자전류의 역사와 한문 학습 자전의 필요성 (The History of Jajeunryu(字典類) and the Necessity of the Chinese Character Study Dictionary)

초록

한자 문화권에서는 언어사전을 흔히 字典이라 불러 왔다. 이것은 현대의 辭典에 해당하는 것인데, 편찬의 목적과 방식에 따라 字典을 韻書, 類書, 字書의 셋으로 나눈다. 우리나라에서 간행된 운서들은 대부분 『三韻通考』의 방식을 취하고 있는데, 이는 당시의 어문 생활에서 필수적인 시부를 지을 때에 同韻字의 검색을 용이하도록 고안된 것이다. 또한 실학 시대에 편찬된 物名類의 類書들은 당시 중국에서 새롭게 만들어진 한자 어휘들을 우리 고유의 방식으로 고증하고, 이를 새로운 한자 어휘 수용하는 과정에서 산출된 결과물이다. 그리고 우리나라에서 한자 자전으로서의 체제를 온전히 갖추고 있는 자전은 정조 때에 간행된 『全韻玉篇』으로, 이 책에서 규범화된 한국 한자음은 현대 한자 자전의 한국 한자음에 대한 기본 틀이 되었다. 2008년 단국대학교 동양학연구소에서 간행한 『漢韓大辭典』은 한자문화권에서 간행된 각종의 韻書, 類書, 字書 등에 수록된 문자와 어휘를 집성하였다.
조선시대에는 한글이 창제된 것을 계기로 ‘語文一致’의 필요성이 절실했음에도 불구하고 - 세종이 한글을 창제한 것을 계기로 ‘語文一致’의 여건이 조성되었지만, 여전히 한글이 문자 생활의 중심이 되지는 못하였다. 이와 같은 한문중심의 어문 생활에서 한자의 音과 義에 대한 지식, 나아가서 한문 속의 한자어 등의 주석적 지식은 필수적이었다. 최세진이 1522년에 편찬한 『訓蒙字會』는 한문중심의 언어생활에서 아동들이 한자교습서로 사용하던 『千字文』과 『類合』의 문제점을 보완한 한자 학습용 사전이다. 이 책에 제시된 표제자들이 대부분 ‘한문 교육용 기초 한자 1,800자’에 포함되어 있지 않은 僻字로 구성되어 있다. 이는 최세진이 살던 시대와 현재 우리가 살고 있는 시대가 언어적 환경이 서로 다른 것에서 비롯된 것이다. 최세진이 어린아이들의 한자 교육을 위해 편찬한 『훈몽자회』는 한문중심의 언어생활에서 책에서 학습한 문자와 실제 눈으로 본 사물을 하나로 일치시키는 ‘字與物一’의 교육목적을 달성하기 위해 창안된 것이다.
한문 학습 자전의 편찬은 기본적으로 한문 문장을 독해하는데 도움을 주기 위한 것이다. 그러나 한문 문장을 바르게 해석하기 위해서는 사전에 문장 속에서 구사된 한자 어휘의 의미를 명확하게 알고 있어야 한다. 한문 문장에는 한자 어휘는 經書나 史書 등 중국과 한국 고전 문헌에서 사용된 것과 함께 불경 번역어와 중국 근대어가 다수 포함되어 있다. 학교 현장에서 ‘2009 한문과 개정 교육과정’을 충실히 구현하기 이해서는 한문 문장에 깊이 자리하고 있는 불경 번역어와 근대 중국어에 대한 이해가 있어야 한다. 또한 근대 이후 서구 문화를 수용하는 과정에서 생성된 신문명 어휘들은 현재에도 일상의 언어생활에서는 물론 학교에서 사용하는 모든 교과서의 학술 용어로 사용되고 있다. 따라서 한문 학습 자전에 수록할 표제어를 선정할 때에는 위와 같이 한자 어휘의 중핵을 이루고 있는 불경 번역어, 중국 근대어, 신문명 어휘들에 대한 합리적인 처리 방안을 마련해야 한다.

영어초록

In the Chinese character culture sphere, the language dictionary has usually been called the Jajeun字典. It is divided by three kinds according to their editing purposes and methods as the Uoonseo韻書, Ruoseo類書, and Jaseo字書. Many of the Uoonseos in Korea were composed by the way of 『Samuoontogo三韻通考』 and conceived to make it easy for the users to look up words in them. Also, the Ruoseos of Moomyongruo物名類s were published in the period of Silhak實學, or the practice science and they were the outcomes in the process of investigating and accommodating the newly made Chinese words by peculiar way to Korea. 『Junuoonokpyon全韻玉篇』 is a lexicon published in the reign of King Jungjo正祖, completed the perfect system as a dictionary so that the Korean pronunciation of Chinese characters had been regulated by this book became the fundamental pronunciation form of today in Korea. 『Hanhandaisajun漢韓大辭典』 by Institute of Oriental Studies of Dankuk University in 2008 compiled all sorts of the characters and vocabularies in the Uoonseo, Ruoseo, and Jaseo in the Chinese character culture sphere.
In the Joseon Dynasty, despite the Korean alphabet invention and the desperate need of Umoonilchi語文一致, Hanguel, or the Korean alphabet couldn't be the center of the literal life. In the Chinese writing centered language society, it was indispensible to have the knowledge of the annotations as well as the pronunciations and meanings of the characters in the Chinese sentences. 『Hoonmongjahul訓蒙字會』, edited by Choi Se-jin in 1522, was a learner's dictionary for Chinese characters and it was complemented the problems of 『Chunjamoon千字文』 and 『Ryuhab類合』 which has been used as the children's Chinese study books in their Chinese character centered language lives. Most of the headletters(表題字) in this book are constituted by the an unusual letters and not included in the 18000 letters for the fundamental Chinese character education. The reason is because the language circumstances of Choi's period are different from ours. His 『Hoonmongjahul』, the Chinese character dictionary for children was originated to achieve the educational purpose for Jayumoolil字與物一, which means the conc urrence of characters in books and things in actual life.
The publication of learner's dictionaries for Chinese characters is basically to help comprehend Chinese sentences. However, in order to understand them correctly, one should grasp the meaning of the Chinese vocabularies of the sentences in the dictionary. The Chinese vocabularies of the sentences include many words of the classics and history books in Chinese and Korean classic literature, translation words for the Buddhist scriptures, and modern Chinese. To complete the revised curriculum for Sino-Korean subject in 2009, it is very important to understand the Chinese translation words for the Buddhist scriptures and modern Chinese placed deeply in the Chinese sentences. Futhermore, new cultural vocabularies made in the process of introducing western civilization after modern ages have been using as the technical terms in all school textbooks as well as in the actual language life. Therefore, choosing headwords(表題語) for the Chinese character study dictionary, it is essential to provide the reasonable solution plans about the Chinese translation words for Buddhist scriptures, modern Chinese, and new civilization vocabularies because they construct the core of the Chinese characters as above-mentioned.
