리움(Leeum) 삼성미술관의 전시를 통해서 본 한국적 정체성 (A Study of Korean Identities through the Exhibitions of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art)

초록

본 연구는 뮤지엄과 전시를 통해서 한국적 정체성이 어떻게 형성되는가를 질문하며, 리움 삼성미술관의 전통 한국미술 관련 전시들을 연구한다.
뮤지엄과 전시를 통해서 담론화되고 가시화되는 ‘한국적 정체성’은 ‘종족성’과 ‘정체성’이 결합된 논의로 접근할 수 있다. ‘한국적’이라는 뜻은 한국이라는 국가, 민족, 지역, 언어 등의 분류기준일 뿐 아니라 그 안에 성별, 세대, 계층, 하위집단 등의 다양한 층위를 품고 있는 개념이다. 이는 기존의 생물학적, 시원적, 규정적인 종족성보다는, 문화적, 현재적, 구성적인 종족성으로 논의되어야 한다. 정체성도 기존의 본질적, 고정적, 정태적, 이상적인 접근으로부터 상황적, 유동적, 동태적, 현실적인 접근으로의 전환이 요구된다.
한국미에 대해서는 일제강점기에 시작되어 오늘날까지 ‘소박미,’ ‘자연미,’ ‘무기교의기교’와 같은 담론으로 지배적으로 이어졌는데, 이러한 수렴과정에서 담론의 경합여부와, 그에 대한 이유를 묻게 된다. 리움의 수집, 소장, 건축, 운영, 전시 면에서의 역사와특징은 ‘리움의 정체성’과 더불어 ‘리움이 만들어내는 한국적 정체성’을 가늠하게 한다.
전통과 현재, 미래가 조우하고, 한국의 고전미술과 국내외의 현대미술이 공존하는 장이라는 점은 리움의 가장 두드러진 정체성이다. 첨단 기술로 최고의 제품을 생산한다는모기업 삼성의 이미지와 당대 최고의 명품을 소장하고 전시하는 리움의 이미지는 중첩된다. 리움이 제공하는 절제하며 귀족적인 한국적 정체성은 자유분방하고 대중적인 이미지와는 거리가 있다.
≪세밀가귀: 한국미술의 품격≫전은 삼성미술관들의 전통미술 전시들을 반복, 강화, 총망라한 전시이다. 이 전시는 기존의 한국미에 대한 반대담론이자 대안담론으로서 세밀함, 화려함, 공교함을 주장한다. 이처럼 리움이 사례는 한국적 정체성이 특정한 뮤지엄과 전시의 정체성이 뒤엉켜 있는 경합과정임을 재고하게 한다.

영어초록

This study tackles how Korean identities have been formed through a museum and its exhibitions. The case study of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art and its exhibitions on Korean traditional art support the following.
The notion of ‘Korean identity,’ which becomes ideologized and visualized through museums and exhibitions, can be approached in a combined perspective of both ‘ethnicity’ and ‘identity.’ The term ‘Korean’ is not only categorized under the criteria of the nation, nationality, region, and language, but also is classified under the various strata of gender, generation, class, and subculture. Korean ethnicity should not be implied as a biological, deterministic, and origin-related notion, but rather a cultural, constitutive, and time-condensed one. Likewise, identities should be considered with a situational, fluid, dynamic, and realistic approach rather than the essential, fixed, static and idealistic one. The discourse of Korean beauty has been invariably continued starting from the period of Japanese occupation until present time. Korean beauty has been dominantly classified as simple, natural, and artless art. Beneath the process of converging these definitions, there might have been constant clashes of discourses.
The identities of Leeum as well as the Korean identities constructed by Leeum have been carved by the histories and features of Leeum collection, architecture, management and exhibitions. The outstanding identity of Leeum is the coexistence of past, present and future, the encounter of Korean traditional art and global modern/contemporary art. Also, the identity of Leeum is overlapped with the image of its parent company Samsung which is willing to produce refined high-end products with cutting edge technology. Finally, the Korean beauty presented by Leeum is refined, restrained and aristocratic, distancing itself from the liberal and popular image. The exhibition of Exquisite and Precious: The Splendor of Korean Art(2015) is the encompassing result of Korean traditional art exhibitions of Samsung museums. As a counter and an alternative discourse to the dominant view that Korean beauty is plain and sheer, it pursues luxurious, elaborate, and detailed value.
Consequently, the study of Leeum shows that the museum and its exhibitions are not simply neutral, ideal, and public devices, but rather a partial, actual, and private battlefield of identities. Korean identities are intertwined in the contesting process of the discourse and representation stemmed from the museum’s exhibitions.
