpāda formula by discriminating insight (prajñā) andthe second is the application of the elements of Pratītyasamutpādato the framework of Four Noble Truths as a new Dharma.
The purpose of reconstructing a new Dharma describes the uniqueness of the Buddha's enlightenment. Rather than being limited to the experience of personal liberation, the Buddha's enlightenment is unique in the discovery of the truth for the salvation of all sentient beings. In short, a clear realization of the reality of the Twelvefold Chain of Pratītyasamutpāda is equivalent to having arrived at a full comprehension of the greatest inner liberating experience of Gautama Buddha. In the Nagaropamasūtra it is likened the Twelvefold Chain was reconstructed on the old city of the Four Noble Truths that the Buddha discovered while following the old Eightfold Path. Simultaneously, it is not only the Gautama Buddha's experience but also the experience of enlightenment by all Buddhas, as a fundamental, unreplaceable ideological element.
In conclusion, the Twelvefold Chain of Pratītyasamutpādacan be understood as the content of the Buddha's enlightenment,a universal truth that must be reproduced by his disciples; thusdespite the variety of Pratītyasamutpāda formulas it would havebeen established as the representative doctrine.
