해남 우항리 대형 공룡발자국 화석 주변에 발달하는 변형특성을 이용한 고환경과 단열생성원인 해석 (Interpretation of paleoenvironment and origin of fractures based on deformation characteristics around Uhangri giant dinosaur footprints in Haenam, Southwest Korea)

초록

한반도 남서부 지역의 경상누층군 백악기 퇴적암에는 다양한 화석들이 발견된다. 특히 전라남도 해남군 우항리 지역에서 관찰되는 우항리층 하부의 흑색 셰일에는 다양한 화석들(공룡·익룡·새 발자국 등)이 보존되어 있다. 이 지역에서 발견되는 화석 주변으로는 몇 가지 흥미로운 점이 관찰된다. 일반적으로 발자국 화석은 미고결퇴적물에서 생성되고, 단열은 고화된 암석에서 취성변형과 관련되어 발달하는 구조로 잘 알려져 있다. 그런데이곳 우항리 공룡발자국 화석산지에서는 공룡의 발자국 주위로 환상의 분포를 보이며 단열들이 발달하고 있다.
이러한 단열과 발자국이 함께 형성되는 발달 메카니즘과 환경은 쉽게 이해하기 어렵다. 따라서 본 연구는 공룡발자국 화석과 주위에 발달하는 단열들에 대한 변형특성과 통계적 분석을 근거로 둘 사이의 연관성을 조사함으로써 단열발달의 역사와 고환경 정보를 취득하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 우리는 단열의 밀도, 방향, 분포양상 등의 특징들에 대하여 측정하고 분석을 수행하였다. 이를 통하여 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 1) 이 지역에는 크게 4개조의 단열군이 발달하고 있다. 2) 3개의 단열군은 공룡발자국이 형성된 이후 암석화가 진행된 취성의 환경에서 발달하였으며, 공룡발자국 주변으로 환상의 분포를 보이는 단열군은 공룡의 발자국형성과 연관된 것으로 해석된다. 3) 이러한 환상의 단열군과 공룡발자국 주변의 만곡된 양상, 그리고 공룡발자국 주변의 긁힌 자국과 중심의 별모양 등은 호수의 물이 빠지면서 건조되어 가는 반취성 환경에서 공룡발자국이 형성되었다는 것을 강하게 지시하고 있다.

영어초록

A large number of dinosaur footprints have been found in the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of theGyeongsang Supergroup in Haenam, the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. In particular, the Uhang-riarea, located in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, has some very well preserved trace fossils. Dinosaur, pterosaur, bird,arthropod ichnites, wood fossils and fossilized bones have been observed in this area. Dinosaur footprints weremainly discovered in black laminated mudstone/shale. Furthermore, a few interesting fracture patterns have alsobeen observed at this site. In particular, in the section around the big dinosaur footprints, some fractures with peculiarform, growing radially from the footprints, have been observed, which develop as a ring shape around the dinosaurfootprints. Dinosaur footprints may be recorded in unconsolidated sediments, while fractures are geologicalstructures related to brittle deformation in lithified rocks. Therefore, it is difficult to understand the mechanismsand conditions under which fractures and footprints could form together. The aim of this study is to understandthe fracture developing mechanism, paleo-environments and the correlation between dinosaur footprint fossilsand surrounding fractures, based on the characteristics of deformation through statistical analysis. For this purpose,we measured and analyzed the characteristics of distribution patterns, geometry, orientation, and density offractures. The conclusions resulting from these analyses are as follows. 1) There are mainly four fracture groupsdeveloped in this area. 2) The three fracture sets of the four groups were developed in solidified brittle environmentssince the dinosaur footprints had already been formed. A fracture group with circular distribution around the bigdinosaur footprints, however, are interpreted to be related with the formation of the footprints. 3) The circular fracture group, the curved bulges around the footprint fossils, and the scratches and star-shapes within the footprintsstrongly indicate that the dinosaurs’ footprint fossils were formed in a semi-brittle environment that occurred duringa drying out phase of the lake.
