초록

사실의 장소를 재현하기에만 급급하던 무대도 직선과 곡선 그리고 다양한 종류의 색과 빛을 사용하여 단순히 장소의 재현을 넘어 무대 그 자체로 시각적인 의미와 대사를 전달하려는 시도가 리하르트 바그너(Richard Wagner, 1813~1883)로 부터 시작되어 아돌프 아피아(Adolph Appia, 1862~1928)와 고든 크레이그(Gordon Craig, 1872~1966)에 의해 이루어졌으며, 그 결과로 현대에 와서는 무대의 기능을 최대한으로 살린 장소를 배우에게 제공하게 되었다. 이들은 전통적인 박스세트(box-set)에서 탈피하여 다차원적인 공간으로 무대를 대치시켜 수직선과 사선의 다차원 적인 요소를 전달하기에 주력하였고 이것은 공간 속에서의 입체적이고 동적인 요소를 공간으로 확대시킴으로써 움직이는 입체적 빛이 요소가 된 동적이고 다차원적인 건축물이 연극공간의 중심을 형성하게 하였다. 이러한 무대의 변화가 미국에서는 로버트 에드먼드 존스(Robert Edmond Jones, 1887~1954) 그리고 리 사이먼슨(Lee Simonson, 1888~1967)에 의하여 계승되어졌고 신무대술(New StageCraft)의 개념 아래 작품에 대한 철저한 분석과 고증을 바탕으로 그림으로 그려진 평면의 무대가 아닌 빛과 그림자를 이용한 입체적인 무대의 개념을 정립하였다. 이들은 무대디자인 분석을 위한 기본적인 지식으로 선(line), 배치(mass), 색(color), 빛과 그림자(light and shadow)라는 디자인 요소와 내용(contents), 장식(detail), 그리고 표현(expression)이라는 디자인 요인, 그리고 조화(harmony), 균형(balance), 리듬(rhythm)의 디자인 원리에 입각하여 무대를 분석하고 디자인하였다.

영어초록

Theatre art, specifically, has reflected almost constantly the general tendencies of painting. It has often developed in a parallel manner to that of painting; in its revolt against past tradition, and in conforming to the aesthetic principles established by a particular movement, which in themselves are the direct expression of the tendencies of the age.
The core of the study is concerned mainly with the painter's use of the visual elements: color, line, space, texture, and light in painting, and of their subsequent application to stage design: scenery and lighting.
Painter's influence upon theatre architecture, drama, and acting is dealt with only indirectly, or wherever significantly applicable.
The chronology of the study is based on the Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock and Paul Gauguin's painting, as defined in the authoritative sources on the New StageCraft Movement: Robert Edmond Jones and Lee Simonson. Though the parallel developments in theatre tended to antedate those in painting, the same intermediate dates are applied to theatre for better clarification.
The method of study is based on the analysis and description of both the theories and practices as defined in Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock and Paul Gauguin's painting and theatre art.
As John Gassner has indicated, there is needed at the present a better definition and clarification of the aesthetic objectives and development in modern theatre art.
In addition such designer as Boris Aronson, Ben Edwards, Eldon Elder, Peter Larkin, Jo Mielziner, Donald Oenslager, Mincho Lee have strongly indicated the integral influence of the modern developments in painting upon contemporary theatre trends. As far as can be ascertained, however, no comprehensive or analysis of relationship between modern theatre art and painting has been written.
To achieve a better understanding of aesthetic objectives and means in modern stage design particularly, it would seem necessary to turn to the primary sources and influences of the designer's trend in theatre art.
