墓制를 통해 본 漢城期 百濟의 地域相-龍院里遺蹟圈을 中心으로- (A study on Local identity of Baekje in Hanseong Period - centering on the remains of Yongwon-ri -)

초록

본고에서는 중서부지역의 4~5세기대 묘제를 중심으로 백제의 지역상을 살펴보고자 하였다. 또한 사례연구의 일환으로 묘제변화와 지역상이 뚜렷하게 확인되는 금강유역권의 천안 용원리유적권을 중심으로 지역상을 분석하여 한성기 백제 지방사회의 동향과 특징을 파악하고자 하였다.
한성기 백제의 지역상 검토는 한강 이남의 중서부지역에서 조사된 4~5세기대 고분자료 69지점의 유적현황과 지형분석을 통하여 31개의 지역상을 추론할 수 있었다. 각각의 지역별로 다양한 묘제의 분포와 변화상이 확인되었으며, 각 지역단위는 8~17㎞ 내외의 다양한 규모로 문화적 영역범위를 추론하였다. 이와 같이 지역별로 다양하게 확인되는 묘제전통을 통하여, 백제의 지방사회는 중앙과의 관계형성에도 불구하고 오랫동안 독자적인 문화전통과 재지질서를 유지하고 있었음을 추론할 수 있다.
개별 지역상에 대한 사례연구는 용원리유적권을 중심으로 하였다. 용원리유적은 토광묘를 중심으로 하는 재지집단의 고분군으로, 백제 한성양식 토기와 같은 백제 중앙의 물질문화와 변화상이 인지될 뿐 만 아니라, 재지전통이 강하게 남아있는 토광묘중심 묘제에서 수혈식석곽묘와 횡혈식석실묘와 같은 새로운 묘제로의 변화와 계층화가 빠르게 진행된 집단이다. 이러한 계층화는 동일묘역을 조성하는 집단에만 한정된 것이 아니라, 인근의 화성리지역 집단에 대한 위세품의 재분여와 같은 형태로 확인된다. 따라서 이러한 모습을 통하여 수직적 위계에 기반한 지방사회의 계층화 과정을 파악할 수 있다. 특히 수혈식석곽묘ㆍ횡혈식석실묘와 같은 새로운 묘제는 구조의 규칙성을 보이기보다는 지방사회의 재지 토광묘제 전통이 반영된 토착성과 구조의 다양성이 확인된다. 이러한 묘제의 다양성은 백제의 지방사회가 재지사회의 문화전통에 기반한 상태에서 백제 중앙과 적극적인 관계를 형성하면서 변화된 모습으로 이해할 수 있다. 이와 같은 백제지방사회의 다양한 지역상과 지역문화를 이해함으로써 다수의 지역정치집단을 포괄하고 있는 백제의 다원적이고 개방적인 국가 성격을 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
제한된 지역에서 확인된 고고자료를 중심으로 분포영역에 대한 입지분석과 유형화를 통하여 4~5세기대 백제의 지역상을 검토하는데 있어서 나름의 한계도 적지 않다. 그러나 본 논문은 백제라는 고대국가의 성장이 중앙의 정치세력 중심만이 아닌, 지방세력의 능동적인 관계형성의 노력과 광역의 지방세력에 대한 백제의 포용과 효과적인 통제로 가능하였을 것이라는 생각에, 아직 미답의 형태로 있는 백제 지방사회에 대하여 일부 단면만이라도 이해하고자 한 것이다.

영어초록

This paper is related to the identity of Baekje local regions in the 4th~5th century. The case analysis was tried, through archeological material analysis,centering on the remains of Yongwon-ri which shows local identity best among 31 regions recognized as the basic units of Baekje local society.
The local identity of Baekje in Hanseong Period was tried to be found centering around tomb relics. As the result of the analysis, each local aspect could be reviewed in 31 regional units based on relic statues and topological conditions of 69 tombs of 4th~5th century. In these regional units, various distributions and transitions of tombs could be identified in each region, and it could be inferred a cultural domain showing local characteristics might exist in various scales ranging from 8~17km in each regional unit. That is, it could be known that each regional society maintained its independent cultural tradition and native order for a long term despite its subject position ruled by the central political power of Baekje.
The case analysis was tried, centering on the remains of Yongwon-ri. The remains of Yongwon-ri is a tomb complex of the native group based on the pit-tombs, and through this relics, it is recognized how the material culture within the region changed due to the effect of Hanseong styled pottery of Baekje. This change was not limited to groups having equal tomb complexes, but also might affect the surround ng groups. That is, the hierarchic process of local society confirmed centering around the remains of Yongwon-ri is presumed to have proceeded with through the redistribution of prestige goods to groups of surrounding Hwaseong-ri region. Thus, based on this fact, it can be determined how local society underwent a hierarchic process based on horizontal rank.
Together, this native group is determined to be a pit-tomb-centered group thatrapidly underwent the establishment of the order of rank and structural change of tombs such as the stone-lined tomb and stone-chamber tomb. However, a fact requiring another attention is that these new tomb structures related to stone-lined tombs and stone-chamber tombs have regional native attributes and various forms in which regional tomb type traditions of local society were reflected, rather than showing building regularity. The excavated artifacts come from hierarchically classified tombs mainly consist of prestige goods collected through the relationship with central region of Baekje, and from this view point, it can be comprehended that the hierarchic process of local society was a change occurring by local central forces actively establishing the relationship with the central region of Baekje. The pluralistic and opened country attributes of Baekje that incorporated multiple regional governing groups will be able to be comprehended through understanding various local identity and local cultures of Baekje as suggested before.
There is limitation in examining the local identity of Baekje of 4th~5th century through the location analysis and patternization of tomb distribution areas, where the analysis and patternization are conducted based on material relics found in the limited regions. Nevertheless, this paper tried to understand even part of identity of local societies that remain unclear today, based on an idea that the growth of ancient country, Baekje, was be enabled not only by the central political power but also by the efforts of local societies to establish the relationship actively and the engagement policy and effective ruling of central force of Baekje.
