초록

한국의 줄다리기에 관한 가장 오래된 기록은 『東國輿地勝覽』 「濟州牧」의 기사이다. 이후 『南槎錄』이나 『南槎日錄』, 『耽羅志』 등에서도 관련 기록이 확인된다는 점은 고려와 조선시대를 관통하는 공동체 놀이로 연행되었음을 의미한다. 제주도가 島嶼지역이라는 특징에 더하여 제주 줄다리기의 연행 시기나 형태에서도 ‘서로 모여 즐긴다’는 성격의 축제나 감사제의 한 유형으로 이루어졌을 가능성이 매우 높다. 때문에 한반도 내륙의 여러 지역에 전승되는 줄다리기가 豐農이나 豊漁를 의미하는 占豊祭 성격과는 역사문화적 의미가 다르다.
제주문화의 역사적 전통은 북방문화와 남방문화를 함께 받아들여 이를 절충한 독자적인 문화권을 형성하고 있다. 특히 한국, 일본(오키나와), 대만, 중국을 잇는 동아시아 지중해의 거점이라는 해양문화적 요소는, 제주도가 고대부터 동아시아 지역의 대륙과 해양을 연결하는 문화교류의 교량적 역할을 수행해 왔다는 점에서 더욱 부각된다. 이것은 동아시아와 인접한 캄보디아, 필리핀, 베트남에서도 줄다리기 연희가 행해졌다는 것은 해양을 통한 문화교류 또는 문화전파의 한 갈래로 이해된다는 점에서 한반도 내륙부의 줄다리기 문화와는 또 다른 특수성을 보여준다고 할 수 있겠다. 특히 제주문화는 중세화․근대화 과정에서 중앙과 격리되고 소외되었다는 특성과, 제주도에 유입된 중앙의 문화가 고스란히 남아 있다는 점에서 한국문화의 원형이자 동아시아의 문화허브(Culture-Hub)에 해당한다고 볼 수 있다.
그러므로 제주의 역사문화자원은 구비․전승된 신화를 생활에서 풀어내거나 역사 속에서 분명하게 살아있는 기록을 근거로 재창조할 필요가 있다. 그리고 이것은 제주인과 문화이주민이 서로 나눌 수 있는 문화적 가치로 재편될 가능성이 높다. 이를 가능하게 하는 것은 오래 전부터 제주문화를 형성하여 왔던 원천적인 특질인 문화 개방성으로 이해해도 무방할 것이다.

영어초록

The oldest record of Korea's tug-of-war is found in the article of 「Jejumok」 in 『Shinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam (Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea)』. The fact that the related records are also found in 『Namsarok』, 『Namsailrok』 and 『Tamnaji』 after the first one indicates that the tug-of-war continued as a community sport through the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties. Considering that Jeju Island is an island, Jeju's tug-of-war is very likely to have been enjoyed as a type of festival or thanksgiving event held in a certain time and form with the purpose of 'gathering and enjoying together.' Thus, the historical and cultural meaning of Jeju's tug-of-war is different from that of mainland Korea's tug-of-war, which has been handed down in various regions as a ritual to pray for abundant harvest or abundant fish catch.
The historical tradition of Jeju culture embraced northern culture and southern culture together, and formed a unique culture that compromised both of them. In particular, Jeju Island has functioned as the center of East Asia Mediterranean that connects Korea, Japan (Okinawa), Taiwan and China. This maritime cultural characteristic of Jeju Island is more conspicuous in that Jeju Island has served as a bridge for cultural exchanges that connects the continents and the oceans of East Asia since ancient times. The tug-of-war has been also carried out in Cambodia, Philippines and Vietnam near East Asia, and this is understood as a result of the exchange or propagation of culture across the ocean. This shows another distinctive feature, which is different from that of the tug-of-war culture in the mainland Korea. Moreover, Jeju culture has been separated and isolated from that of mainland Korea during the process of medievalization and modernization, and the culture of mainland Korea introduced into Jeju Island still remains intact in Jeju culture. In this sense, Jeju culture can be regarded as the prototype of Korean culture and the culture-hub of East Asia.
Therefore, as for Jeju's historical and cultural resources, preserved and inherited myths need to be presented in utilized in everyday life, and resources that are clearly seen in history need to be reconstructed based on the records. These are likely to be reorganized into cultural values that Jeju people and cultural immigrants can share, and this will be made possible through cultural openness, which has been a main characteristic of Jeju culture for a long time.
