This paper is to find a new available way of reading from which Park Ji-Won(朴趾源)’s fiction, Ye-Doek sunsaeng Jeon(穢德先生傳, a Tale of Sir Virtue of Dirt; YD) bears some diverse interpretational levels and its significance, considering the contiguous relationship with Majang-Joen(馬駔傳, a Tale of Horse-Broker; MJ) that is located as the first place in their contextual text, Bangkyeong-gak Oejoeon(放璚閣外傳; BO). For this purpose, it starts with two premises; first, a necessity of new perspective that the literary meaning of YD would be drawn from the circular relationship between BO and its 7 subtexts; second, a calling for close reading that traces surface discourse of YD that would draw an attention to its literary effects.
As developing these premises with finding and interpreting some remarkable tokes, it would possible to indicate two conclusions, as follows. One, we should convert its concept of the author’s preface of BO, 自序, which manages readers to consider it as the natural and objective direction of its texts, Jeon(傳), to that of the (fictional) writer’s preface, which opens the many ways of available literary interpretation, for their relaltionship shows various meaningful margins such as rhetorical effects, discursive registers, and voice. Two, the poly-relationship between the writer’s preface and each texts endows YD with some possibilities of diversified examination in terms of a principle of constructing of YD based on its contiguous relationship to MJ.
Therefore, this study anticipates two interpretative programs; on the one hand, the covert and textual analysis and view to YD which has been considered as the second object in the historical studies on BO and its subtexts; on the other hand, analyzing the mode of deepening thematic aspects of YD after which it took over the discursive strategy and construction from MJ, with utilizing their contiguous arrangement positively.
