무령왕릉 미확인 출토 유물에 대한 음악학적 접근 -현악기 존재 여부에 관한 고찰- (A Musicological Approach to Unidentified Artifacts from the Tomb of King Muryeong -Consideration on the Existence of String Instruments-)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 1971년 발견된 무령왕릉 내부에 거문고 관련 유물의 존재 여부를 두고 벌인 학계의논쟁을 음악학적 관점에 검토해보는 데 있다. 이러한 쟁점은 최초 무령왕릉의 발굴단장인 김원룡의 무령왕릉발굴보고서 의 기록에서 비롯되었다. 김원룡은 보고서에서 육각형과 장방형의 유물인 ‘흑칠은금구’를거문고의 잔해라고 주장했다. 하지만 현재 이 유물은 금속 장식이 악기의 울림에 지장을 줄 수 있다는학자들의 견해를 토대로 무령왕 목관 마구리 장식으로 복원된 상태이다. 그러나 의물의 형태로 제작했다고가정한다면 금속공예가 발달한 백제시대에 금속으로 장식한 악기가 존재할 수 있다. 그리고 장방형 ‘흑칠은금구’와 같은 장식이 부착된 철금식(鐵琴式) 악기가 중국에도 존재하므로 ‘흑칠은금구’가 거문고의 잔해일수 있다는 견해를 밝혔다.
한편, 왕릉 안 진묘수 바로 뒤의 제대(祭臺)가 있는 곳에서는 삼나무와 목기구가 발견되었다. 그런데이 구역은 거문고의 잔해로 추정하는 장방형의 장식이 발견된 곳이다. 삼나무는 원래 목관의 일부라고예측했다. 그러나 무령왕의 목관 재료인 금송이랑 다르고 얇으므로 현재에는 중문의 문짝으로 추정하고있다. 하지만 거문고의 잔해가 있다고 추정하는 구역과 맞닿아 있으므로 이를 관의 목재라 가정하고 분석해본다면 금갑(琴匣)과 관련지을 수 있다. 특히, 정창원에 보관된 신라금의 금갑 재료가 삼나무인 점에 주목할필요가 있다. 왕릉 내부의 삼나무를 원래 관의 재질로 추정했던 용도로 해석해 본다면 금갑의 재료일 수있다. 더불어 현재 문짝의 부속품이라 추정하고 있는 목기(木器)도 정확한 용도를 밝히지 못하고 있다.
구멍의 지름이 3~4cm로 부식이 심하여 현재에는 원뿔형의 모양으로 발견되었는데 요고의 형태를 띤 의물이 아닌지 음악학적인 조사가 필요해 보인다. 앞으로도 무령왕릉 출토 유물에 관한 음악학계의 연구가지속되어 백제 음악사와 연관된 다양한 의문이 밝혀지기를 기대해 본다.

영어초록

The aim of this study is to examine from a musicological perspective the scholarly debate regarding the existence of artifacts related to the Geomungo (a traditional Korean stringed instrument) found inside the tomb of King Muryeong, discovered in 1971. This issue originates from the records in Kim Won-ryong's “Excavation Report of the Tomb of King Muryeong.” Kim claimed that the hexagonal and rectangular artifacts, referred to as ‘Heukchileungeumgu’ were remnants of a Geomungo. However, based on scholars' opinions that metal decorations could interfere with the sound of an instrument, these artifacts are currently restored as decorations for King Muryeong's wooden coffin end-caps. Nonetheless, if we assume these were made as ritual objects, it is possible that instruments decorated with metal existed in Baekje, known for its advanced metalwork. It has also been noted that metal-decorated iron zither-like instruments with decorations similar to the ‘Heukchileungeumgu existed in China, hence the possibility that these could be remnants of a geomungo.
Furthermore, behind the royal tomb's main burial chamber, a platform was found along with cypress wood and wooden utensils. This area is where the rectangular decorations presumed to be Geomungo remnants were discovered. Initially, the cypress wood was thought to be a part of the wooden coffin, but since it differs from the thick juniper wood used for King Muryeong's coffin and is thinner, it is now presumed to be a part of the gate's door. However, considering its proximity to the area where Geomungo remnants are assumed to be, if we assume the wood was part of the coffin and analyze it, it could be related to the qin case (instrument case). It is particularly noteworthy that the material of the qin case of a Silla gold artifact stored in Jeongchangwon is made of cypress. If we reinterpret the cypress wood found inside the royal tomb as having been originally intended for the coffin, it could be the material of the qin case. Moreover, the purpose of the wooden utensil, currently presumed to be a door fitting, is not clearly identified. With a hole diameter of 3-4cm and severe corrosion, it was found in a cone-like shape, and a musicological investigation is necessary to determine if it could be a ritual object shaped like a Yogo (a bell-shaped artifact). Further musicological research on the artifacts excavated from the Tomb of King Muryeong is anticipated to shed light on various questions related to the history of Baekje music.
