진안 도통리 청자가마터의 보존과 활용 (Preservation and utilization of the celadon kiln site in Dotong-ri, Jinan)

초록

과거 도자기 전문생산 시설이었던 가마터는 당시의 도자기 생산기술에 대한 각종 정보와 그와 관련된 사회상, 생산에 적합한 지형지세의 이용 상황, 원료의 공급체계, 생산품의 공급 규모, 당시 도자기를 둘러싼 사회 경제 형태, 대내외 기술, 문화교류의 상황 등에 대한 많은 정보를 제공하는 중요한 문화유적으로 다양한 콘텐츠를 보유하고 있다. 최근 발굴 조사된 진안 도통리 가마터는 다량의 갑발과 요벽․벽돌․옥벽저완 자기편 등 초기청자와 관련되는 고고자료가 출토되어 한국 청자문화의 발전과정을 살피는데 있어 매우 중요한 유적으로 평가되고 있다. 따라서 유적의 활용 방안에 따라 역사교육 자료로써 뿐만 아니라 현대인의 문화공간으로서 활용도 높아질 수 있을 것으로 평가되므로 진안 도통리 청자 가마터에 대한 보존과 활용문제에 대한 다양한 논의가 필요하다.
지금까지 도요지의 보존방법은 발굴조사 결과로 드러난 가마터의 현장보존과 도요지의 역사자료를 간략하게 설명하는 작은 전시관 성격의 박물관을 건립하는 정도로 진행되어왔다. 그 외에 생산품을 재현하는 생산시설을 구축하여 지역의 특산품이나 문화상품으로 활용하거나 지역의 역사문화 이미지 구축에도 일익을 담당하는 정도이었다. 하지만, 앞으로는 단순한 도자기 연구자료를 제공하는 역사유적으로서 단지 현장 보존에만 국한된 유적보존의 단계에서 벗어나 지역의 경제발전을 선도하는 동력으로써 활용될 뿐만 아니라 지역의 미래 환경, 미래문화 성격을 만들어 가는 하나의 문화자원으로 크게 인식되어야 한다. 이를 위해서 우선적으로 도통리 청자 가마터의 실체 규명을 위한 전반적인 발굴조사를 추가로 진행할 필요성이 있으며, 이를 통한 학제적 조사와 연구를 진행하고 가마터의 성격을 명확하게 규명한다면 향후 정비와 복원에 대한 방향성이 분명해질 수 있다. 또한 강제적인 보존이나 활용보다는 지역주민의 적극적이고 자발적인 참여를 바탕으로 한 가마터의 정비가 이루어져야 하며, 이와 함께 마을의 자연환경과 문화경관을 복원하고 청자마을로 가꾸어 고려시대 초기청자 공방시설의 체험을 위한 테마파크로 발전시키는 방안이 마련되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Ancient celadon kiln sites are important sites that can provide us with a great deal of information about the period concerned, including the ceramic production skills, how people used topography to produce the celadon, the ways in which raw materials and completed goods were supplied to those who needed them, the social economy related to the production of ceramic wares, the ceramic production skills developed in Korea and overseas, and how cultures and ideas were exchanged between the Korean Peninsula and other countries.
The celadon kiln site in Dotong-ri, Jinan, which has recently been surveyed and excavated, is thought to be a very important historic site for research on the process of development of celadon culture in Korea. A large number of archaeological materials related to celadon objects of early periods, such as gapbal(clay firing boxes used in the production of white porcelain), kiln walls and bricks, celadon bowls with a doughnut-shaped foot, and ceramic fragments, have been unearthed from it. It is expected that the site can be used for cultural activities as well as a material for history education. As such, it is necessary to discuss how the site should be preserved and utilized in the future.
Those concerned have discussed the possibility of establishing a museum complete with a small exhibition room to display historic materials associated with the site and to carry out the work of preserving the site unearthed by the survey. They also discussed the establishment of a facility for producing replicas of local specialties in an effort to publicize the area as a historic site of ceramic kilns.
However, efforts should now be made to exploit the historic sites both as a major resource and engine of local economic development and as the basis for fostering a future environment conducive to regional cultural development, rather than being content with merely preserving them as historic sites. To that end, it is necessary to carry out comprehensive excavation surveys of the sites in order to set a direction for their repair and restoration based on a clear-cut definition of their nature and characteristics.
A site such as this one needs to be restored with the positive and voluntary participation of the local community. Consideration also needs to be given to restoring the village's natural environment and to improving the areas surrounding the site. Therefore, it is recommended that the village be developed into a "celadon village" equipped with a theme park that provides visitors with a "hands-on" experience of celadon workshops of the Goryeo Period.
