충무공 이순신가의 문중 교육과<나부가>류 가사 작품들 (Education of family of Chungmugong, Lee Sunshinand series Gasa works)

초록

지금까지 이충무공 후손가에서 문중 아녀자들의 교육을 위해 나부가류 가사 작품을 교육 매체로 활용했던 내력을 살펴보았다. 조선후기 덕수이씨 이충무공 후손가에서는 국가 존망의 위기에서 나라를 구한 충무공 이순신의 위업을 기리고 선양하려는 목적에서 이순신의 「행록」과 『충무공가승』, 그리고 『이충무공전서』 등을 편찬하였다. 이들 문헌은 한문으로 지어졌고 양반 남성들이 주요 독자층이었다.
이 과정에서 이충무공 후손들은 눈을 문중 내부로 돌려 문중 아녀자들에게도 충무공의 위업을 인식시키고 가르치는 방법도 모색하게 된다. 이를 위해 한문을 모르는 집안 아녀자들을 위해 한글로 『충무공행장』을 저술하여 보급하여 가문에 대한 자부심을 일깨웠다. 그리고 <나부가>와 <직즁녹>, 그리고 <난부가>와 같은 가사 작품을 활용하여 문중 아녀자들에게 바른 행실과 부덕을 가르쳤다. 한 마디로 충무공 행장류나 나부가류 가사는 가문의 존속과 유지를 위한 교육적 목적에서 작성되었다고 판단된다. 결과적으로 덕수이씨 이충무공가는 근대시기에 이르러 나라를 위해 목숨을 바친 애국자들이 족출하였다.
현재 전해지는 <나부가류>류 가사 작품은 모두 6편이다. 이 논문에서는 이들 <나부가>류 가사 작품의 작자나 필사자들이 모두 덕수이씨 이충무공의 후손들이었다는 점을 주목하였다. <직즁녹>의 작자인 이도희가 그렇고, <나부가>를 전사했던 이준영도 모두 이충무공의 후손이었다. 그리고 우리한글박물관에서 소장했던 『충무공행장』에 부기된 <난부가> 2편의 작자나 필사자도 이충무공의 후손일 것으로 추정하였다.
이들 이충무공 문중의 인사들이 나부가류 가사 작품을 창작한 의도는 문중 내의 아녀자들이나 자제들에 대한 교육 매체로 활용하려는 목적에서 지은 것으로 보았다. 충무공행장류는 자신들의 조상인 충무공 이순신에 대한 생애와 삶을 통해 문중내의 아녀자들에게 조상과 가문에 대한 자부심과 긍지를 심어주려는 의도에서 지어졌다. 그리고 <나부가>류 가사 작품은 그것에서 진일보하여 문중내의 여성들로 하여금 언행을 조심하고 부덕을 권려하려는 교훈서로 지어졌다는 점이다.
이들 작품들은 모두 덕수이씨 이충무공 후손가에서 지어졌고 문중 내부에서 전승되며 향유되었다. 지금까지 특정 가사 작품이 당색에 따라 전승된 사례는 있었지만, 이번처럼 <나부가>류 가사 작품이 특정 문중을 중심으로 전승된 사례가 보고된 경우는 거의 없었다.
여기에서 흥미로운 사실은 이충무공 후손가에서 집안 아녀자들과 자손들의 교육을 위해 이들 나부가류 가사 작품들을 활용하였지만 작품마다 서술상의 차이를 보인다는 점이다. <난부가(懶夫歌)>는 과거 준비에, <난부가(懶婦歌)>는 여성의 소임에, <직즁녹>은 부인의 효행에, <나부가>는 부인의 나태함 경계에 각각의 서술 초점을 맞추고 있었기 때문이다.
한편, 이들 <나부가>류 가사 작품은 문학사적으로 서로 동일한 문예 양식을 공유하면서 작품 간의 내용을 답습에서부터 바꿔서 새로 쓰거나 개작하는 등과 같은 상호텍스트성이 활발하게 이뤄지고 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the history of using <Nanvuga> series Gasa works which are kind of didactic Gasa for education of descendants in the family of Chungmugong.
In the late Joseon Dynasty, descendants of family of Chungmugong in the Deoksu Lee clan published “Haengrok” and “Chungmugong Gaseung” of Lee Sunshin with the purpose of admiring great achievements of Chungmugong, Lee Sunshin who saved the country from the crisis of national existence. Based on this, “Chungmugong Jeonseo” was published through literature compilation work at the national level. These books were written in Chinese characters and thus noble men were main readers.
In this process, descendants of family of Chungmugong turned their eyes to the inside of the family and sought ways to teach great achievements of Chungmugong to women in the family. Thus, they published “Chungmugong Haengjang” in Hangul and distributed it for women who did not know Chinese characters in the family. They awaken self-confidence of their family through this book. In addition, the elderly of family of Chungmugong in the Deoksu Lee clan were not fully satisfied yet and needed to teach right deeds and female virtues for women in order to maintain the honor of the family. Thus, they created didactic Gasa such as <Navuga>, <Jikjyungnok> and <Nanbuga> and taught children and women who married men in the family. In short, didactic Gasa works such as “Chungmugong Haengjang” and “Navuga” series were written for the educational purpose.
Thus, as a result, the family of Chungmugong in the Deoksu Lee clan has produced many patriots who gave up their life for our country until the modern period. Many descendants of family of Lee, Jun Young (李峻永, 1879～1907) who transcribed and possessed <Navuga> and family of Lee, Do Hee who copied and distributed <Jikjungnok> gave up their life for the country. Many descendants of Chungmugong devoted themselves to the independence movement, because the family’s education that awakened and evoked self- confidence of descendants of Chungmugong, Lee Sunshin and patriotism might work greatly. In addition, it is thought that roles of women who married men in the family of Chungmugong might be bigger than anything else.
We need to pay attention to the fact that Chungmugong Haengjang series and Nabuga series Gasa works were created and transcribed by descendants of the family of Chungmugong in the Deoksu Lee clan. Lee, Do Hee who created <Jikjyungnok> and Lee, Jun Young who transcribed <Nabuga> were also descendants of Chungmugong. In addition, it is thought that the author or transcriber for two works of <Nabuga> added in “Chungmugong Haengjang” owned by the National Hangeul Museum may be descendants of Chungmugong.
Thus, it is necessary to look into the intent of descendants of the family of Chungmugong in the Deoksu Lee clan who created these Nabuga Gasa works. It is thought that the reason why they created Nabuga series Gasa works is to use them as educational materials for women and children in the clan. In Chungmugong Haengjang series, a life of Chungmugong who was their ancestor was described in order to encourage women in the clan to have the pride and self-confidence about the ancestor and the family. Moreover, the contents of Nabuga series Gasa works took a major step forward. These works were created to encourage women in the clan to watch what they do and say and cultivate womanly virtues.
In addition, Nabuga series Gasa works are divided into <Nabuga>, <Ji- kjyungnok>, <Nanbuga(懶夫歌)> and <Nanbuga(懶婦歌)> on the basis of contents. <Nabuga> and <Jikjyungnok> contain the contents to watch indolent behaviors of women and become wise women with womanly virtues and norms. On the other hand, <Nanbuga(懶夫歌)> and <Nanbuga(懶婦歌)> contain the contents in which people regret bitterly when they become adults because they did not study hard or they did not cultivate womanly virtues when they were young.
Here is an interesting point. Descendants of Chungmugong used Nabuga series Gasa works for education of women and children, but there are some differences in the description in each work. <Nanbuga(懶夫歌)> was focused on the preparation of state examination. <Nanbuga(懶婦歌)> was focused on duties of women. <Jikjyungnok> and <Nabuga> were focused on filial behavior of wives and warning on laziness of wives, respectively.
