1920년 봉오동전투와 청산리독립전쟁의 주요 쟁점 검토 (A Review of the Issue on the Battle of Fengwudong and the Independence Movement Warfare of Qingshanli in 1920)

초록

1920년 6월의 봉오동전투와 10월의 청산리독립전쟁(일명 청산리전투, 청산리전역 [warfare])은 한민족 독립운동사에서 가장 자랑스러운 ‘독립전쟁’으로 평가되고 있다. 특히 중국 연변지역(북간도)에서 벌어진 청산리전투는 일본 정규군을 상대로 벌인 가장 규모가 크고 치열한 독립전쟁이었다. 그러나 이에 대한 객관적 평가도 필요하다.
주요쟁점인 전과에 대해 검토하면 봉오동전투 관련 일본군 사령부 발표와 일본영사관 경 찰 보고의 경우 일본군 십수명 사상, 또 청산리독립전쟁 관련 기록에서도 일본군 관련 기록 을 보면 최소한 74명 이상 살상 등으로 보고되었다. 독립군 주체기록인 「홍범도(洪範圖)일 지」와 여러 일본군 공식 기록을 검토하면 이견이 있지만, 봉오동전투에서는 독립군이 일본 군 120여명을 살상하고, 청산리독립전쟁에서는 독립군이 일본군 600여명 가량을 살상하는 큰 승리를 거둔 것으로 종합된다. 이 가운데는 일본군 스스로의 오인으로 서로 싸운 결과 입 은 피해도 적지 않은 것으로 판단된다.
봉오동전투나 청산리독립전쟁 연구와 관련하여 「홍범도일지」와 일본군 공식 보고서인 「봉 오동전투 상보(詳報)」, 간도출병사(間島出兵史), 각종 전보, 영사관의 보고기록 등 관련 자료들에 대한 비교검토 작업도 절실한 실정이다. 검토결과 홍범도일지나 일본군 공식 기록 모두 비판적 관점에서 검토할 필요가 있다는 사실을 확인하였다.
‘청산리전투’나 ‘청산리대첩’은 일반 국민들이 1회성 전투인 것으로 알거나, 또는 군사적 측면만 주목하여 독립군이 대승을 거둔 싸움으로만 인식하고 평가하기 쉽다. 따라서 이러한 문제점을 극복하기 위해서는 전후 맥락과 국내외적 파급효과 등을 고려하여 ‘청산리독립전 쟁’이란 용어를 정착시킬 필요가 있다. 또한 청산리독립전쟁의 단순한 전과보다는 일본 정 규군과의 대결과 그 파급, 향후 영향을 중시해야 한다고 본다.

영어초록

The Battle of Fengwudong(鳳梧洞) in June 1920 and the Independence Movement Warfare of Qingshanli(靑山里) in October 1920 are some of the proudest battles for independence in Korean history. The Battle of Qingshanli, in particular, was the biggest and fiercest warfare of the independence movement against the official Japanese military. As a result of reviewing the Diary of Hong Beom-do, the records of the independence army leaders, and various materials from the Japanese military, it was determined that the Korean Independence Army had great victories by having 120 casualties of Japanese soldiers at the Battle of Fengwudong and about 600 at the Independence Warfare of Qingshanli.
The Diary of Hong Beom-do, as reviewed in this study, is based on the verbal testimony of Hong Beom-do, his written records, and student notes. It is necessary to fully utilize Lee In-seop's manuscript of the Diary of Hong Beom-do, along with Lee Ham-deok's manuscript, as an important archive in order to study the Battle of Fengwudong, the Qingshanli Independence Movement Warfare, and any research related to Hong Beom-do. In addition, it is urgent to initiate research related to the Battle of Fengwudong and the Warfare of Qingshanli Independence Movement by comparing and reviewing various telegraphs, archives, and reports by the Consulate, such as the Diary of Hong Beom-do, the Detailed Report of the Battle of Fengwudong(an official report by the Japanese military), and the History of Military Expedition of Jiandao(Gando). As a result of the personal review by the author of this paper, it turns out that it is necessary to review the Diary of Hong Beom-do and the official archive of the Japanese military in a critical context.
It is often wrongly assumed among the public that the Battle of Qingshanli happened only once, and that the independence army overwhelmingly won the battle. But that involves only paying attention to the military perspective. To overcome this issue, one needs to firmly establish the term ‘Qingshanli Independence Movement Warfare’ by taking into account the historical context and the impact it had in Korea and overseas. Also, one needs to put more value upon the conflict against the Japanese military and its extent and future impact rather than the simple achievements from the Qingshanli Independence Movement Warfare.
Around the time of the Qingshanli Independence Movement Warfare, the Japanese military and police enagaged in a campaign of slaughter, violence, and suppression while invading Jiandao(Gando) and China’s South Manchuria. Historians call it the Gando Massacre, or Gyeongshin(庚申) Massacre. However, there hasn’t been a systematic investigation into such an important historical event including the Independence Movement Warfare of Qingshanli. In the future, there should be an objective review with research using various materials and possible requests for further investigation, as well as an apology, compensation, and indemnification from Japan.
