물명(物名)류의 특징과 자료적 가치 (Characteristics of Classes of Mul-myeong and the Material Value Thereof)

초록

본고에서는 물명 자료의 현황을 살펴보고, 이들이 등장하게 된 시대적 배경과 특징, 국어 어휘사에서 차지하는 위상, 학제 간 연구와 활용에 대하여 살펴보았다.
‘물명(物名)’류의 편찬은 지나간 시기에 무분별하게 받아들였던 중국의 물명을 고증하여 바로잡고 한자․한문을 이해하는 데 도움을 주고자 시작되었으며, 거의 필사본으로만 전할 뿐 판본은 전하지 않는다. 알려진 저자는 대부분 실학자들이며 이들의 필사연대는 주로 18세기 중반부터 20세기 초까지 분포한다. 어휘를 의미부류에 따라 분류하여 수록하고 있고 표제어는 모두 한자어이며, 주석은 한문과 한글로 하여 놓았다.
물명 자료의 가치는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국어사적 가치로서 동일 표제항에 대한 시대별 표기 변화를 통해 음운론적 변화를 고찰할 수 있으며, 새김의 변화를 통해 의미 변화 단계를 알 수 있다. 일부의 경우는 방언사적 측면에서도 귀중한 자료로서 역할을 담당한다. 또한 당시에 민간에서 사용되던 어휘 자료들을 제공받을 수 있다. 둘째, 국어학사적 가치로서 기존의 국어학사에서 다루지 못했던 자료들을 통해 국어학사의 흐름을 파악하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 셋째, 문자학적 가치로서 판본에서 얻지 못하는 각종 필사 자료를 통한 한자 자형의 이체자(異體字), 이형자(異形字) 연구에 도움을 줄 수 있다. 넷째, 문화사적 가치로서 표제항으로 나타나는 각종 어휘들을 시대별로 살펴보면 문화사적 측면에서 접근이 가능하다.

영어초록

This paper looked into the status of Mul-myeong materials, the background and characteristics of the times for their appearance, their status comprising in the history of Korean vocabulary, and the interdisciplinary research on and utilization of them.
Compilation of classes of ‘Mul-myeong’ was initiated in a bid to correct them through historical research into Chinese Mul-myeong, which was indiscriminately accepted in by-gone days, and to provide help to the understanding of Chinese characters and sentences; however, the compiled Mul-myeong is handed down mostly only in manuscripts without any introduction of editions. The known authors of the manuscripts are mostly Silhak scholars, and the period of their transcription is distributed mostly from the mid-18th century until the early 20th century. They included vocabulary through categorization according to the meaning class, and title words are all Sino-Korean words with annotations in Chinese sentences and Hangeul.




The value of Mul-myeong materials is as follows： First, as the value of the Korean language history, Mul-myeong materials make it possible for us to consider phonological changes through chronological orthographic changes of the same entry, and to learn the semantic change phase through changes in carving.
In some cases, Mul-myeong materials play a role as precious ones from the aspect of the Korean dialect history as well. Also, it’s possible to be provided with vocabulary materials which were used among the then ordinary people.




Second, as the value of the Korean linguistics history, Mul-myeong materials could provide help to the understanding of the current of the Korean linguistics history through the materials which failed to be handled in the existing Korean linguistics history.




Third, as the worth in terms of graphonomy. Mul-myeong materials could provide help to the research on the variant form & shape of Chinese characters through various transcriptive materials that are not available in editions.




Fourth, as the worth in terms of the cultural history, Mul-myeong materials make it possible for us to make access from the aspect of the cultural history by looking into various vocabulary appearing as entries by period.
