초록

성리학의 이기론은 자연과 만물의 구조와 작용을 일정한 체계로 설명하기 위해 만들어진 이론이다. 그러나 그 이론의 역할은 ‘설명’에 한정되지 않는다. 유학 혹은 성리학은 ‘내성외왕(內聖外王)’이라는 이상의 실천적 ‘구현’을 그 학문의 목적으로 설정하고 있기 때문이다. 유학·성리학의 모든 이론은 사람들이 이 목표를 현실에서 실현하도록 하기 위해 일사불란하게 기능해야 한다. 그러므로 만일 이론체계의 논리적 정합성이나 내적 완결성을 우선적으로 고려한다면 이기론을 기반으로 한 성리학에서 천(天)이나 천명(天命) 혹은 상제(上帝)와 같은 개념이 있을 자리를 찾기는 쉽지 않다. 이기론(理氣論)은 만물의 생성부터 운동, 변화, 소멸까지 하나의 완결된 체계 속에서 설명해 내는 이론 체계이지만, 초월적 존재로서의 ‘천’은 그 체계 밖에 존재하는 것으로 여겨질 가능성이 크기 때문이다.
그런데 이황은 주자학을 계승하여 ‘리(理)’를 중심으로 한 이기론을 심화시키면서도, 다른 한편으로는 ‘천’(천명, 상제)을 강조했다. 그의 만년 대표작인 「무진육조소(戊辰六條疏)」와 「성학십도(聖學十圖)」는 바로 ‘천’(천명, 상제)에 대한 경외심을 강조하는 것으로 끝을 맺는다. 만일 이황이 하려고만 했다면 ‘천’(천명, 상제)을 이기론 체계 속에 포용해 낼 수도 있었을 것이다. 우주에 도도히 흐르는 생명과 만물의 물리법칙과 도덕규범이 곧 ‘리(理)’이며 그것은 ‘천’의 다른 이름이라고 이황은 이해하고 있었다. 그러나 ‘리’가 대신하지 못하는 ‘천’(천명, 상제)의 역할이 있었다. 그것은 존경과 두려움[敬畏]의 대상이라는 것이다. 이성과 지혜를 넘어선, 혹은 보완해 줄 초월적 존재, 그리고 그에 대한 존경과 두려움은 이기론의 논리적 정합성보다 우선시되는 ‘내성외왕’의 목표가 엄연히 설정되어 있기에 용납될 수 있었다. ‘천’을 중시하는 기호남인 계열의 학풍은 이러한 문제의식으로부터 비롯된다.

영어초록

The ligi theory of Neo-Confucianism is a theory created to explain the operation and structure of nature and all creation with a certain system. However, the function of the theory is not limited to ``explanation`` as Confucianism or Neo-Confucianism has the practical ``materialization`` of the ideal of ``inner sage and outer sovereign`` as its academic purpose. Every theory of Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism must function within a perfect order, in order for humanity to realize the purpose in reality. Therefore, if logical conformity of a theoretical system, or internal completeness, is considered a priority, it is not easy to find a place for Heaven (the Mandate of Heaven, the Lord on High) in Neo-Confucianism based on ligi theory. Ligi theory is a theoretical system which explains creation, movement, mutation, and termination of all creation within one complete system. But Heaven as the transcendental being is very likely to be considered as existing outside such system as the concept of Heaven can hamper the conformity of the system of ligi theory in discussions based on ligi theory. Yi Hwang emphasized the role of li so eagerly as to suggest propositions such as ``li issues,`` ``li moves`` and ``li approaches by itself`` and deepened the idea of ligi theory, the core of which is li. However, he still stressed the importance of Heaven as a transcendental being. "Six Section Memorial of 1568" and "The Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning", the laborious works of Yi Hwang, conclude themselves by emphasizing awe of Heaven (the Mandate of Heaven, the Lord on High). If Yi Hwang had so wanted, he could have included Heaven in the system of ligi theory. The force of life that proudly flows through the universe and the laws of physics and the ethical standards applicable to all creation are li, and li is another name for Heaven, as Yi Hwang understood. However, there is the role of Heaven that cannot be replaced by that of li in that the role of Heaven is subject to respect and awe. The transcendental being that rises above or complements reasoning and wisdom, and respect and awe toward it, can be accepted, because the aim of ``inner sage and outer sovereign,`` which has priority over rational conformity of ligi theory, is undeniably established. Academic traditions of Giho-namin that values Heaven originates from such a motivation.
