황윤석(黃胤錫)의 『이수신편』(理藪新編)에 나타난 이수역학의 문화다원론적 독해 (A Cultural Pluralistic Reading of Mathematical Mechanics in Hwang Yun-seok’s Yisusinpyeon)

초록

본 논문은 조선후기 서양 자연과학을 적극 수용하면서도 전통 성리학의 세계관을 유지했던 이재(頤齋) 황윤석(黃胤錫)의 『이수신편』(理藪新編)에 반영된 이수역학의특징을 문화다원론적 관점에서 조명하고자 하였다. 나아가 서양 자연과학과 천문역법을받아들이면서도 성리학적 세계관을 함께 유지했던 그가 전통 유학의 도덕적 실천론과서양과학의 자연학과 실용학을 융합한 양상을 살펴보았다. 성리학의 형이상학적 자연학과 도덕학을 담고 있는 『성리대전』을 수정 재편집한 황윤석의 『이수신편』은 서양 자연과학을 조선에 수용한 시대적 요청의 결과였고, 그의 학문적 방향을 결정지은 저술이었다.
그는 형이상의 본체와 형이하의 작용을 하나의 전체로 연속성을 가지는 것으로 이해하였는데, 이것은 보편적 원리를 특수한 현상세계의 다양한 변화 속에서 찾고자 하는 것으로 현상 세계의 다원적 양상을 포용하는 의미를 가진다. 또한 그는 오행과 팔괘를 연속성을 가지는 것으로 보는데, 이것은 자연의 생성변화를 매개로 오행(五行)과 팔괘(八卦) 로부터 이루어지는 이수(理數)의 다양한 의미를 설명하고자 하는 것이다. 황윤석은 세계여러 지역의 지리적 특성이 지니는 상대적 다양성을 강조함으로써 문화다원론적 지향을보여 주었다. 그의 이수역학은 기본적으로 전통 유학과 성리학의 도덕적 목표를 지향하고 있으며, 이를 위한 자연학적 기초로서 자연세계에 대한 경험 과학적 법칙에 대한 인식을 포괄하고 있다. 따라서 그의 이수역학은 도덕적 정치적 이상사회를 이루기 위하여경험적이고 실용적인 수단을 탐구하는 의미를 가진다. 요컨대, 『이수신편』의 편찬을 통한 황윤석의 학문적 지향은 전통 유학 및 성리학의 도덕적 세계관과 근대의 실용학과 자연학을 병행 또는 연속성을 가지는 것으로 일관된 체계를 구성하고자 한 점에 특징을 지닌다. 『이수신편』의 체계는 전통 성리학의 형이상학적 자연학과 도덕학, 『주역』의 이수역학에 기초하여 서양과학과 문물, 동아시아의 문화 등 특수하고 다양한 문화를 적극적으로 수용하고자 하는 취지를 가진다는 점에서 문화다원론적 함의를 지닌다.

영어초록

This paper examines the characteristics of mathematical mechanics reflected in Yisusinpyeon by Hwang Yun-seok, Leejae, who actively accepted Western natural sciences in the late Joseon Dynasty but maintained the worldview of traditional Neo-Confucianism, through cultural pluralism. This point of view is highlighted in the paper. Furthermore, while accepting Western natural science and the astronomical calendar, he maintained the NeoConfucian worldview together, and examined the aspect of integrating the moral practice theory of traditional Confucianism and the natural sciences and practical studies of Western world. Hwang Yun-seok’s Yisusinpyeon revised and reedited Seongnidaejeon, which contained the metaphysical physics and morality of Neo-Confucianism, was the result of the demand of the times following the acceptance of Western natural sciences in Joseon.
Hwang Yun-seok understood the body of the metamorphic and the action of the sub-metamorphic as a whole with continuity and an organic connection. This is meant to embrace the plural aspects of the phenomenal world by seeking universal principles in the diverse changes of the particular phenomenal world. He regards the Five Elements and the Eight Trigrams as having continuity, which he tried to explain the various meanings of the number of degrees formed from the Five Elements and the Eight Trigrams through the medium of the change in nature. Hwang Yun-seok embraced cultural diversity by emphasizing understanding of the geographic characteristics of different regions of the world. The description of these geographical characteristics has implications for cultural pluralism.
His Yisuyeokhak is basically oriented toward the moral goal of traditional Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism. He valued the recognition of the empirical scientific laws of the natural world as a natural basis for his moral goals. Therefore, his mathematics has the meaning of exploring empirical and practical means to achieve a moral and political ideal society.
In short, the significance of Hwang Yun-seok’s academic orientation through the compilation of Yisusinpyeon can be found in that he tried to construct a consistent system by having the moral worldview of traditional Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism, modern practicality and natural science in parallel or continuity. The system of Yisusinpyeon has the purpose of actively accepting special and diverse cultures such as Western science, cultural relics, and East Asian culture based on the metaphysical natural sciences and morals of traditional Neo-Confucianism and the Yisuyeokhak of the Book of Changes, which has cultural pluralistic implications.
