조선 태조 이성계의 4대조 ‘북도팔릉’ 연구 (A Study on Bukdopalreung (Eight Royal Tombs in North Korea) for the Four Generations of Ancestors of King Taejo during the Joseon Dynasty)

초록

조선 왕릉은 조선을 다스린 국왕과 왕후 및 추존 국왕과 왕후의 무덤이다. 2009년 유네스코 세계문화유산에 조선 왕릉 40기가 등재되었다. 그러나 그중 북한에 위치한 왕릉 10기는 제외되었는데, 이 글은 북한에 있는 태조 이성계의 4대조 무덤인 ‘북도팔릉’을 연구하였다.
1392년 조선을 건국한 태조 이성계가 왕이 된 10일 뒤 자신의 4대 조부모를 왕과 왕후로 추존하였고, 20일 뒤 그들의 무덤에 능호를 올렸다. 이후 1398년부터 1416년까지 조선 왕실에서는 함경도와 강원도 등지에 위치한 8기의 무덤을 왕릉으로 추봉하였고, 이것이 ‘북도팔릉’이다.
이것은 고려나 송 및 명의 영향을 받은 것이다. 창업군주인 제1대 황제는 공통적으로 자신의 조상들을 황제로 추존하고 그들의 무덤을 황제릉으로 조성하였다. 그것은 건국의 정당성과 왕위 계승의 정통성을 시각화하려는 의도가 반영된 것이다. 이에 조선의 왕릉을 전자의 것들과 비교한 결과 조선만의 독자성을 엿볼 수 있었다.
우선 조선의 북도팔릉은 무덤의 숫자에서 다른 나라와 큰 차이를 보였다. 고려나 송은 태조의 부모를 합장하여 昌陵이나 永安陵 1기씩에 모셨고, 명은 태조의 부모를 모신 皇陵과 3대 조상은 함께 모신 祖陵 2기에 불과하였다. 그러나 조선의 북도팔릉은 왕 뿐 아니라 왕후에게도 별도의 왕릉을 조성해 주었는데, 이것은 고려 왕릉의 전통을 계승한 조선 왕릉만의 특징을 갖고 있어 주목된다. 따라서 향후 북도팔릉이 조선왕릉과 마찬가지로 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재되길 기대해 본다.

영어초록

Royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty refer to graves for kings and queens who ruled the Joseon Dynasty in addition to posthumous kings and queens. 40 royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty were registered with UNESCO World Heritage in 2009. Of them, 10 royal tombs located in North Korea were excluded. This study is focused on examining Bukdopalleung, the eight royal tombs for ancestors of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty in North Korea.
10 days after King Taejo Lee Seong-gye founded the Joseon Dynasty in 1392, he honored the four generations of his ancestors as posthumous kings and queens and designated them as royal tombs in 20 days. From 1398 to 1416, the Joseon Dynasty designated eight graves located in Hamgyeong-do and Gangwon-do as royal tombs, and it is known as Bukdopalreung.
It was influenced by the Goryeo Dynasty, the Song Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty. It was customary for the first emperor who founded a kingdom to honor his ancestors and build royal tombs for them. It aims to visualize legitimacy of foundation of a kingdom and succession to the throne. However, compared to precedents, the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty had originality.
More than anything else, there was a great difference in the number of tombs. The Joseon Dynasty built separate royal tombs for the four generations of ancestors of King Taejo, and the number of the tombs was eight. On the other hand, the Goryeo Dynasty and the Song Dynasty built Changreung or Yongan Ling, one royal tomb where parents of King Taejo (the founder of the dynasty) were buried together.
The Ming Dynasty built only one imperial tomb for parents of the King Taejo and two tombs of the three generations of ancestors of the emperor. In particular, Bukdopalreung of the Joseon Dynasty was intRoyal tombs of the ended to uphold the tradition of the Goryeo Dynasty that built a separate royal tomb not only for a king but also for a queen. Stone sculptures in Bukdopalreung reflected styles of the late Goryeo Dynasty and the early Joseon Dynasty. Accordingly, it is hoped that they will be registered with UNESCO World Heritage as well.
