초록

The poets Hyesoon Kim and Louise Glück revisit the myths of Baridegi and Persephone to explore death as a tangible realm. They depict death not as an endpoint, but as a transformative space where marginalized beings can be reborn through poetry. This approach fosters a poetic ethics of welcoming others within the realm of death, encouraging us to view death as an ongoing event rather than a disconnected idea. Both poets focus on the suffering of these mythical girls and challenge male-centered language and logical structures through their narratives about death. Baridegi and Persephone are portrayed as figures deprived of basic rights and freedoms within their myths. However, they consistently demonstrate performativity that bridges the gap between the two worlds by reclaiming their voices within Kim and Glück’s poetic space. This paper explores the concept of poetic ethics, examining how the poet transcends the traditional role of the subject. It highlights how the poetic speaker embodies the dead and engages in various death-related actions. By engaging with the experiences of those marginalized by patriarchal values, their works push the boundaries of human thought by generating new meanings around death through poetry, challenging fixed perceptions, and creating new configurations of space and time that dissolve barriers between different worlds. This paper emphasizes the need for a change in the dichotomized and fixed human thought system through the process in which Eastern and Western female poets share common insights into the suffering and death experienced by others. At the same time, it acknowledges that the practice of poetic ethics by the two poets takes different directions, expressing the necessity of practicing poetic ethics and exploring its diverse applications.
