Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of knee pain in the general Korean population.
Methods: The subjects were participants aged ≥ 50 years from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a nationwide cross-sectional health survey conducted in 2010-2012. Knee pain was defined by the question: "Have you ever had knee joint pain last ing at least 30 days in the recent 3 months? Results: The prevalence of knee pain among the subjects was 20.7% (11.4% in men and 28.7% in women).
In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, knee pain was significantly associated with females (OR=1.43, 95% CI 1.19, 1.71) the elderly (≥70 years) (OR=1.31, 95% CI 1.06, 1.61), lower level of education (OR=2.26, 95% CI 1.58, 3.23), hip pain (OR=3.37, 95% CI 2.77, 4.09), back pain (OR=2.90, 95% CI 2.48, 3.39), knee radiographic osteoarthritis (OR=2.77, 95% CI 2.39, 3.21), obesity (OR=1.39, 95% CI 1.19, 1.61), stress (OR=1.44, 95% CI 1.22, 1.70), and depression (OR=1.35, 95% CI 1.12, 1.62).
These multiple factors explained 32.1% of variance in knee pain.
Conclusions: Knee pain is a common health problem in korean adults and it is a result of the interaction of multiple variables. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the multiple factors of patients suffering from knee pain.
