목샤(Moksha: 해탈)에 이르기 위한 자이나교의 도덕률이 자이나 교인들의 도덕성 발달에 미치는 영향 (An Analysis of Ethical Principles of Jainism for Moksha(Liberation) and Moral Development of Jains Using Defining Issues Test)

초록

자이나교는 주전 6세기, 베다 종교가 사제 중심의 의식 종교로, 그리고사회가 바르나 시스템에 의해 계급화되었을 때 일어난 스라마나(sramana: 탁발수도)전통의 종교이다. 24대 띠르땅가라인 마하비라는 자이나교의 철학적 기초와 교리를 체계화했으며 출가자와 재가 출가자를 위한 공동체를조직했다. 자이나교 전통에 따르면 인간 영혼은 카르마의 영향으로 윤회가반복되기 때문에 엄격한 율법의 준수와 비폭력에 기반한 도덕적 완성을 통해 카르마를 끓고 구원에 이를 수 있다고 한다. 신에 의한 ‘타력 구원’ 보다는 개인의 금욕적 실천과 도덕적 완성이 현재와 미래의 삶에 영향을 끼친다고 믿는 ‘자력 구원’을 강조한다.
윤회를 야기하는 카르마를 끓고 해탈에 이르기 위해 마하비라는 출가자를 위한 다섯 가지 대율법과 재가 출가자를 위한 열 두 가지 소율법을 지키도록 했다. 인간 영혼이 금욕적 실천과 의지적 노력에 의해 끓임 없이 상승해 궁극적인 깨달음을 얻고 출생과 죽음을 반복하는 윤회의 사슬에서 벗어나 해탈에 도달한다고 믿음은 자이나 교인들이 독특한 윤리적 세계관을가지고 실천적 삶을 살도록 했다. 본 연구는 개인의 도덕적 완성을 통해 해탈에 이른다는 자이나교의 윤리적 기초를 살펴보고 실천적이고 실제적인도덕률에 대한 준수가 자이나 수행자들의 도덕성 발달에 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지를 DIT(Defining Issues Test) 조사를 통해 분석하고, 인도에 있는 타 종교(힌두교, 기독교)인들의 도덕 지수와 비교를 통해 자이나 교인들의 도덕성 발달의 특징을 살펴보았다.

영어초록

An individual’s moral capacity can be formulated by the interaction between what he/she believes in subject to moral discourses of religion, his or her own understanding and interpretation of religious scriptures, and the challenges for survival presented by the environment.
In India there is a unique religion which places an emphasis on morality as a crucial mean for ultimate goal of moksha(liberation).
Jainism arose in the sixth century BCE, when Brahmanical religion had become complex and ritual-centered, with priestly dominations and a society divided by the varna system. Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, established the philosophical foundation of Jainism and created religious order for ascetics and laypeople. He preached the principle of Jaina ethics and codes of conduct to be kept in the Jain community in order to follow the path of purification. He propagated the doctrine of liberation that it is attainable through one’s own efforts or moral excellence as the result of following the rules of discipline. Jaina soteriology has stimulated Jains’ moral development in terms of the way of Moksha.
The purpose of this study is to analyze whether and how the ethical principles and codes of conduct proposed by Mahavira mold a Jain’s moral capacity. The hypothesis of this research is that the Jaina way of life that emphasizes moral excellence in daily life through the codes of conduct proposed by Mahavira facilitates a Jain’s moral development and those who identify themselves as devoted Jains and pursue the Jaina ethical tradition with the sole objective of obtaining liberation through moral excellence display different levels of moral developmental indices on the DIT than Hindus and Christians do.
This research tries to substantiate how Jaina ethical principles and vows of conduct influence Jain’s moral development through Defining Issues Test and comparative research between Jains and other religious groups. The DIT provides various moral developmental indices: personal interest, maintaining norms, post-conventional, N2, utilizer, humanitarian liberalism, and religious orthodoxy scores. It is evident in this research that the ethical principles of religions and codes of conduct lead to difference in moral development.
