금동신발로 본 복암리 세력과 주변지역의 동향 (Tendency of power in Bokam-ri and surrounding area seen from the excavation of gilt-bronze shoes)

초록

백제시대 고분출토품 중 위세품으로서 가장 뛰어난 것은 금동관과 금동신발이다. 금동관이 생전의 권위를 나타내는 것이라면 금동신발은 死者에게 보내는 가장 중요한 장송의례품이라 할 것이다. 또한 백제 중앙에서만 제작할 수 있었고 백제의 중요 거점지역이라 할 만한 곳에서 대부분 나타난다.
최근에 나주 복암리 정촌고분에서 금동신발과 함께 환두대도, 이식등 중요유물들이 출토되었다.
백제 금동신발은 최근까지 약 20점이 발견되었는데 대체로 백제 전 지역에서 골고루 출토되고 있으며 그 형식 또한 일정한 계통을 이루고 있다. 그리고 금동신발의 장식적 변화나 제작기법 등의 계통성으로 볼 때 4세기∼5세기대 백제 전지역에서 출토되는 금동신발은 모두 중앙에서 제작해서 지방에 사여한 것이다.
영산강유역 일대는 5세기 중엽부터 다시면 복암리와 반남면 신촌리 세력에 의해 주도되었던 것을 알 수 있다. 정촌고분 출토 금동신발은 복암리를 중심으로 한 영산강유역의 정치세력이 5세기 중엽 백제 중앙과의 관계 속에서 지역 세력의 중심으로 자리 잡게 된 것을 말해주는 것이다.
5세기 후반 백제 중앙의 혼란과 지역장악력이 느슨해 졌을 때 영산강유역의 군소세력들이 활발한 세력확장이 있었을 것으로 생각되나 기존의 복암리세력을 대신하여 그 중에서도 금동관과 금동신발을 사여받게 되는 신촌리세력이 백제 중앙과 깊은 관계를 형성하게 되는 것으로 추정된다.
그러나 6세기 전반에 들어서면서 다시 복암리세력에게 금동신발과 함께 많은 위세품이 집중적으로 사여되었다. 이것은 영산강유역에서 꾸준히 세력을 키워온 복암리집단이 튼튼한 기반을 배경으로 이 지역에서 다시 배타적 우위성을 확보하게 되고 백제도 기존의 옹관분 사회를 와해하면서 일찍부터 관계를 맺었던 친백제적인 집단을 아우르면서 영산강유역에 대한 지배력을 확대하게 된 것이다.
백제는 금동신발과 같은 최고 위세품을 영산강유역의 정촌과 복암리, 신촌리세력의 수장들에게 제공하면서 중앙의 왕실과 귀족으로 편입시켰던 것으로 생각되며, 특히 담로의 長에 임명하는 방법 등을 통해 거점지역을 장악하여 통치하였던 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

The most outstanding articles excavated from ancient tombs of Baekje era include gilt-bronze crown and gilt-bronze copper shoes. It can be said that the gilt-bronze crown represents the authority during lifetime, while the gilt-bronze shoes are the most important funeral courtesy article for the dead. In addition, they could be produced by the central government of Baekje only, and most of them were found at places that may be called the important areas of Baekje.
Recently, the important relics such as sword with ring pommel, or ear rings, etc. were unearthed along with gilt-bronze shoes at Jeongchon ancient tomb at Bokam-ri in Naju.
Until recent times, about 20 pieces of the gilt-bronze shoes of Baekje have been discovered and they are unearthed throughout the entire area of Baekje, and they are showing certain forms. And judging from decorative changes or production techniques of the gilt-bronze shoes, all the gilt-bronze shoes unearthed throughout the entire area of Baekje in the 4th~5thcenturies were produced by the central government of Baekje and granted to the localareas.
The excavation of new relics in the Yeongsangang River area shows that the people who lived Dashi-myeon Bokam-ri and Bannam-myeon Shinchon-ri had dominated the area from the middle of 5thcentury. The gilt-bronze shoes unearthed from the ancient tomb at Jeongchon indicates that the political power located around Yeongsangang river, centering on Bokam-ri got the upperhand in the relationship with the central government of Baekje around the middle of 5th century.
The small powers in the basin of Yeongsangang river may have expanded their powers when the central government of Baekje became weak in the latter half of 5thcentury and its grip became loosened. Particularly, it is presumed that the people living in Shinchon-ri who had the gilt-bronze crowns and the gilt-bronze shoes became dominant in their relation with the central government of ancient Baekje, replacing the strong people living in Bokam-ri power at that time.
However, upon entering the first half of 6thcentury, many prestige goods along with gilt-bronze shoes were granted again intensively to the people living in Bokam-ri. This suggests that the Bokam-ri group steadily grew their power around Yeongsangang river area and became to secure the superiority over other regions again with a strong political power as the background. The central government of Baekje also could expand the governing power over the Yeongsangang river area by harmonizing with the pro-central government group which had a relationship from early stages, thus replacing the people who developed the culture of earthenware coffin tomb.
It is likely that the central government of Baekje tried to subdue the local oligarchies lived in Jengchon, Bokam-ri, and Shinchon-ri to the power of the central government and induce them to become the royal families of the Baekje by providing them with best prestige goods such as gilt-bronze shoes and particularly appointing them as the head of Damro.
