나주 신촌리 금동관의 불교적 상징과 마한사회 (Naju Sinchonri gilt bronze crown:Buddhist symbols and Mahan society)

초록

이 논문은 신촌리 금동관의 불교적 조형에 대한 해석을 시도하고, 백제와 마한의 정치적 관계를 고려하여 그 의미를 마한사회의 정체성과 연결하여 보았다. 마한사회 특유의 대형 옹관묘에서 출토된 신촌리 금동관은 불교 상징인 연꽃이 어떠한 질서에 의해 독특하게 표현되어 있다. 마한은 백제에 일시에 정복되지 않고 점차적으로 해체되었으며, 특히 신촌리 금동관이 출토된 옹관의 제작시기에 해당하는 5세기 후반부터 6세기 초반까지는 백제 규율 아래 마한 후기 세력으로 지탱하였다.
신촌리 금동관은 불교문양으로 전개되는 백제 금동관의 경계에 있으면서도 백제 금동관 전통에서 이질적인 불교 모티프가 이른 시기에 시도된 독창적인 조형이다. 신촌리 금동관의 불교 모티프는 대관의 팔메트연화문, 3개 모둠의 연꽃, 그리고 관모의 12개 연꽃으로 주로 연꽃과 상징 수의 관점에서 살펴진다. 대승불교에서는 모든 영혼(새로운 삶)이 연꽃을 통해 화생한다. 불교모티프를 통해 신촌리 금동관은 정토왕생에 대한 바람을 담은 장례용으로 추정된다.
신촌리 금동관이 마한에서 제작된 것으로 보면 백제와 정치적 상하관계인 마한사회의 수장이 불교모티프의 독특한 금동관을 쓰고 그들 고유의 옹관묘 안에 안장되었다는 점은 고대 사회의 중요한 변화를 상기시킨다. 즉 고대국가를 이루지 못한 마한은 백제화되었고 필연적으로 그 문화적인 정체성은 잠재의식 속으로 함장(含藏)되었다. 따라서 신촌리 금동관은 마한사회의 힘을 보여주는 매우 이른 시기 불교적인 독창적 조형이자 백제 금동관 흐름의 징후이고 후기 마한사회의 백제화를 상기시키는 매우 중요한 유산 중 하나이다.

영어초록

The Sinchonri gilt bronze crown was excavated from a large pottery tomb which was a signature of Mahan society. Buddhist symbols such as lotus flowers and Palmette patterns were uniquely organized in a certain order. The motif of the gilt bronze crown was considered to be related to a wish for Buddhist Pure Land for the dead who was a Buddhist. Although Mahan was conquered by Baekje, the breakdown of Mahan society proceeded gradually. The excavated gilt bronze crown was considered to be manufactured during the late fifth century and the early 6th century. During this period, post Mahan forces were maintained. This study investigates the signs of Buddhist culture, the relationship between Baekje and Mahan, and the identity of Mahan society in the formative evaluation of Sinchonri gilt bronze crown which may provide a window onto ancient society.
It is likely that the Sinchonri gilt bronze crown sketches were drawn and was casted by Mahan forces. The crown’s palmette-lotus patterns are rigid, which was attempted relatively early period. The three lotus flowers reminded Buddha Samjon (triad). The 12 lotus flowers on the crown might represent the Buddhist concept of 12 dependent arising principles. Lotus flowers have a great influence for long time in many cultures. In Mahayana Buddhism, every soul (new life) revives through a lotus flower. The rebirth through lotus flowers was tightly related to the concept of Western Paradise Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha. The gilt bronze crown with Buddhist motif was foreign to Baekje tradition, but it was considered within the boundaries of the Baekje gilt bronze crown after the 6th century.
The dead in the large pottery tomb who was heading up Mahan would be in a superior-subordinate relationship with Baekje. Buried in a large pottery tomb (Mahan specific) with a Gilt bronze crown with Buddhist motifs (foreign to Baekje), the dead would have practiced Buddhism, maintaining Mahan identity without having a status of Baekje nobility. Nevertheless, Mahan inevitably marginalized in the development of Buddhist art and its cultural identity disappeared/integrated into Baekje’s culture. Hence, the crown is an important legacy of Mahan, demonstrating its power through Buddhist motif in its early era. It also represents an important piece in the stream of Baekje’s tradition of gilt bronze crown. It further shows the existence of post Mahan forces and enforced aspects of assimilation.
