초록

아퀴나스나 주희는 존재의 이유가 존재보다 앞선다고 하는 중세의 사유방식을 대변하고 있다. 그래서 우주의 근원으로 여겨지는 천주나 리는 모두 목적인이라고 할 수 있다. 그들은 모두 도덕적 자기완성을 인간의 중요한 목적으로 삼았다. 그런데 그 목적을 실현하는 힘이 어디서 오느냐에 따라서 천주와 리가 달라진다. 능동인은 그 문제에 대한 답이라고 봐야 한다. 그리스도교 신학의 창조론과 도덕에서의 은총론을 결정짓는 것은 능동인이다. 마테오 리치의 천주는 이념으로 통치할 뿐 아니라 개별 현상에 직접 개입함으로 통치한다. 그처럼 능동인이 사물 밖의 초월자에게 주었기 때문에, 천주는 기본적으로 초월자다. 초월자이지만, 형상인으로 또는 능력으로 내재한다. 반면에 성리학에서 리는 보편적 표준으로 초월적이지만, 각구일극(各具一極)으로 내재해 있으며, 능동인은 리의 몫이 아니라 기의 몫이다. 그래서 리는 이념으로 또는 천명으로 통치할 뿐이며, 인간의 마음을 움직이는 존재론적 실체가 아니다. 천주는 목적이지만 목표가 될 수 없다면, 성리학의 리는 성인관(聖人觀)에 기초해서 목적이자 목표가 된다.

영어초록

Matteo Ricci's T'ien-chu Shih-I (天主實義) is well known for its historical value regarding the encounter of Eastern and Western cultures. Its tremendous effect on Korean society in the epoch of Cho Seon Dynasty has prompted many Korean scholars to question the philosophical and theological essence of Matteo Ricci's apology to Christianity. This study is in line with those previous works on the possible comparison of the Western God and the Confucian principle known as the Great Ultimate: (太極) or Li: (理). What is especially of interest to this study is that the position of the efficient cause in its relation with the final cause may explain definitely the difference of the Christian God and Neo-Confucian Li. Following Aquinas, Matteo Ricci regards the Christian God as both the final cause and the efficient cause of myriad things of this world, while Li cannot be the efficient cause at all. Li is possibly the final cause as the ultimate standard, but the efficient cause must be attributed to Ki: (氣, the material force) in the Neo-Confucian philosophical system. This seemingly cosmological difference between God and Li leads us to examine the moral foundation of both metaphysics. The fact that the Christian God works as both the final cause and the efficient cause means that God is the ultimate goal of moral self-accomplishment of human beings and, at the same time, He moves us toward the goal. It is God who causes and leads the achievement of moral goodness. On the contrary, the famous debate on the issue of whether Li is active or not among Korean Neo-Confucian scholars reflects the fact that moral initiative in the Neo-Confucian system cannot be found anywhere else than in the human mind. Li rules only as a moral ideal, while the Christian God rules as an ideal and by direct involvement in moral accomplishment. This difference of transcendence of Li and God is linked to the immanent character of both, and, ultimately, to the different anthropology regarding moral capability of human beings in Christian and Neo-Confucian culture.
