사비기 백제 왕릉의 새로운 인식-익산 쌍릉(대왕릉)을 중심으로- (New Awareness of the Royal Tombs during the Sabi Period of Baekje - With a Focus on the Twin Royal Tombs (Tomb of the Great King) in Iksan -)

초록

일제강점기 일제는 식민지 통치를 합리화하기 위해 우리나라 전국에 산재한 수 많은 유적을 파 헤쳤다.
100년이라는 한 세기가 흐른 지금, 당시 조사되었던 많은 유적들이 우리나라 학자들의 손을 거치면서 새로운사실들이 밝혀지고 있는데 익산 쌍릉은 그 대표적인 사례의 하나이다.
익산 쌍릉은 오금산(해발 180m) 서쪽 능선 말단부 낮은 구릉에 2개(대왕릉·소왕릉)의 원형분이 남-북 방향으로 180m 떨어져 나란하게 자리하고 있다. 2017년 대왕릉의 재조사를 통해 백제 사비기 왕릉의 구조에대한 새로운 자료와 함께 일제 강점기 조사 후 관대 위에 놓은 목함(木函) 내부에서 한 사람 개체분의 유골이수습되었다. 유골의 자연과학적인 분석 결과 고령의 남성으로 확인되었으며, 연대측정결과 백제 제30대 무왕에 가깝다는 결과도 발표되었다.
본 논문은 쌍릉과 관련한 문헌자료 및 일제강점기 발굴조사 자료의 검토와 최근 이루어진 대왕릉의 발굴조사에서 확인된 정보의 검토를 통해 익산 쌍릉의 성격을 새롭게 조명하였다. 문헌자료 검토 결과, 과거 쌍릉은‘마한의 시조’ 혹은 ‘백제 무왕’의 무덤으로 인식되었으며, 일제강점기인 1917년 조사 후에 비로소 백제 사비기왕릉급 무덤으로 인식의 전환이 이루어졌음을 확인하였다.
2017년 대왕릉 재조사 내용 검토 결과, 대왕릉은 야트막한 구릉 능선 정상부의 입지, 지상에 거대한 규모의 봉분 조성에 판축기법의 토목공법 적용 등 사비기 부여 능산리고분군의 왕릉과는 다른 양상과 함께 석실구축에 중국 남조척(南朝尺)의 사용 가능성도 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 21m에 달하는 장엄한 묘도와 살아생전미리 무덤을 만드는 수릉(壽陵) 가능성도 제시하였다.
이번 대왕릉의 재조사로 확인된 새로운 자료가 백제 사비기 왕릉 구조 및 횡혈식석실에 대한 기존 인식을 벗어나 이해의 폭을 넓히는데 도움이 되었으면 한다.

영어초록

During the age of Japanese oppressive occupation, the Japanese colonial government destroyed many relics scattered all over the country for the purpose of justifying the colonial rule. After a century has passed since then, many of the relics surveyed at that time were newly investigated by the hands of the Korean scholars who have found and revealed new facts including particularly those of the Twin Royal Tombs in Iksan.
The Twin Royal Tombs are located at the lower hills around the west-end ridge of Mt. Ohgeumsan (180m above sea level), with two round-shaped tombs (the great tomb and the small tomb) 180 m apart in parallel from each other in the south-north direction. During the re-examination of the great tomb in 2017, the remains of one individual were gathered from the inside of the wooden box which had been placed on the shelf after the survey during the Japanese colonial period, together with new data showing the structure of the royal tombs during the Sabi period of Baekje Kingdom. The scientific analysis of the ashes from the remains confirmed that it was an older man's. The result of the dating was also announced suggesting that the man is likely to be King Mu, the thirtieth king of Baekje Kingdom.
The present paper spotlighted again the nature of the Twin Royal Tombs in Iksan by reviewing the literature and documents related to the Twin Royal Tombs, including the data, materials and information obtained from the excavation during the Japanese colonial age as well as from the excavation research of the great tomb conducted recently. From the review of the literature and materials, it was made known that, in the past, the twin tombs were believed to be the ones for 'the founder of Mahan' or 'the King Mu of Baekje Kingdom'. But just after the survey in 1917 during the Japanese colonial rule, it was recognized as the tombs of the royal family members during the Sabi period of Baekje.
The reexamination of the great tomb in 2017 showed that it is located around the top of the low ridge line and Banzhu (版築) technique was applied to construct the mound of grand scale over the graves on the plain area, which is different from the style of the royal tombs found in the old tombs cluster in Neungsan-ri of Sabi period, implying the possibility that the scales of the China's Southern Dynasty were employed when constructing the stone chambers. In addition, the possibility was also raised that the majestic tomb road of about 21m long was constructed and the tomb for life (壽陵) was built before death.
I hope that the new data obtained from the re-examination of the great tomb could help to broaden the scope of our understanding beyond the existing perception of the structures of the royal tombs and tunnel stone chamber tombs during the Sabi period of Baekje Kingdom.
